Lewis Hall

What brain does Shaw have in the final third? Diouf is galaxies better than him going fwd.
Shaw is an extremely smart player in the final third in terms of making the right pass, retaining possession, and clipping crosses in. Unfortunately, he doesn't have legs anymore and was never a great crosser or goalscorer to begin with. Doesn't mean we should buy Diouf who is a 15 year old's version of a good fullback just because he's "marauding"

I don't think this is a runner this summer, there a bigger priorities to address and Newcastle would demand big money. Could be worth a revisit next summer though.
We can't afford to neglect LB this window

I keep seeing this for pretty much every player we are linked with.

LB- We have other priorities.

Rogers/Ndiaye - We have other priorities

Anderson - can't spend 115 Million on him. We have other priorities.

What are these other priorities? Is the idea to buy three 40 million CMs and that's it? And then blame Carrick when things go south.

We need to spend big at some point on some player if we hope of competing with the best. Can't just buy 4/5 average players for middling prices and then expect miracles.

We will spend big if they give us encouragement, however even with that there is obviously still cutoff. I really hope we are in for this guy although if Tonali leaves then the chances of it decrease

Oh yeah, completely forgot about him. Wasn't he somewhere around £75mil ?
£77.6m apparently, according to this article in the Guardian.

On the topic of Lewis Hall, I like the look of him, but feel Newcastle will ask for money in that territory for him. Buying from PL clubs is becoming harder and harder, and I'm not sure I buy the "Prem Proven" argument. The downside is maybe lower, but it seems like the upside might be too. For example, of the last 15 Prem Players of the Season winners, only 2 had transferred from another Prem club: Van Diijk and Kante. The rest are either homegrown (Phil Foden, Gareth Bale and I guess you could make an argument Jamie Vardy is too) or like the vast majority, brought in from abroad (Bruno, Salah x2, Haaland, KDB x2, Ruben Dias [this one's a bit of a head-scratcher though, was he really that good?], Hazard, Suarez, Kompany, Vidic). There is a lot of value to be found outside the Premier League, and while Lewis Hall is a very good player with a lot of potential, I'm sure there are at least 5 players in his age bracket in world football that wouldn't cost nearly as much, and will go on to have at least as good careers as him.

Raum is probably one of best non PL alternatives

Barcelona are chasing Nathaniel Brown (who could be a quality option for us at just over £50m himself), but if they do get him - I’d absolutely be taking Balde over Hall for probably half the price too. And Hall is quality, although I do suspect that all he has is gametime over Amass. Very similar profile.

Going to Bayern apparently

How's Alphonso Davis been recently? Could be a cheap pickup. Our defensive signings from Bayern have done decently lately.

Alphonso Davies is basically Patrick Dorgu (albeit faster but less robust). If we planned on Davies left back we should at least be trying Dorgu there. Davies joined Bayern as a winger too, but is not good enough to play winger for them, although he still does for Canada. Very similar profiles.

One of the few players we’re been linked with the potential to be United standard.

Please don’t waste £40m on more shit from Germany or Italy.

Do you feel the same about Dorgu?
I feel they offer something similiar in different ways.

But why would we spend money on someone of Diouf’s profile when we already have Dorgu? There’s nothing stopping us playing Dorgu at LB if we want a more physical, pacy but less defensively sound option.

I’m genuinely baffled by anyone who doesn’t think we need a LB this summer. It’s such an obvious area of weakness going into next season. We need two quality players for each position and if Dorgu is seen as more of a winger by the club then we desperately meed a quality option at LB to rotate and compete with Shaw. Plus his contract is up next year so we need a long term replacement anyway.

At 70m, he'd be pretty low on the priority list.

He isnt the finished product and at that price, you can get most full backs at any time.. If it is 70m. this wont be a steal and missing out on him wont mean we'd have to overpay to get someone else...

Focus on other areas/players for now.

I think it's merely a matter of priority. Dorgu can still play LB, and if need be we have Dalot who can play on the left whilst Mazraoui fills the RB slot. Harry Amass might also be in Carrick's plan. If we are truly down to bare bones Diego Leon might get a look as well.

If Lewis Hall is available at a good price, sure why not; but if he's gonna cost us in the region of 75M I think our priorities right now is to make sure we have a solid midfield plus a backup striker.

