Let's talk 'keepers: who do we buy and why?

I wanted Costa instead of Onana and would like to sign him but there's no way we are signing a new GK this summer when we need so many other players.

And to the people suggesting Ramsdale... Someone who has been relegated 3 times is not the level we should be aiming for.
Yes it was all his fault

Other players? Two main areas in football. Scoring goals and conceding them. Sort both out this summer and we're in business. Keeper, striker and number 10. Yeah, we could do with another centre back/centre mid, but I'd be addressing keeper and attack first.

There’s always that bloke with the really massive hands at American football stadiums, we should track him down. Reckon he’d be a star.

GK
Maz-DeLigt-Yoro
Amad-Bruno/Mainoo-Ugarte-Dorgu/Amass(?)
RAM-LAM
CF

That's the spots we need new players imo. Maybe even a new LWB, but down the line. Maybe Mount can make that RAM spot his next season if he stays healthy. Might have to replace Ugarte as well, but like LWB, down the line. Focus on these spots first.

That is about right although depending on where we see Amad next season we might need a RWB more than a RAM. He covers either of those positions well, just not sure how RA sees him long term.

I think given we are targeting younger players for the outfield positions it makes sense to go for a more experienced keeper, and one that is relatively cheap. There should be a load of keepers at that stage in their career that are substantially better than Onana

Suzuki makes Onana look dependable. I watch quite a lot of Serie A and every time I see him he is doing something stupid. Signing him would be like doubling down on the Onana disaster.
Totally. I really don't see any quality GK there. I hoep it's just lazy journalism (since we've had genuine interest when he was playing in Belgium), but paying 40m for him would be just Onana 2.0.

Vitek is doing much better than Kovar and is ours.
Leverkusen want to get rid of Kovar, we'd probably pay less then what we sold him for as he flopped there.
Brief on Vitek. Can't do anything with the two goals, but two great saves at 0.16 with a huge stretch to hit the post (Onana) would never get his arms near this and top save at 1.05. His defenders are pretty shocking with especially the 2nd goal. Hearing good things about him and may get Golden Glove award.

Joan García. He is a top keeper. The best spanish GK, better than Raya. And 23 years old. He should be your first choice. His price is 25m euros (he has a clause in his contract).

If you want a giant keeper: Bulka. 200 cm, homegrown (ex Chelsea) and he plays for Ratcliffe's other club (Nizza).

Talksport linking us with a bid for Parma keeper Zion Suzuki (22). Anyone seen him play for Parma?

I think we need to go the other way and sign an older head with a bit of experience. We need another Edwin Van Der sar circa 2005 to settle us down.

I get Ineos like sell on value but a young keeper in this team right now is a recipe for disaster.

Zion Suzuki
James Trafford
Lucas Chevalier
Senne Lammens

These are the goalkeepers we’ve apparently shown interest in - and while there’s no clear frontrunner, the theme is obvious: all young, all full of potential, and none with much top-level experience.

It’s definitely a bit of a gamble. In a team that’s still shaky both defensively and going forward, going for an experienced, reliable keeper would probably make more sense. Someone who can organise the backline, stay calm under pressure, and bring some stability.

What makes it more frustrating is that our current keeper is 29, has played at the highest level, and has all the tools you'd expect. But for whatever reason, it’s just not clicking.

I like Bulka, and he's in his last year next year I think?

Never seen Garcia. Vitek looks promising having looked at some highlights actually. A sea of options out there, we don't need perfect we just need dependable.

Suzuki seems like an obvious candidate as we tried to get him from Japan. Seems to be doing well in Italy, but the price seems a bit ridiculous.

he's very errorprone. Onana 2.0

I'll get panned for this no doubt but I wouldn't be averse to signing Aphonse Areola from West Ham, he's always impressed me.

He's 32, so that buys us a season or two to make sure we nail it and buy the right goalkeeper for the long term.

I think we are stuck with Onana as there won't be a market for him (transfer fee and wages). So the club will try to find a younger solid actual successor to de gea and gradually phase out Onana or allow him to leave for a cheaper fee as his contract runs down.

It still baffles me that scouts, the other guys who make football signings decisions looked at him and said yep, that's the guy to replace de gea.

Antony, Mount, Onana so many terrible signings that should never have been signed off.

A club like Utd needs an elite shot stopper for me personally that's more important than any outfield ability to play out of the back and all that bollocks.

Clean sheets win you games and eventually cups and titles.

Suzuki at the reported 40m seems like a crazy punt. Not seen a lot of him but seems similar to Onana in that he at times can be a great shot stopper but has too many mistakes in him. Given the unreliability of Onana I can only see us going for someone who is more level-headed, solid, consistent.

Lammens I know little about, but feels like we would be bringing him as a Bayindir replacement to push Onana more seriously, rather than someone who is ready to come in as our 1st choice keeper.

That's where I think someone like Trafford who has been excellent this year or Chevalier who has been very good for 3 seasons now at Lille would be the better shouts out of those there.

Other shouts which I like are Milinkovic-Savic at Torino who reportedly will only cost 20m (not sure if we have been linked but Chelsea have) and also Joan Garcia (who we have been linked with) who is having a great season at Espanyol. This is Garcia's first season however so he is more of a risk but has been a standout in the second best league in the world and could be an Emi Martinez type break-out.

Other honourable mentions that I wouldn't be surprised to hear us be linked to is the Onona-out rumours pick up momentum:

Svilar at Roma
Flekken at Brentford

Yeah that definitely helped us in 2005

2m quid as well! We lost the ability to find bargains like that years ago. People who say we can’t find these players because we’re man United forget we used to do it all the time.

I'm reading that Milinkovic-Savic has a £17m release clause. If that's true it's a no brainer.

Very good value for a solid keeper. I've only watched highlights really and he looks decent, though doesn't stand out as world class in any particular sense. Stats look great though.

If the budgets tight £17m would seem smart business.

Any of the lads mentioned above who are costing around 20m, or Vitek back would be an upgrade.
We could surely sell Onana for 20m.
I’d stay away from Suzuki if he’s costing around 40m.

Surely a massive upgrade on Onana

Joan Garcia from Espanyol, very solid keeper. Won’t cost an arm and a leg. Made some quality saves in his last game and kept a clean sheet. And he’s only like 24

It’s clear as day we need 2 GKs. I’m hoping that Vitek is deemed as an exciting prospect for a backup so that we only need to be on the market for one new GK. If we’re able to shift Onana it’s not an impossible task to replace him…

Can we bring Kovar back?

Livaković is not in Mourinho's plans, maybe we should go for him.

We should be getting someone more experienced one and also has good height to deal with crosses and physicality in PL.
