Let's talk 'keepers: who do we buy and why?

That's the name that came to mind aswell given Man. United will be working on a budget this summer where they can't just drop 50m on endless positions.

Ramsdale had a really weird career. Three relegations but also a very good two years at Arsenal where he shone in secure defensive units, very nearly won the league and had a good rapport going with the Arsenal fanbase.

Think he's been linked with West Ham but if he's available for 20m then I could see Man. United making a move just to see if he could get back to Arsenal level and provide serious competition for Onana.

Also a very big part they didn't win the league, his performance against West Ham away was terrible and he chucked at least one in from memory and maybe 2 pretty sure that game is why Arsenal got rid

Not a new link. The new season just started in Norway, apparantly he's been sensational again. Weakness is his foot work, so he's not a "modern" keeper per se.

Just get the guy we should have got in 2023 instead of Onana (Costa)

Technique on this guy.

Riemann is a wild mix of old school maniac in the goal and a very modern "sweeper keeper". His last club Bochum kicked him out for attacking team mates

Young English keepers who are worth a look at are James Trafford@ Burnley (22) and Sam Tickle @ Wigan (23)... One of the top rated young keepers in Europe is Lucas Chevalier @ Lille (23) and I think we should take a serious look at him as being our first choice keeper... Cheers

I think that's what United are missing. Someone in the dressing room with that desire and will to win, allied to the willingness to attack someone in the shower if they put a foot out of place.

Keeper is the one position you have to get right. You can't be chopping and changing your keeper every week if you get it wrong.

Up to a certain point I agree. But believe me, Riemann is over the top in that regard

1st GK: Milinkovic-Savic
2nd GK: Vitek
3rd GK: someone older from the Championship

Sell Onana and Bayindir

Who was the GK that had a great Euros. Was one of the underdog teams. Turkey or Georgia is coming to mind. I’m not saying buy him just based on that but what’s he like for his club?

Edit: Definitely not Turkey ffs
Edit 2: It was actually neither team I mentioned and not even the right tournament ffs. It was Morocco.

Is there any older Van Der Sar types knocking about that we could get on the cheap?

I think that would be ideal.

Young keepers are always risky.

You're probably thinking of the Georgia keeper Mamardashvili. He is a really good goalkeeper in La Liga for Valencia but annoyingly he is joining Liverpool in the summer!

Balls! I was actually thinking of Morocco in the World Cup (time really does fly) and a guy called Bono. Plays in Saudi now and we’re supposed to be sending players there and not bringing them back! I do remember the Georgian keeper being solid though.

Mamardashvili. Liverpool player.

This is interesting

"..At least one person who used to work at Carrington feels Onana’s hands are too hard when making saves, and that he needs to soften them in order to direct the ball away from danger. Partly on this basis, his signing was not a unanimous decision in United’s recruitment department..."

"..The £43.8million ($57.8m) fee agreed with Inter is amortised into United’s accounts over the length of Onana’s five-year contract, so he still holds a book value of £26.3m. Finding a buyer to bid more than that is expected to be a struggle. It is for this reason that some people close to the situation believe Onana will ultimately stay at United, unless a loan becomes palatable..."

Such a stupid, stupid transfer. Antony, Onana, Mount the three expensive gifts Ten Hag has left us.

Kepa is looking good and has impressed for Bournemouth this season. Should be a cheap option with a year left of his Chelsea contract.
He's also the most expensive Spanish footballer in history and was probably given wages to match.

If jim plays this right. Utd could make a few pound, sell the Turkish lad plus onana. Get 30 to 35m for both. Then pick up a first choice keeper for 25 to 30m,bring back our loan keeper for 2md choice, and pick up an experienced free keeper for 3rd choice. Come on jim save is from being bankrupt

You dont need to break the bank to sign a reliable goalkeeper, other clubs had shown that, even Man United had shown that before Ten Hag came up. From Spanish La Liga, Wojciech Szczęsny's contract with Barcelona is up this summer, yes he's old, he'll be 35 years in few days but he's homegrown, vastly experience of playing for big clubs, perfect replacement for Bayindir and Heaton. On the younger side, you have Joan Garcia, the captain of Espanyol, a relatively unknown and young goalkeeper, still 23 years old and last time i heard he has 25m euros release clause. Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczęsny for 25m is a better set of goalkeepers than Onana and Bayindir whose transfers combined 53m.

Haven’t seen many mentions of Restes on here, is it because of his age or is he just another digital hype job à la Aréola, Lafont?

Southampton 3-3 he conceded after about 15 seconds didn't he the next week?

Still though it is a very low base to replace Onana and the back up so I can see you just getting experienced keeper in while seeing what young prospects are developing as despite all the hysteria in the other threads you aren't going to be dropping 60m each on five key positions all over the pitch so will have to be compromise in some areas.

How good is he at the moment?

Roma might appoint ten hag as their manager so there is a chance we could get him by swap deal with Onana.
I was only basing that off the Lazio game I watched the other day. Rated very highly though by all accounts.

Genuinely horrible stats on this guy.

Can't pass, doesn't do high claims, doesn't sweep, sucks at shot stopping. He might actually be the worst Ligue 1 GK by some margin.

Where on earth did you hear anything good about him?

Nick Pope maybe if Ramsdale/Kelleher is going there?

Loads of options out there that will likely require fees between 20-35m:

Svilar
Milinkovic-Savic
Flekken
Chevalier
Joan Garcia
Yehvann Diouf

If we can get a cool £25m for Onana from Saudi and £5m from Bayindir then we’re should at a minimum break even on fees and wages.

FC 25. ;)

Tbh he's having a very off season by his standards. The whole team has been rocked though, the transition after Conceição leaving has been difficult. Also, he won't be cheap at all, no chance we can spend big again at the GK position.

I think that's what United are missing. Someone in the dressing room with that desire and will to win, allied to the willingness to attack someone in the shower if they put a foot out of place.
Onana has/had that attitude. That first pre-season game when he gave Maguire a bollocking. Shame he couldn't back that up with actual performances, looks like a clown now.

Really hope our scouts put in some good work and get some names not spoken about much. We could have 3 keepers moving out this season which means we need a minimum of 2! Ideally have one experienced, one before peak and one of the youth keepers to make up the numbers for next season.

This is a position that lacks quality on the market. I would much prefer to go down the route of the raw diamond that won't cost a kidney, so I'm jumping on that bandwagon.

I'd go for someone experienced and someone young. For the experienced option I'd go for Vanja Milinkovic Savic. He's a huge presence in the box at 6ft8, he's old school, he tops the saves ratio in the Serie A at 115 (he was 4th last season), he's a leader, he's got 1 year contract left at Torino and he knows United well.

Yes would be a no brainer. Also has a 17m release clause I think.

A Diogo Costa or Mike Miganan would be ideal for the experienced keeper. Then a young prospect as backup.

However Ramsdale + a young keeper would probably be more realistic given our finances and that's dependent on shifting Onana and bayider.

Said this months ago and was berated by a poster where that he had a bad game against United. To be honest, not everyone can play at their best every game, but either Onana, we celebrate when catches a ball. That's how bad things have got to.
