I hated Squid Game. As for Korean stuff in general, I can't be doing with the bloody melancholy.
Got bored of several same plot story in recent years. Shame though because i really enjoyed Korean dramas and films previously so now i choose to watch those supernatural or myth dramas, films.

Abit out of the norm if anyone interested in Feng Shui, fortunes and the likes. Recommend Face Reader starring Song Kang Ho (Parasite Actor) & Lee Jung Jae (Squid Game Actor). Also the 2 sequences that follows.

KC production values are top notch, to be fair.

May I ask exactly which time period? The article mentions a couple not spaced too far apart (mid 90s and 00s).

There was also a rise in ultraviolent projects all across Asia (Man From Nowhere, I Saw the Devil, The Raid, etc) that was a direct result of torture porn's (Saw, Hostel etc) successes in that region (and which were responses to the broader cultural response to the 9/11 attacks). Long story short, those territories had very strict censorship regulations, which were successfully lobbied against in a large part in the wake of those projects and the spread of 'globalism' and free-flowing capital.

I remember you posting about Scarface a while ago and how you've 'soured' a bit on gratuitous violence.

For anyone that enjoys historical dramas, two of the best of all time are
Deep Rooted Tree and Six Flying Dragons. Both are filled with awesome intrigue and strategy battles. It's like watching human chess unforld.

Historical dramas for me will be Jumong and Queen Seonduk. 2000s dramas though. Lets not forget Jewel in the Palace. Nostalgic :D. Enjoy deep rooted trees too. Didn't get to watch flying dragons. Will keep in mind if i am going to binge watch dramas/films.

If you like intrigue shows, that is truly one of the best I've seen. IMO it could even be better than Nirvana in Fire I due to the ups and downs of the various characters. If you enjoyed Deep Rooted, you'll love Flying Dragons!

There is a series that flew under the radar on netflix called DP. Supposed to be brilliant.

Just finished watching 50 episodes in 10 days!

I love it.
Though I generally don't like typical drama; right time right place, I reeeaally like this one.

As a Korean-American I grew up watching a lot of film/tv and have seen the improvements over time, but still cant pinpoint what it is. I think most international film and tv have improved in quality while the US/Hollywood have stagnated and gotten shittier and repetitive. It feels like 80% of what gets released these days are sequels and remakes.
It’s partly to do with how Korean shows rarely get a second season, so the writers and director actually have a proper ending in mind and don’t leave stuff hanging for the next season.
US tv dramas are full of this shit where they hint about so many things but practically none of it gets answered before they got canned.

Awesome! So glad someone else enjoyed it. I was just telling a co-worker about that show today!

After watching Deep Rooted Tree, I jumped to 17th century Joseon, watching The Slave Hunters, then Dong Yi (have watched it 10 years ago).

Six Flying Dragons 8.5/10
Deep Rooted Tree 8/10
The Slave Hunters 8/10
Dong Yi 7.5/10

The Slave Hunters (24 episodes), the scenery (cinematic?) looks different from the other three, feels more natural.

Dong Yi (60 episodes) is good but feels too long, I got bored and sometimes skip.

Just checked IMDB ratings:
Six Flying Dragons 8.9/10
Deep Rooted Tree 8.2/10
The Slave Hunters 8.7/10
Dong Yi 8.1/10

Thanks for the reviews! I haven't seen Slave Hunters or Dong Yi so I'm putting but those on my watch list. 24 episodes for Slave Hunters seem like a quick watch so I'm excited to dig into these
