Lamine Yamal

There should be a balance, I never watched Messi once and thought he was being selfish, he would always pass the ball if it was the best option, still scored more than most.
Yeah, I think Messi's a true anomaly in that sense - the greatest playmaker - always setting others up, sharing penalties with teammates, choosing the best option even if it means he's not scoring - combined with ruthless goalscoring efficiency - his pure goalscoring numbers up there with the greatest as well.

Usually, you get one or the other (probably a couple of other exceptions aside, but I doubt with Messi's ultimate numbers). I hope Yamal develops and continues working hard, making the right decisions on and off the pitch - he's at least mentioned working hard there as a prerequisite. To get those levels of greatness, a certain level of cockiness and belief in oneself is definitely needed/warranted.

Not necessarily the right way to go about it though, if every of his team mate have the big-shot attitude, the team would be winning nothing.
I really don't think he said anything wrong plus I love cocky players who can back it up, some of the best in most sports have been cocky through out the years from Ali, Mayweather, Jordan, Ibrahimovic, Iverson etc. People a lot of the times mistaken confident for cockiness.

The boy is 17, living in a totally different age of time than a 17 year old Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar, he is also reaching heights they did not reach at such age.

His " off the pitch" situations is just your typical " young immature stuff" , also if you don't think Ronaldo was super cocky at 17 you are sadly mistaken , same goes for Neymar.
He is 18. His start to the season for Barcelona this season has been significantly inferior to Messi's 2005/6 at the same age atleast in general play although not interms of stats.

As far as Cristiano was concerned, he too was overconfident but really had not much to show for it unlike Yamal. Don’t know much about Neymar.

He's 18. When he has a stronger body of work he can say anything, now he's just attracting the wrong attention. Most though Mbappe would have a ballon d'or by now when he was 18. He hasn't done badly but is yet to win the UCL and ballon D'or.
A lot of people on this forum see Neymar career as a fail overall not because he wasn't really good but because of the hype. He was supposed to be The one after Messi-Ronaldo. He never won the ballon d'or and his only ucl was in a team with Messi as the star. I'll be keeping my mouth shut if I was Yamal, the media are going to say all manner he doesn't need to add even more to it.

He has played 3 games so far! Let the grass grow a bit before we talk about someone's season being inferior.

Is it fair to say he was top 10 player in the world last season at 17? He has every right to talk up his ability, he even said he wanted to win more things with Barcelona and the national team.

His maturity is at the expected level, he is bound to do silly stuff, people often forget about Rooneys scandal/ activities at 18,I suggest some of you to take a trip down memory lane.

I said "start to the season". I know early days but he has struggled so far for Barcelona.

I dont see how you can say Messi first 3 games of the 05/06 season is better than a guy who has 2 goals and 3 assist, you said not in terms of stats but you can't just dismiss 2goals and 3 assists in 3 league games.
Struggled how exactly?

I'm not even sure how you can revert back 20 years and say Messi was better in his first 3 games, those were the days he used to wear nike boots , that's how long ago it was,

We can't even have a "General play" discussion when only 3 games have taken place,

Have you watched Barcelona this season? He has lost the ball so many times in each game while trying to beat his marker. You can compare him to last season's Yamal and his start has been way below that too.

Having said that, I agree its very early days in the season so let's watch. I have high expectations of him.

No lies told by Rooney,Lamine is better than all 3 at this stage of his career.

I will say young players back then are more " raw" than young players now, coaching these days seem to find tune the fundamentals better.

Game’s gone, etc.

Lamine Yamal has stopped signing his autograph on shirts for fans because he is considering selling his autograph. The Spanish teenager is close to an agreement with a company specialising in the sale of clothing and merchandise related to sports stars.

Wonder if Barcelona need to get a different kind of jersey for him, with a bigger neckline, to fit his big head through.

Immensely talented but shocking attitude and workrate. Fame already got to him. Throwing arms in the air all game today, pouting, invisible first half. Already seems more interested in of field activities than playing football. Maybe he is Barcelona's own version of Rashford.

Coming after the dwarves and the influencer 20 years older than him...

I thought that too but didn't want to post anything, he's an immense talent, but talent alone isn't enough. The comparisons to Messi are ridiculous and always have been.

His immense talent is undeniable but looks like the hype has gotten to his head; he simply won't defend despite being just 18 and hasn't earned that right yet. He also speaks too much.

He's an incredible player and certainly one of the best itw at the moment but you can see with the way he and his family acted after the Balon Dor awards that he full on is of the opinion that he's the best in the world and therefore he now doesn't have to put in the work, thinks he can just turn up and everything will go his way.
He's going to be in for a rude awakening if he doesn't humble himself as he's becoming exceedingly vain and petulant. One thing you could never fault Ronaldo and Messi at their best was the work they put in to be the best in the world and Yamal already appears to not have that same drive he'll end up being ruined by his mid twenties if he continues like he's been moving recently.

