Lewis Hall

Would love hall but after selling their 3 best players I just do not see it.
You could argue - after selling their 2 best players I just do not see it. If he doesn't want to stay - they will probably sell him. Depends how badly he wants to leave

De Bruyne wasn't 'good enough' to break through at Chelsea. Hall isn't comparable of course but Chelsea aren't the best when it comes to assessing their youth players.

I seem to recall they had an Egyptian winger for a couple of seasons who never quite made it at Chelsea as well

Yeah he needs to do what Bruno did a few weeks ago and tell Newcastle he wants to leave club

The likes of Mazraoui and Dalot would be considered as right back who can cover left back if required not a natural left back. The same with Dorgu, he would be considered as winger who can cover left back if required not a natural left back. In addition, it’s not like Shaw has the same fitness and free injury record as Patrice Evra where we can comfortably to have non-natural left back as cover. Therefore, if we are not going to make 3rd midfield signing, the next position would be left back because we only have Shaw as our left back as we already have 7 attackers for 3 positions, 5 CB for 2 positions, and 2 right backs for 1 position.

Lewis Hall would be considered as both proven PL and long term left back signing to compete with Shaw this season and replacing Shaw next season when his contract expired. If we want Hall, we better act quickly now because the longer we wait, Newcastle will not even want to discuss as they won't have enough time to find replacement and Hall is their only natural first team left back in the club while someone like Dan Burn is already 34 years old which I don't think Newcastle will be keen to give the left back role to 34 years old Dan Burn.

Not the attitude we should be having really. I know our owners tend to tell lies etc but for a club that always says wants to build for the future… I’d rather pay a bit extra for a solid young player who has potential to be the best lb in the league for years to come rather than a 28 year old who we’ll have to replace again in a few years… that would be very poor squad planning. Get this Lb nailed down and sorted and then we can improve other positions
Ofcourse it would not be optimal. And that's the hidden cost of doing things cheap.

I think we would have needed to act earlier in the window, before Newcastle sold their three best players, too late now.

Yep. I think the owners would be happy if we could just qualify for cl every season without breaking the bank, they wouldn't be bothered if we never won the league again. We should be a giant, still mentioned on par with real, barca, Bayern, psg. Them days are long gone though and may never be coming back. The difference is they crave success above all else, we don't apparently
In theory what you say might make sense, but in practice it doesn't work in the PL. The only way to almost guarantee CL qualification each season is to be competing for the title until quite late in the season. Not necessarily winning it, but close enough that we're too far ahead for the chasing pack to catch. And if we're that close then we should win at least the occasional one.

After those teams actually competing for the title, there are simply too many teams chasing those remaining two or three spots for anyone to 'settle' for just qualifying for the CL. If you aim for that, you'll inevitably miss out quite often. It's not like the other leagues where there's such a big gap that teams can basically aim to be the 'best of the rest' on a consistent basis.

He isnt worth anywhere near the price Newcastle are asking for, it would be incredibly foolish to spend £80m on an unproven LB who waant good enough for Chelsea and has missed 34 games through injury over the last 2 seasons.
Well he wasn’t ever “not good enough” for Chelsea. Their fans were quite upset about him going because he did fine in the few games he got for them before going on loan and then being sold for pure profit

I agree with you, if you set out just to qualify for the cl you will miss out just as much as you qualify, as has been happening. I feel they aren't thinking like that though and think they can box clever and qualify for the cl consistently without big spending

I think Arsenal completed the Bruno G might help us to understand Hall’s valuation. There is no way that Hall should be valued higher than Bruno G and Tonali as those two were their best players and ones of their top assets. So I think Hall will be valued maximum at £70m or could be lower. If we are lucky, we could get him for £55m-£60m (a little more expensive than Cucurella), if £60m is rejected then we might end up paying £55m or £60m plus adds on.

I’ve been a fan of Hall for a while now, going back to when I watched him at LB and CM for Chelsea. He’s a cracking player.

But, for £60m+ I’m not sure. He seems to be injured quite often and he’s not really absolutely top class just yet either. I’ve seen him have bad games too. For a start I can’t see Newcastle selling at that. But also, I think I’d be enquiring about Kadioglu too. He’s a very similar player in terms of style and skill, seems more reliable in terms of fitness, and is a beast at covering his side of the pitch.

I’d want to know what he would cost in comparison if I was involved in our recruitment.

