Kylian Mbappé | Real Madrid watch

If his talent could match his ego he'd be some player. Even in that world Cup final where he scored a hat trick I don't think he was that impressive, two penalties and a hit and hope, had a shite first half.

I’ve always been a bit miffed by that lore surrounding that performance. He got a hat-trick sure, but as you said, two penalty kicks, and the reality is he was anonymous for 80 minutes of the game. His equalising goal really was sensational but overall I don’t think it’s the spellbinding performance it’s talked up to be.

I do think he’s incredible and at his very top level he is the best player around, but he’s definitely not a likeable player and there’s no question his ego is a real issue for his clubs. I think there’s already enough evidence to support that.

Just come on to whistles and boos against Oviedo.

EDIT: Whistles from the Bernabeau every time he touches the ball. Wow
That club is a joke.

They chant his name when Hazard is unveiled because they demand his signing.

When he decides to stay at PSG, they freak out and mock him as if they were entitled to have whoever they want.

When he arrives, they pull a 180 and love him again.

Two years later, with the president losing his marbles and his teammates knocking each other out, they blame him.

They're the most disloyal and entitled fans in sport. It's baffling any player would want to play there when Barcelona offers a better team culture and the same climate.

I remember they booed Cristiano Ronaldo multiple times over the years. So entitled. When you look at trophies sure Real Madrid are biggest club in the world but it's like there's no bond and club culture, all feels superficial. Casemiro won everything at Real Madrid and reached his peak there but you realise from his interviews that he did not have the connection with the fans that he has at United. It's why he's been emotional about United even though he only won 2 domestic cups and finished 8th and 15th in consecutive seasons.

Grateful to them for beating Liverpool and City several times when it mattered though.

Somewhat agreed. Impressive in very brief moments but disappeared for the rest of the 85 minutes of normal time

I mean, I appreciate the effort but this is a terrible, terrible take.
Do you watch a full game or just highlights? He didn't have a great game. I'll maintain that. Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought that either in this thread.

Go back and watch it, or even search the world cup final thread here and I bet you most said the same at the time. He scored an unbelievable goal and two penalties. The way people go on about scoring a hat trick in a World Cup final like he had a generational performance is nonsense.

Barcelona also recently hasn't been very known to treating their players fairly when they hit hard (financial) times..

It's not disloyalty or entitlement. It's the same as fans of any club. You want to see the players put a shift in, work hard and bleed sweat and tears for the shirt. Not just walk around on the pitch. Mbappe is worse than Vini for that

He's Lingard if Lingard was 5 times more talented.

Weird comparison, Lingard was irritating as feck but never came out against the manager and his work rate was very good. His main problem was inconsistency and lack of quality. Mbappe is consistent and world class but his work rate is pretty poor. He's the exact opposite of Lingard on the field.

I was actually surprised by how much he cares and connects to this club. Usually a player who spent most of their career at a big club struggles to fully connect to a new big club at the end of their career. He seems to love United.

"We started the season well. Then we lost everything in the second half of the season," Mbappé said. "It hurts a lot. I feel like we had a playing style, a structure, and we lost it.

"I have a great relationship with Xabi. Everyone knows what I think of him. But we have to look ahead at what we can improve and do better.

"There's no problem with Arbeloa. Everyone has their own ideas and philosophy. I have to work to be better than Gonzalo, Mastantuono and Vini to get playing time."

The pro-Xabi side has been throwing a lot of punches lately.

Come to think of it now he was laughing in a very sarcastic fashion to someone on the bench after Gonzalo scored. Thought it strange at the time but in the context of his post-match comments it isn’t a good look at all. He must be an absolute nightmare to deal with as a teammate.

Sorry but this is a take that doesn’t seem to want to acknowledge the culture of the club you’re talking about.

You have to be di Stefano, Puskas, C.Ronaldo, Ronaldo level for Real Madrid to think you’re something special, and relative to them, you’re not going to be and that’s the standard and pedigree on the door before any player walks into that environment. Madrid respect players who put their ego to the side and work tirelessly for the badge, just like any other club does. Modric wasn’t rated much at all initially and then became a hero, not only because of his ability, but his graft and understanding of wearing the badge. Real Madrid love triers a lot more than primadonnas and they are one of few clubs in history who will look at the latter with not only disdain, but considered gall because it’s seen as disrespecting what the club stands for.