Dorgu is clearly seen as a winger by the club - he hasn’t even featured at LB under Carrick has he? Dalot is awful on the left and our whole play down our left flank suffers massively when he fills in there.

We’re going to have 2/3 games a week next year and Shaw does not have the legs to play that many games. Leon looks miles off a first team starter for a team competing in the PL and CL.

Moving Dorgu there means we’re short at LW. Moving Dalot there (as terrible an idea as that is) means we’re short at RB. Those aren’t sustainable answers to us only have one senior LB in a season where we’re aiming to compete in the CL, PL and domestic cups.

Of course CM is a priority, and if we can’t get Hall for a more reasonable price we’ll look elsewhere. But there’s a reason that LB is reportedly one of our priorities this summer. It’s one of our most obvious areas of weakness after CM.

Usual fan channels getting in a flap about the £70m figure with thumbnail bait like its crazy. That figure definitely gives me hope he could be signed for around £60m. I do wonder who are the alternatives now with Brown going to Bayern

This unfortunately is down to whether Newcastle is willing to sell him for less. They are not exactly strapped for cash and have even less reason to sell now after they've sold Gordon.

I do not disagree with you at all. While Carrick sees Dorgu as a winger; at the same time, if situation calls for it, he can still play Dorgu at LB whilst Cunha plays LW. Basically there's flexibility to shuffle players around. Is it the best solution? Of course not. But if we are operating with some budget constraints in mind, as per Berrada's interview, the club intend to plug the most immediate gap and fill the rest according to whether we can shift the likes of Ugarte and Rashford.

If the situation calls for it we can play Mount or Bruno or Fletcher in a midfield 2. But noone would consider those options a reasonable justification for not rebuilding our midfield properly and adding meaningful depth in preparation for competing in the CL and PL. So why should we try to use similar justifications for LB? It’s still a key position and as it stands we only have one senior LB. And he’s a player with notorious injury issues who hasn’t had the legs to play two games a week, going into a season when we’re going to be playing at least two games a week.

Addressing an obvious squad weakness should happen via the transfer market, not via weakening our depth and options in other key parts of the pitch. That’s just moving the problem elsewhere. Because if Dorgu plays there then he can’t come on as fresh legs to replace Cunha when we might need to change things up in attack. Dalot covering there means our first choice RB isn’t playing RB, and we’re left without a proper sub option for Maz.

The reality is that any team aiming to compete in the PL and CL needs at least two quality options for each position. The expectation this summer is that we have enough funds to rebuild midfield and add some depth elsewhere. That may well not be Hall if we’re priced out, but LB should be a very high priority nonetheless.

I will admit it's not ideal we couldn't have at least got into negotiations for him before they sold Gordon

This is the correct way of thinking. I see a lot of people double-counting players when looking at our depth and using the fact they can play multiple positions as an excuse to leave us short of the standard 2-players-per-position. A player who can cover other positions in an emergency is a bonus, not something to rely on.

On the flip side, you have people who want to stockpile players in positions we already have numbers with no thought of what we do with the players already here. There's a lot of fans advocating going into next season with 3 left wingers and 6 centre backs for example judging by who they want us to sign. If you want to upgrade the quality of certain positions where we already have numbers you really have to let someone go to make room.

He is good and has the potential to be a permanent Shaw's replacement. He is English, young, has the talent to raise our bottom level.

Bad timing, now that Newcastle have sold Gordon for crazy fee,I am not sure if they're under pressure to sale anymore.

I do agree with the general theme.

However we barely get one player out of MDL and Martinez, and Maguire is in his last season. So CB is a serious issue. We can only go for 5 CBs if we get rid of at least 2 of those.

Hall might leave for two reasons - financial constraints and alleged friction between Howe and himself. I guess he might also want more Champions League football having had a taste of it.

But Gordon already going makes it a good deal less likely, in my opinion.

Yeah and if City can't get Anderson they will reportedly go for Tonali. I dont know but I think there is no way Newcastle will sell Gordon, Hall AND Tonali. On the other hand none of them is proven worldclass but Newcastle would get 200-230M for them all in all. Enough money for the overhaul they might need after this bad season.
