Outstanding player. Really good at changing tempo too when our other defenders are farting around, he'll inject a bit of oomph. The "Iceman" Lindelof should be embarrassed watching his composure tonight. Has there been a more ironic nickname in Manchester since Curly Watts.

You know Martinez is the same height as Roy Keane is right ? There’s a massive difference in being a 5ft 10 midfielder and a 5ft 10 centre back and he is no slower than Casemiro or Ugarte whilst being better on the ball and is most certainly not weak, yes the fitness concerns are definitely there for sure though.
The list of attributes was to detail how ill suited he was to being a CB, which you can get away with in some leagues not at United.

That aside, I don’t see anything to suggest he could be a good midfielder. It’s not just pace, it’s a complete lack of athleticism. Doesn’t matter how tall he is as a midfielder, but he’s not one, or if being kind a failed midfielder. He’s far from the right player in any position for a PL club, and his deficiencies are exacerbated in this system.

Look at what Yoro brings, what Heaven brought, even De Ligt has shown he’s capable of bursting forward. Maz, Heaven and Yoro have all shown that they are far better suited to the LCB role than he is. He’s a really weak link when he plays.

I think it’s perfectly apt. He melts and cracks under pressure.

Some pundits thought we should've sign Jarrad Branthwaite over Yoro. Everton demanded a similar transfer fee at the time.

There are moments in the game where he just ups and decides he’s probably one of the best players on the pitch so he’ll play like it

I can’t wait till he’s actually settled and plays like he believes he’s our best defender.

I’m crediting him with two assists btw. I didn’t miss that carry and dummy for Rasmus goal

Really love his ability to bring the ball forward and help create goals. Great match for him today.

Everton demanded a bigger fee for Branthwaite. It was widely reported that they demanded £70M, which is close to what we offered for Harry Maguire, while we offered at best half of that with add ons.

I think we signed both Yoro AND MDL for just a bit more than what Everton demanded for one player, which says it all really. If there's one thing INEOS has done right, it is to not cave to ridiculous demands like did in previous seasons.

I don’t even care if he can defend at this point, what he adds when going forward is invaluable.

The way he drives with the ball is such a treat to watch. We really need that ability from our CBs, changes the game so much. Brilliant defending too. I know Maguire has had some crazy moments, but this kid has been our best CB this year by far.

I love watching very good defenders, and he is looking like a gem. His one on one defending is already very good. He makes good decisions, drives the ball when needed, plays it to feet when needed. I can see how he's already upped his game on the ball as his confidence has grown.

There is something cool about tall, lanky CBs running deep into the opponent's half and being comfortable on the ball.

Its such a vital quality all over the pitch. When you can break through the lines it opens up so many options. Because we have had that so little this season, teams can defend in a certain way which is much more aggressive and seemingly risky because the risk is not there from us. This is why Amad is so vital as well. A player who breaks through the lines and has teams running back towards their own goal when they weren't expecting it. You can't be organised against that sort of thing. It catches teams off guard.

Easy to forget he is only 19 , he still has to develop and grow into his body and will get stronger and faster. If he continues on this progress we are seeing we will have a world class CB in the near future.

You just know with this lad, that teams have no idea what to do when you have a CB running at you with pace, ball control and is able to play one twos. I'm sure even with the pass to Diallo for Hojlunds goal, he still kept running to into the box. What do you even do against that?

If he's brave to be doing that at 19 in his first season, infront 74k fans, it can be sure we havent seen it all just yet.

Tiny tiny tiny bit of a shame his best performances have come on the LCB.

Maybe Amorim can try Heaven on the RCB when he is back for?

I’d like to see Martinez out of the club. He’s not good enough. I like his passion, but he’s weak, he’s short, he has no pace and has serious fitness issues. He would likely be awful in midfield. I see nothing on him to suggest he could do that role effectively. That’s why he ended up as CB.
Fully agreed. Terrible at defending wide areas and you need to do a lot of that in this system.

Yoro is showing a higher level than I have seen from Martinez in the LCB role.

He's probably already part of our best XI for next season right? Mazraoui - De Ligt - Yoro is a pretty decent back three, with Maguire, Heaven, Martinez, Shaw in back-up. At least that's one area of the pitch that doesn't need immediate attention.

We’ll probably go back in for Branthwaite again due to question marks over Shaw, Licha and Maguire’s long term futures and Lindelof leaving.

His touch and confidence in driving forward are great to watch. CB is a position of experience, so it'll be a few years before he masters the defensive side but he's well ahead of the curve for his age.

Best signing in years. Blowing Madrid's deal out of the water was worth every penny!

I think it depends on whether we qualify for Europe.

Of those ‘back-ups’ you have names, one is kid with just a few mins under his belt. Two are injury prone and can’t be relied upon and Maguire is out of contract next year, and whose likely replacement has also proved to be terribly injury prone. It’s not necessarily a priority, but another CB would be no bad thing.

We’ve got Heaven and Kukonki as left footed centre backs if we’re concerned about Shaw or Martinez fitness wise, Fredricson has shown promise and he is more than capable of at least taking Lindelof’s minutes next season so if we’re looking at a centre back it should be a young project signing like we thought Heaven would be before he showed enough already for first team football.
