Was hoping he'd return looking physically stronger. For want of a better word he was a bit "floppy" last season.

An extra stone of muscle would do him wonders, make him a proper athlete. But he looks pretty much the same as the day he arrived.

Obviously still plenty of time.

I've personally found him to not have the right partner.

Yoro & Martinez as partners both lack physicality. Same as Yoro and Heaven.

Maguire is our most important CB because he is the strongest defender we have that strikes a balance with Yoro, Heaven & Martinez lack of physicality.

What's frustrating for me is that Carrick has always kept Maguire on the right so Heaven and Martinez can play on the left but when Yoro & Maguire play together it's Maguire who plays on the left when imo it should be Yoro.

This is because Yoro's greatest ability is to make last ditch sliding/recovery tackles kind of like his lanky nature with his right foot. When he plays on the right hand side as he goes in to the tackle on his stronger foot he ends up leaving too much space in behind if he mistimed his recovery tackles.

When he plays on the left; his recovery tackles stop shots directly on goal & even if he mistimed it; it means the opposition have to go around him which is away from goal.

Honestly, whether I'm right or wrong, I think Yoro will be a better LCB than a RCB. If he doesn't get games at LCB then I personally don't see him making it here. His first season was at LCB and ever since he started playing RCB he has been way too easy to get past because of the type of defender he is.

He doesn't look confident to me and I think he realistically needs a loan back in France. A season away from the limelight, being the main man at the back, being the one commanding others rather than being commanded, being the one that progresses the ball rather than sideways passing it to someone else. He needs to learn to back himself, he has all the tools, but I just don't see him doing that as a sub here. Arsenal did it with Saliba I believe for two seasons and he came back a monster and that should be our pitch to him - go away, learn your trade for a year and come back and make that RCB spot yours.

Problem is De Ligt is made of biscuits, so it likely requires us to make another CB signing, which I'm not sure we have the budget for.

He was excelling in Ligue 1 at 18, he can learn nothing more there. He just needs time and trust in the PL, he will get there. Hopefully he realises he has all the tools this year and imposes himself.

Agreed. I'd love to see Carrick back him as a first choice centre half from the off, and see if he can hold onto the spot. He has the highest ceiling of all our centre halves in my opinion. As a poster above mentioned - he desperately needs to put on a bit of muscle first though.

Big season for him coming up. Young CBs should obviously be given time to develop, but I think everyone is at least a little dissapointed with how he's performed so far for United. You do see the flashes sometimes, he's athletic and quite advanced in his defensive technique. He really needs to get stronger and improve with his concentration, and he's still quite timid. For me, he's been dissapointing on the ball and aerially more than anything else. Far more raw in those respects than I thought he'd be. Right now, we don't really have to worry about Real swooping in for him.

The Saliba comparison is apt, I think a season or two more in France with less pressure would have done him well but two summers ago we obviously felt like we couldn't afford that.

Still, he is a baby in footballer and defender terms. Hope the club are patient and have a plan for him. He shouldn't be sitting on the bench all season, but we also need to win games. Still four years essentially left on his contract, so there is ample time to make a decision in that respect.

Eh? Saliba was in the French league till he was 21. Staying there till his early 20s before moving to a big club would have made far more sense for his development.

Ultimately, we spent huge money on an 18 year old CB who was not yet ready, and now we're trying to develop him whilst spending most of the games on the bench, in one of the most pressurised environments in football, in the toughest league - this is far from the ideal development path for a player.

But we spent far too much on him to loan him out now. It was a very inefficient use of resources at the time given the huge fee, signing him at 18 - he might be 3, 4, 5+ years into his contract before he hits his stride as a genuinely top CB, if he ever does become one, which is far from guaranteed.

I think Heaven is better but let's see. Yoro looks quite nervous when he plays.

One issue that's been apparent for many years is we must keep 2 regular CBs fit. Ridiculous our amount of injuries and if Yoro hits form, he has a chance to claim the position

Plenty of time for him to develop into a decent player, but if he wants to reach the top level, he should take the strides forward, not backwards or sideways. It can be touch for him in the league but hopefull he will kick on.

If he worked hard in the gym he would at least add strength, so he would be more confident going into tackles. He's not lindelof but abit reminds me the Sweded reluctant to defend. His aerial ability is a bit worrying too. Can he improve in that? Yes. Can he improve significantly in it? I am not sure.

His ability on the ball is okay for me, He's still better than the usual. Average passer though, but he can drive with the ball forward and showed glimpses of what he can do teh season before, looked like a leader confident taking the ball forward. He lost it suddenly this year.

Part of the problem is also Carrick will play low block/mid block which is not exactly his game, he needs to be playing higher line, getting ahead of attackers aggresively stepping out. He's got good acceleration and pace and will win more duels. but letting other teams attack is a recipe for mediocrity in general and Yoro wont excell in that. Heaven is stronger so might be a better call if we play counter football.