Ornstein has just said in the Athletic FC podcast he doesn't expect Man Utd to sign Hall this summer. He did say though that's mostly because Newcastle will not sell.

Interestingly he mentioned LB and CM are the 2 areas he expects business to be done, but doesn't know if it's one or the other or both. Also doesn't know what's the chronology of any future incomings. Really seems like Ineos have stopped any information from coming out at all.

He was making fun of himself saying he expected Utd to be amongst thr busiest clubs in the window but it hasn't transpired yet, although of course there is still time for it to change.

Ornstein said Hall to United won’t happen in his opinion can’t send the link.

Ineos are not spending money this summer we just need to face the reality. We are fairly fecked for next season being honest. We are nowhere near ready to go into 4 competitions with such a thin squad. If shaw is out we basically have no recognised left back. Any injury to Sesko/ a midfielder we're equally in trouble.

Surely they’ll have to start spending that cash soon though. Sitting on what Bruno £80m, Gordon £75m, Tonali £100m. Why’ve they hardly spent that £255m? Plus Hall at say £55m that’s £310m they’re just seemingly scratching their arse with apart from Toure and Bamba who are completely unproven

we've been busy inquiring for players and then walk away from any deal.

If it's not a release clause or paying full asking price on a player that's pining for us we don't have a fecking clue how to do any deals. Pretty clear at this point. "Best in class"
Its almost like we're being run by an organization who ran OGC Nice and Lausanne to the ground and thought it was a good idea to give a 3-5-2 manager the job at a club whose been working with wingers since its inception. I've lost count of how many players we've been interested at and had walked away from once we learnt about the price. Anderson, Fernandes, Hall, Tonali..the list go on and on. If we can't afford these sort of EPL proven players then we've got to look elsewhere

Thanks that really lifts the spirits on this one

Good price for him, considering all the factors (young, English, good season in the league, etc.). We paid £50M for Wan-Bissaka 7 years ago.
And 30m for a teenage Shaw 12 years ago, a football transfer inflation calculator has that at 61m now

Yep, but when we look elsewhere we also seem to drag our feet and not have any conviction about it. It feels like there's 0 confidence in how we should approach the window and it's August at this point. Santos and Tielemans were so straightforward that we did them quickly, but anything more complicated and it seems like we feck it up or distance ourselves.

That’s not the price, unfortunately. Just what we were willing to pay. Perhaps the club leaking it to convince fans they tried. Newcastle will absolutely not want to sell him or anyone else now, and would charge a huge premium to do so, which we won’t be able to afford.

I like him but that’s a bit much. I reckon he’d be decent for us so It’d be a good transfer in the long run, but not great a value one.

On the plus side, it’s not a big enough fee to be an albatross around his neck, but I still think Newcastle will want more.

Ornstein apparently saying he doesn't think we will get hall.
We're not going to pay what they will demand, should've tried before they sold their 3 best players for 250m. If we really wanted him we've messed up by waiting, or we actually aren't interested at all

This transfer window has been a massive fail to date. This is just another kick in the bollocks.

I can see a scenario where we very publicly state our interest this summer, get another year out of Shaw and then buy Hall next summer. With 2 years left on his contract and the PIF project falling apart, £40-50 million next summer and him arriving as first choice wouldn't be the worst outcome.

All we know is we asked about it and that's it. We are interested but how interested are we, we don't know if he's first or last on our LB search. People whining above about missing out on another target need to give it a rest. We called probably got told 80 or more and told Newcastle we're looking at others, does that count as missing out on a target?

Or, we try that, he has an excellent season, a few big clubs bid for him next summer, he goes back to Chelsea for 70m as its too much for us.

Ornstein apparently saying he doesn't think we will get hall.

He needs to stick to his Bomba’s.

He don’t have a clue. Bruno.G just went for £75m and pretty sure Newcastle aren’t holding players to ransom like they tried to previously.

Hall seem to be pushing that he’s willing to leave and we are making it very clear this won’t be a deal where we are paying Spurs money.

I’m pretty satisfied with this one. Might just take a while.

That's true for most clubs and transfers though. Arsenal are paying £75m for a soon to be 29 year old. City paid £116m for Anderson and Chelsea £117m for Rogers with obvious dodgy PSR shenanigans going on between them and Villa; all 3 of those clubs either having investigations going on and/or having paid fines for said dodgy financial stuff.