You’re not a bigger name than what has preceded you; you’re not a better player; you’ve done nothing relative to the annuls of this club; what planet are you on to think you can come here and act like that? Madrid regularly put players with ridiculous egos in their place in a way that is the envy of most of the footballing world - nobody is allowed to go there and either think they’re bigger than the club or that they can undercook effort in any way. It makes for cold, transactional rapport until players prove themselves, but any player going there should know that is the score otherwise give them a wide berth.

Mbappe has made things icey for himself at two clubs now due to the same thing; you can bet if he were prepared to give his all for the team he’d be treated very differently to how he is. At other clubs, he’d be adored by some because of his output irrespective of the the scorched earth his game causes others to endure and that’s how you create entitlement.

I’ve never championed Madrid in my life before this post, but there really needs to be some perspective concerning Mbappe and why he’s an island despite being one of the best players on earth.

Well not at all is an overstatement as you can easily look at these statements uncharitably, but overall listening to the full uninterrupted thing it's hard to understand why we're supposed to be outraged. The worst part is when it sounds like he's saying they lost their structure during the second half of the season which could be construed as a dig at Arbeloa, but he's answering to what went wrong with Alonso leaving (losing the structure they had been working towards to up to this point). Feels like a whole lot of noise for barely anything of note, as often with Madrid and/or Mbappé.

That never happened.

That's the underlying issue.

There has been skepticism toward Mbappe from the RM fanbase ever since the failed move in 2022.

To be fair, the comment about being '4th choice striker' is bizarre.

It's so weird that I don't know what to think about it at all. Cannot understand if he's saying he was fourth choice for this game (starting on the bench), which is perfectly fine, or saying he got told he's fourth choice at the club, which is absolutely insane (but at the same time why would he say he needs to work harder to be in front of Vinicius or Garcia). Bizarre is the right word for it.

And for good reason. Ambitious and reasonable players like Mbappé will not appreciate if a small part of their teammates sabotage a promising project out of an egotistical and entitled agenda (and neither should the fans). Sacking Alonso was a massive blunder.

I think you’re being overly kind towards Mbappe for interpreting it this way. What they lost when Alonso got sacked and Arbeloa came in aren’t two seperate things. It seems like a fairly clear dig at Arbeloa, not a love song for Alonso. The context is fairly clear when you factor in his nonsense about being told he’s fourth choice and that he just has to work harder for the manager to select him.

PSG living their best lives drama free and now Mbappe has brought more chaos to this Madrid locker room than we've witnessed in ages.

Appreciate the perspective.

What's the likely outcome to this? Mourinho comes in and Mbappe gets a fresh start or a loan move to the prem (which seems the only other option?)

Saying he needs to work harder to be ahead of Mastantuono is a wonderful troll (I am assuming the quote is real).

Fresh start, absolutely. No way they dispense with him.

I'm team Mbappé. Of course he might also have done some things wrong but from what I've seen the story basically goes:

1. Xabi Alonsos team spearheaded by the brilliant Mbappé were on their way to secure La Liga and go deep in all other tournaments.

2. Some players managed to get Alonso kicked out/to resign.

3. Madrids season goes to shit.

4. Mbappé gets all the blame, reputation tarnished.

5. Mbappé finally has enough and speaks up.

In my view I think Florentino Perez never liked Alonso for some reason but I do also think he in private agrees fully with Mbappé. Issue is some of the rebels are highly valued players on the pitch and also not least commercially. Bellingham can be the face of the club for 10+ years. So even if Mbappé is right the president needs to protect the club.

No mention of Vini or Mbappe. Hmm....

Taking credit for Cristiano, i see, that signing was actually done under the previous president, Calderon.

Part of the reason they never got on very well, it wasn't "his" signing.

Easily done when you found the European cup, get a free pass into the competition every year and are in a two horse race for the league title every year.
Their superiority is artificial and they've been held up by despots and kings.