I seem to have a much more positive outlook about him than many here. I think we were right to spend big on him. I think his first season was really promising for an 18/19 year old in his first season in the PL and for a club of our stature. Second season syndrome last year as well, to be honest, as suffering along with the rest of the team until Carrick took over. But overall not a bad start if you have the appropriate amount of patience for a very talented 18-year-old.

What he has is a rare combination of raw materials. Long legs, pace, a long stride and flexibility allow him to be a brilliant 1-on-1 and recovery tackler (think Wan Bissaka). Good touch, composure and strength on the ball make him good at playing out of pressure. Ambition and a good eye for a pass give him the tools for a good creative passing game, increasingly a requirement for a CB at a top European club. I especially like the snap he was putting in those passes, trusting the players ahead of him to have the quality to receive the ball at pace. He can be aggressive in the tackle but also has shown when in form he knows how to time it.

Weaknesses are all things that can certainly be worked on at his age, and probably you wouldn't expect a CB to really start to be 'finished' learning until their mid 20s. That's 1) upper body strength to compete in the box, jockey to win headers, and duel when a CF backs into you. His body still looks fairly adolescent to me, and with a professional strength and conditioning regime it will come, we just have to be patient. 2) Defensive positioning. Amorim's system has probably disrupted his development here, but now he can crack on in a simple 4-at-the-back and hopefully spend the next couple of years getting to grips with it. 3) Confidence, decisiveness, mental strength to overcome setbacks. This is the one element that could be a risk, in my eyes. He may have it, he may not. He's certainly in the right place to build this, with players like Maguire and Martinez as ideal mentors, and an 'arm around the shoulder' type boss in Carrick.

I'm very confident that within a season or two he'll be a mainstay and we'll be happy we signed him. Of course, then it'll be a question of whether we've been successful enough in those seasons to keep him when the likes of Madrid or Bayern come calling.

The only serious risk, for me, would be if Carrick plays him out of position at RB. For me, he's entirely unsuitable for the position, and it will disrupt his development at a crucial phase. A pre-season game or two just for the sake of getting minutes in his legs is obviously fine. But in general especially with Martinez unreliable, De Ligt unreliable and Maguire likely to only be useful for a season or two more, it would seem mad not to commit him entirely to the CB position.

He does this thing at RCB where he leaves his central position to chase the ball; to almost press the defender from his own box as far as the corner flag.

It leaves us with only one central defender in the box once Yoro commits. Maguire doesn't commit to the ball like Yoro does and positions him centrally much better because of that.

It's going to pinch both us and Yoro on the back if he doesn't stop doing it.

Really good half at RB. Looked assured on the ball and aggressive in the tackle.

Did okay at CB but one bad mistake going to ground and it opened up his area of the pitch.

Enthusiastic and willing like quite a few CBs when they go to RB strangely enough (Brown and Ivanovic come to mind). Too small a sample size to read anything more about it position wise but having minutes on the pitch is always good. He looks quite match sharp which is nice.

There's something about his ungainly style and long limbs that doesn't give me the most confidence about his reading of the game. It's still a bit instinctive and reactive for me but he is still very young so that's coming from an expectation of his place in a competitive PL side. I'd like to think of his development as a slow and steady thing that will take quite a few year before his game matures.

I like his attitude and willingness to play at RB. He must have realised that being able to play both positions will help him if he wants to be called up for the National team too considering all the competition he has at CB.

Other than Santos and Mount, I think Yoro has been our best player in the last two games. There was one moment he didn't seem to know whether to go forward to meet his man or cover his run in behind, resulting in him doing neither and allowing Atletico to create a dangerous situation. Other than that one time though he's been really impressive. It's not just defensively either, he's been getting forward and combining with the attack quite well.

Interesting to see if he can keep it up and push himself into true competition for that role.

I’d much prefer him at rb than Dalot. But his post match interview clearly showed he wants to be a cb and there comes a point where we have to trust him there, give him an extended run of games at cb and hope to see him develop as expected

I agree.
We paid a lot of money for who at the time was the biggest young CB prospect in European football.
We need to move on from Maguire.
I don’t think playing a CB at full back adds much to the player’s understanding of a CB position at all, playing full back is much more forgiving as far as tackling and positioning goes.

He certainly can develop into potentially a better or equally good version of Kounde for France who was also a CB originally, but do we want that instead of a top CB?
Its only pre season though, will have to wait and see what happens when the league starts.

It gives him games which is better than being on the bench.

We need either Maguire or MDL to play, then it’s a case of who is the other one.

My clear choice to Heaven. But Heaven and Yoro together lacks the leadership and experience required.

I would be very comfortable with Yoro, Maguire/ MCL, Heaven and Shaw/ Hall as a defence.

I really hope this lad kicks on this season.
We're in a strange position with quite a few players that could be 'like new signings' and could absolutely elevate our season.
Yoro whether it's RB or CB
Heaven hopefully gets more minutes
Mount if he can stay free on injury
Dorgu having a run at LW. Looked good and then got injured
Lacy maybe breaking into a solid option.

