I'm saying if we wanted him you go early, before his club sell off half their first team. There's no point asking now as they have made 250m and sold their 3 top players, they will put a stupid price on him now which we can't pay. Or is this another mastersroke by Ineos?

Or we buy him now on a 6 year contract, and he snaps his leg. No surety in this market, laying the groundwork for potential future signings would be a more considered approach than panicking because we haven't signed enough players in the first week of August and overpaying by £20million for a player who would struggle to displace Shaw...with the knock on effect that this would (likely) be the end of our spending this summer.

He could snap his leg next year if we signed him then? Any signing could snap their leg? It's not panicking, we needed a lb, he is a good option we should be going for, that's the opposite of a panic signing. We can lay the groundwork for as many players a swe want, doesn't mean we will get any of them

We shouldn't overpay for him just because he might have a good season and cost more/have other teams in for him next season.
If we have a limited transfer pot available, Hall is overpriced and we can prioritise another signing while hopefully tapping him up for next summer, I hope we do that.

My general point is...if you look at our transfer history in the past 15 years...have we been burned more from overpaying for unsuitable/overpriced players...or missing out on future stars we stuck to our principles and valuation for?
 
If United plan on signing several players before the end of the window, it would make sense to save the most expensive transfer for last. Otherwise, every other selling club in the interim will raise the asking price on their players.

Assuming Hall the most expensive player we're targetting this summer (because of his age, nationality and parent club), I think it's plausible that United are going to try and complete all their other business before coming back to this. If we see any movement on it, it would be late in the window.

Ornstein is just recounting what he's been told, not necessarily what United really plan to do. Maybe that's copium, but I think it's also INEOS's modus operandi.

That’s the funny thing, this summer I’ve been somewhat switched off from it all compared to other years but it’s now getting to the beyond ridiculous point.

How is it? We’ve signed two players. There’s been plenty of windows where we’ve done almost nothing by the very end of the window, or at least the start of the season, especially previous World Cup years. I don’t really see that others have done a massive amount more than us? I would say we’re not even at the “ridiculous” stage never mind beyond that. We’re at the “been a while” “season starts soon and we need more hmm” stage.

If we don’t sign anybody else then we can probably say it’s completely ridiculous. Even then, if the two players we have signed turn out to be absolutely quality then that’s a good window. This career mode idea that we need to spunk on players in every position that we need to has rarely happened and where we have tried it has been a spectacular failure. We need to make the right signings - quality over quantity. I very much think we’ve done good business so far.

I think people are just getting FOMO watching other clubs completely spunking their wad already.
 
Newcastle saying they aren’t selling a player is their standard approach, the weren’t Bruno G not long ago. Doesn’t mean it isn’t true but no need to get carried away fixating on a negative update.

I just hope the alternative isn’t Robinson if it does turn out that Newcastle are unwilling to sell.

It's really just his opinion though. If you listen to it in the context of the actual clip it's not some grand revelation, but just more speculation on his part. He's not sharing some newly uncovered, first-hand information or leak.

United were told on multiple occasions that he wasn't for sale, the only thing that has changed is that Newcastle have a new coach who may feel differently

It’s nothing to do with what others have done or are doing and everything to do with how slow we’ve been to act. The rubbish fees we’ve received. The players we’ve missed out on. Everyone agreed going in to this window what we needed and thus far, we are miles away from getting what we need done.

And both have paid thru the nose for them, United can't afford to do that at present, and especially not for a young player who's played less than 100 senior games

We have lost Casemiro and signed 2 players. It has been a disappointing window so far and the PL kicks off in 16 days. Tielemans is a good signing and Santos has potential to be but that is nowhere near enough to bridge the class gap on those above us. It's a maintain your position window at best.

It's looking like we are heading to the bottom of the list in all positions and will probably end up with Berge/Adams and a budget signing LB.

Bruno threatened to quit and Tonali was for sale at 100m, which is what he went for.

Yeah that's definitely the big difference between those deals, also Guimaraes was willing to force move whereas you get feeling this guy won't rock the boat

Why wouldn't he though? With the sh*tshow happening at Newcastle a move to Manchester United, supposedly biggest club in the country, where he will receive bigger wages, more exposure and the chance to play Champions League football again, could easily make him push for a move. It's the sort of move that's transformative for any player's fortunes and it's not as if he'd be backup at United. The pitch shouldn't really be that hard to make.

People underestimate the bargaining power they have now that Gordon, Tonali and Guimaraes money secured. He also has three years left on his contract and will probably think he can get place back now Howe is gone. Many of us said this would happen if we waited too long and so it's proved.
 
We’ll probably go and sign a left-back we’ve not been linked with out of the blue if the Santos, Tielemans signings are anything to go by.
 
This is the issue when you wait it out...

If we really wanted Hall, act sooner, wasn't at the World Cup etc. Don't wait until they've sold Gordon, Tonali, Bruno.

Or, we've probably only just realised the need for a left back.

Assuming the club ever seriously made him a target.
Seems quite unlikely for the fee required, with so much surgery needed in midfield.

There are many sides to this, one being that the club does not want to spend 60-70m on a left back before addressing midfield as we’d likely be quoted much higher prices (as was the case with Mbeumo). It’s tricky when you don’t have a pile of money to burn.
