Let's talk 'keepers: who do we buy and why?

Apparently Yann Sommer is available (even if he's older, a better option than a declining Ter Stegen or an expensive Martinez). Wouldn't be the worst stop gap and we could loan out Onana somewhere.

What about Beadle? At worst he’d be an upgrade on Bayindir and if he didn’t kick on, could move him down the line. Any number two that came in would fancy their chances of being able to usurp Onana.

That said, despite being dead for nearly 20 years, I’d back Jeremy Beadle to usurp Onana. Ironically, he’d probably have a shorter blooper reel…

Wouldn’t his small hand be quite an issue, even if not dead?

He was pretty good but didnt really impress at the CWC. He's cheap but 29 and during his only european stint in 2023 at Valladolid he lost his starter spot to fecking Jordi Masip, Barca's backup GK in the late 00's who never played a game for them.
There are so many good young GKs in Europe right now that could be easily attainable for a club like Man Utd, it's a weird profile to go after. He's a lot better than Onana (not a high bar to overcome) so it's fine I guess, could also work as a backup if he's not too much of an arse.

Ter Stegen is not really "declining", that's Barca's narrative to get rid of him and scapegoat him. He was one of the Barca's best players before last season and this season he was injured most of the time.

Sommer is also already 37 while Ter Stegen is only 33. Ter Stegen is only 10 million Euros and he would be a bargain to buy for that kind of price. I am not necessarily against Sommer but Ter Stegen has a lot more years left at the top level than Sommer. Ter Stegen also wants more minutes because he's going to be a no.1 GK for Germany at 2026 WC.

Ter Stegen is quite injury prone though. And Yan Sommer went to the CL final, so he still is competitive I reckon.

I know that Ter Stegen is more injury prone but he can be a 4 or 5 years solution for Utd (gk position) as opposed to one or two year solution by Sommer.

We need to buy two goalkeepers anyway. One experienced gk like Ter Stegen or Sommer and one backup keeper. Onana and Bayndir are both terrible and both of them need to go. Ultimately, I would choose Ter Stegen because he is 3 years younger and has more professional years in his tank.

Yea but Ter Stegen would cost more than what he is worth while Sommer might be available for a cut-price while we could still get someone younger like Lammens - or trust in Vitek.

According to Transfermarkt, he's worth around 10 million pounds. You can't find a better goalkeeper for that kind of money at that age. We paid like 50 million pounds for Onana for feck sake. For a cheaper option, I don't think that there is a better GK than Ter Stegen.

My first target would be Costa but he's too expensive and he's worth like 50 million pounds. Our first priority should be a striker and that's where we need to splash a lot of money.

We haven’t got the budget for a top tier, undisputed number 1 this summer; it’ll be a case of upgrading Bayindir for under £20m. That’ll either be a veteran or a promising youngster.

Onana will almost certainly start the season as first choice, but if we’ve upgraded the backup they’ll be starting the cup games and know if Andre starts up his big top performances again, they’ll have a shot at being first choice.

One name I haven’t heard mentioned is Pope. If Newcastle sign Trafford, he might be available for £10m or so. A completely uninspiring, solid and totally unspectacular mid table keeper, but that’s better than Onana. Could help us through the next couple of seasons.

Barcelona have just extended Szczesny’s contract. Surely that means an exit for Ter Stegen. Would he be an upgrade?

Forest have just agreed to sell Elanga to Newcastle for £55m, our cut of that would probably cover the fee for John Victor
Who the feck is John Victor? Anyway there are only three options the club should be considering, Ter Stegen on a free this summer if Barca rip up his contract, Donnarumma if he runs out his deal next summer and is looking for a pay day (we are always good for that, but he has proven his quality) or either of the French wunderkinds (Chevalier or Restes). So technically 4 options.