If we are able to get in Hall and another midfielder, we could be on for a really solid season....

All hypothetical ifs and buts, obviously

I must say I agree with ClaytonBlack more.

Yoro was pretty good 1st season, then had a below average 2nd. It's hard to partner him up with Martinez (poor physicality) or Heavens (experience) right now, and he's worse at LCB. He's done ok in his limited RB minutes for now, and esp. at his age, having more minutes at RB is better for his development than fewer minutes if he's only a CB. I still think he'll develop into a pure CB, but he's so young that even that's not a certainty yet.

Is he the new Kounde?

Was thinking something similar. Would need a right winger who could carry all the attacking threat as Yoro is not the greatest with the ball. I suspect he will go back to CB once we have everyoje back, but not a bad option to have there

Normally I'd agree but with Yoro I think it might help.

His one big weakness is players running at him or across him from wider areas. He's struggled a few times now to stay with his man or get tight enough. Some games at fullback might help with that.

Although not sure it'll help the team if first game of the season he gets roasted by the opposition letft winger.

It’s important to remember that he’s still just 20. Saliba was signed by Arsenal at 18 and didn’t really breakthrough until he was 21/22.

Yoro hasn’t shown much yet but I still have huge confidence in him. He’s come back this preseason looking in the best physical shape, he even looks faster on the pitch. I think it’s huge that we are in the CL this season and hopefully go far in the cups too as he needs games and there weren’t enough to go round last year.

I appreciate the post, but I just cannot see this. First of all, if you are using Wan Bissaka, as any metric for what makes a good defender then you have some problems. Wan-Bissaka is rightfully, playing Championship football. His so called one-on-one work looks spectacular, and that is because it's these consistent last-ditch challenges that he has tio make, which are never the sign of good defending. Think Terry, Rio, Staam. Last ditch challenges should be rare for top defenders. This is Erik Ten Hag all over. A delusional signing. £60m? Madness. Yoro is not worth a quarter of that.

I watched the game against Atletico. Yoro remains weak, gangly, unsure.. he lacks authority and he doesn't have the sense of focus as young Heaven does. You cannot rely on Yoro, at all.. just watch him ffs. Off-loading him to a smaller club will do him a favour. He cannot play at the highest level for the top teams. Why are some of our fans happy with players who are clearly not good enough? Why is that a good thing? We aren't running a charity.

Similar to Ugarte and Zirkzee, these players cannot, simply cannot be acceptable as the quality which now defines a Manchester United player.

They are not good enough and will cause us problems.

This is insanely negative for ignoring the fact he's 20 years old.

Can't think of any "top" centre halfs in the league around this age right now

While I agree with most of your post, Yoro has actually been better at LCB for us than he has at RCB. Especially on the ball where he seemed much more comfortable bringing the ball forward himself and taking on players. But at this point if we're going to play one of the youngsters at LCB then Heaven should rightfully get the nod.

Other than Mount and Santos, Yoro has probably been our best player in these last two preseason games. Slightly ahead of Heaven who himself has been good.

Yoro struggled last season, I don't think anybody will deny that. However he was quite good in his first season, especially towards the end where he was our best defender for the last couple of months. Considering his age and what position he's playing, there's good reason to think that as he gets more experienced we'll see the good performances more and more often.

An argument could be made that we should sign a new CB and loan Yoro out for a year or two where he can be first choice (much like Arsenal did with Saliba). But we certainly shouldn't be selling him at this point.

How has his pace, acceleration and top speed looked like at RB? I think it’s still a question mark with him as at times he can look to have great recovery pace and then outpaced the next second.

Hes closer to Smalling as a RB than Kounde lads. Shows that he will not be a first choice going into season. Good for him to get minutes, and different experience. But it looks like we might go with Heaven and Maguire

When you spend that much on a player, it almost takes away the option of loaning him out for development - because it just looks like a wildly inefficient use of resources for a team that desperately needs first team quality players immediately to be spending huge sums on a player that you'll be paying to play for another club. Certainly having spent two years in the first team already, loaning him out now would be even weirder. But I'd argue even bringing him in was an inefficient use of funds, we were not in a position to spend that kind of money on a 5 year project to turn a kid into a top PL centre back.

But yeah, I've not been that impressed over the last couple of years, but Jeff is being harsh in that it's not unusual to bring in an 18-20 year old CB to not be at the level we need. The problem is more with the signing in the first place, the logic behind it wasn't there and it set the player up for a really rough journey. He needed more years in France, when Arsenal brought Saliba into their team he was 3 years older than Yoro was when we signed him.

Categorising him with Ugarte and Zirkzee isn't fair due to age profile.

There was certainly a difference in the second half having him instead of Heaven. In this match Yoro looked much more assured defensively

Thought heaven had a fairly decent game tbh

Beaten to the ball on the first goal and dove in with 2 feet on a PSG player a bit lucky to get a yellow card. With the ball he had some good moments, also some not so good ones giving the ball away. Without the ball he was poor