Isn’t it a bit worrying he’s already amassed 114 senior appearances for Barca and he’s only 18.

Surely there should be a cap on how many games ‘youth’ players can play for the sake of their body / development?

At the rate he’s going, I don’t think he’ll hit his potential - be it either through injuries and not being allowed to rest and recover / or through ego and outside influences distracting him

Yeah fair point.

Also, any concerns about his attitude have to be pushed onto his handlers. If his head’s getting too big, his parents / agent etc need to be held to account as he’s only a kid and deserves more protection than he’s been given.

Yep it's insane. At his age he's amassed more minutes than Rooney and Ronaldo combined

I've posted it here before, but Barca also have a horrible, horrible record of not developing their youngsters/young talents to be fit and available in the past decade or so.

Gavi
Pedri
Bernal
Araujo
Dembele
Fati
That fullback whose name escapes me.

Have all been injury prone wrecks since coming through the Barca ranks as a young player.

Pedri played 70 games as an 17-18 year old in a season. Shock horror, the guy is now consistently injured.

Yeah, I think he's at risk of being burned out and/or end up injured and they're very dependent on him. Don't know what they can do to lessen the burden specially with their finances.

Yeah, he’ll be like Rooney, hitting his peak before 25 and done by 30.

Reading these posts is just hilarious. He's just coming back off an injury. How do you know how hard he works? Answer, you don't.

All these posts are telling me (after a loss in the Clasico, when Barca beat Madrid four straight times in that fixture last season, something that had not happened before that since the mid-80s) is that people are desperate for him to fail. But he won't.

Yamal will be fine, he's undeniably talented and more effective than Messi was at his age, playing in La Liga where he's somewhat protected from deliberate hard tackles due to his importance in the Spanish NT. Barca & Spain are indeed overplaying an 18yo with crazy minutes on his CV which is why I can forgive the fact he doesn't defend or track back as much as he should. Yamal has to look out for himself and not go 150% every game in the interest of self-preservation and avoid injury.

Some are complaining that he's lazy versus Madrid yet claim he won't have a long career due to injury. Well, he's arguably trying his best to not overwork his body.

Barca need to keep him grounded I agree, but I can definitely see him leaving in the far future for a bigger paycheck than Barca can afford. He's not a new Messi, personality wise he's definitely more of a Neymar, the player he looks up to. He has to keep himself grounded enough to avoid Neymar's career trajectory.

He's a generational talent no doubt but he's as dislikeable as it gets. Brat with a big mouth and attitude. He talked too much on that UCL semifinal against inter, that final against Portugal and now before the clasico. It hasn't gone well for him.

I don't really like Madrid nor Barcelona but I was definitely cheering for Madrid today only for the joy of seeing him lose.

His dad is a poor influence for what we can see from the media and the level of exposure and being the face of Barcelona and Spain is definitely not doing him any favours for his ego.

Also Pique inviting him to that interview with Ibai, it's like the whole environment want him to make a dick out of him. Sadly I don't think there's a personality in Barca that he listens to, it seems he's bought the hype and there's no one who's willing to face him.

Loved seeing him get humbled. Almost as satisfying as the Nuno Mendes game. Talks way too much.

And Mbappe has always been better.

You don't get humbled in a league match in October, even if it is the Clasico. And Mendes, from the evidence of their most recent encounter, is finding it more and more difficult to deal with him one on one, and he's literally the only guy that could.

Gonna be fun watching him shine whilst you burn with hate from the sidelines.....

Bigger paycheck? Welcome to EPL. Bigger than Barcelona, there is only real Madrid. I don't think Yamal will do a Figo 2.0.

Nuno Mendes? Lamine beat him twice in 90 minutes? Nuno nearly erased him from the game. That did not suggest "he's gonna find it harder in the future" at all. He will, because Lamine will get better, but how soon that will be...who knows

Yeah, he’ll be like Rooney, hitting his peak before 25 and done by 30.

Thats because he was an alcoholic (has said so himself) and had a “bad” bodytype for an athelete. If Rooney looked after himself better he would still be playing now.

He looks physically stronger than most players his age. Neymar is probably his equivalent in terms of early age exposure and only bad tackles derailed his career. Oh and being seemingly unprofessional off the pitch.

Fair enough.

PSG, Man City, insert-new-money-club yet to be acquired by Arab sheikhs.... He has time on his side. Don't see him staying at one club his whole career, even Messi couldn't do it due to Barca mismanagement.

I thought psg policy is not to sign superstars anymore. Not sure about the future. Newcastle was acquired by the Arab but they are being limited by the FFP/PSR rules and cant go all out in signing.

He was lucky to not get sent off.
