The obvious candidate seemed Joan Garcia for just 21m, but he appears Barca bound. Kepa for 5m also seemed like another potentially smart decision. I’d much rather have Kepa than Onana, who I genuinely think is one of - if not the - worst keepers in the league; no hyperbole. And at just 5m is a fecking steal. But I appreciate that perhaps the best approach is to only bring in players who are the absolute standard we require, rather than stop gap options - irrespective of the price. The problem is the budgetary strain. Can we really afford to invest what we’d need to to get the keeper that’s at the world class standards needed? Probably not this summer. And if that thinking takes you back to just getting someone better than Onana in for the short term, then you come back to Garcia and Kepa as great deals.
Donnarumma would be an immense signing but that feels nearly impossible, perhaps Hermansen from Leicester? Seems well regarded, and solid. Certainly had tons of practice this season. And would presumably be affordable. Higher up the food chain, Costa seems an obvious answer, but would be expensive, no doubt. I honestly don’t know much about the keeper market, not enough to speculate with any confidence. If a couple of years ago you’d told me we were replacing De Gea with Sommer, I’d have said that was a shit idea. Instead we signed Onana, Inter replaced him with Sommer, and Sommer looks almost infinitely better for a fraction of the price. So all I can do is hope that our data analysis and scouting department have some sensible recruitment targets in mind, and we’ll bring in a solid, talented keeepr for a good price, even if it’s an unheralded name. I am sure there are some very good options out there that aren’t the glitzing eye catching names often thrown around. We just have to lean heavily on data and expertise.
