Let's talk 'keepers: who do we buy and why?

He's bad on the ball. Even BVB fans have divided opinion on him as he is a class shot stopper. But do we really want another De Gea type GK (he's nowhere as good)?

His main job is to keep the cleen sheet.

His market value is really high.

Compare to the more well known Porto goalkeeper. Good with his feets.

Both have same market value = 40 mill euros

I don't mind a new Peter Schmeichel.

United shall command theirs Cbs and cm playmaker to start most of team build up. Not that job to their goalkeeper. Then it will lead to United outfield player become more passive and not command the ball. Then they shall do.

Example Onana is dwelling on the ball and slow the rhythm of the passing a lot. And i do see that United cm players become more and more lesser deep to command the ball. Onana do play long a lot.
This has to change.

Your goalkeeper can't be your first and main playmaker and build up. It is the Cbs and nr.6 job. Like Steven Gerrard to dicate and tempo and passing and build up.

Again. When you have the same market value as Diogo Costa who is rating as one of the best upcoming GK. Gregor Kobel is a really high rated goalkeeper too.

No we shouldn't sign a player who's gpod at shot stopping, but can't play the style that the manager wants.

Can we get a poll asking who think's he will start the season, failing that, a poll asking who people would prefer.

That's the same rational that landed us with Onana.
Not really. It was the right idea to sign someone with those skills but Onana turned out to be even shite in that area he was supposed to be an upgrade.

Marco Carnesecchi linked today. As much as I want Diogo Costa. It is another big money move and can’t imagine funds are available after signing Cunha and Mbuemo looking likely . Carnsecchi is 25 still can develop but has international experience and played a fair amount of senior football. Definitely worth looking at. If we end up buying Martinez for £40 million it would like Murtough snuck back into the building.

Yahia Fofana at Angers is reportedly available for less than £10m this summer (1 year left on his deal) - very accomplished shot stopper, absolutely massive, strong on crosses / command of box. Newcastle, Brentford and Leeds are supposed to be interested. If we're keeping Onana and want someone solid but cheap to compete with him, we could do worse.

Sergio Romero at 38 can be a stop gap...
Someone in the mould of Sergio Romero is exactly who I think we should be signing in goal.

I think we'll get a lot more benefit from signing a dependable if unspectacular keeper on the cheap than spending a decent wedge. I think there's probably only one keeper "on the market" who would actually justify a big price tag (Donnarumma, if you believe the rumours), and I don't think we can get him right now.

By the time Liverpool had spent big on Alisson, they were already a well-established side. They'd reached the Champions League final the summer before, and Karius' unfortunate performance was the final proof that a top keeper was the missing piece that'd push them all the way. We aren't even close to that point right now, so I think it'd be something of a waste to spend big on a keeper when we can probably get someone in to do the job much cheaper.

I don't know if you're joking, or if he's even close to the player he was. But 2016 Sergio Romero is exactly the sort of goalkeeping signing id prefer we make. 40m on Martinez just screams Woodward.

Amazing we had him and prime De Gea at one point. We are miles away from that.

Even now you can make a case that he's at least on par (or slightly better) compared to Onana. And this is pure statistics, not counting brainfarts or bringing the entire team down with dodgy goalkeeping. And sometimes that's all you need to get the best out of your defenders, a solid GK.

Weren’t Milan asking for £25m for Maignan? Surely that makes more sense than £40m for Martinez.

If we can move Onana for about 25 million, Costa would be a big upgrade.

I know Costa was all the rage a few years ago, it seems his hype has dropped a bit? but honestly, I'd be happy to see a new face in goal.
Onana is erratic, and just not somebody to give confidence to his defenders.

Oh, and his ball playing skills aren't all that. Honestly, the way he swaggers around his box with the ball at his feet suggest he ooozes confidence, but 5yd passes, even De Gea could do that. His long balls are terrible, and always give the ball back to the opposition

Yeah didn't he have a bit of a dodgy tournament recently

Looks like Sunderland want Bulka.

Never seen him play, but generally am disappointed with our lack of activity & links to French players. Not saying we should get Nice's best players (UEFA made sure we couldn't), but we should be able to tap in to their scouting.

It seems highly unlikely that we can shift Onana this summer, but we can shift Bayindir.

If we could sign either a steady-eddy veteran for a low fee on decent wages, or a 20-24yo prospect for a bit more on lower wages, then we’ll still improve the goalkeeping department.

Onana is useless, but some proper competition means we could actually drop him if he starts donning his clown shoes again.
