Lewis Hall

Maz is only a lb if you want to sit deep and defend, he offers nothing going forward as a lb. I at least would like to see us actually have some attacks from the wings now and then.

What is our actual transfer budget?

Hall(~65M) + another midfielder(~50M), gets us to ~150M net spend. Which is extremely reasonable for a club like us.

Because if we cant afford him, chances are our budget is closer to 100M net, than 150M. Which is very worrying.

You can’t lose something you didn't have. Until we successfully sold them, we didn’t have any money for them.
Hmm, whilst I agree in the obvious point of you not having the money until their sold. We obviously expected to move both on this summer and would have planned as such. It's obviously had an impact, because we expected to raise more than £10m in transfer sales that we've currently had.

No concrete links whatsoever with the player. I think it’s just wishful thinking from the Caf. United are interested in a lot of players and vice versa, doesn’t mean we are going to sign every single one of them though

If he is not interested, fine. But, if he is interested in a move to us, we should behave like a big club and go get him.

I don't think anyone knows.. every season we get reports from journalist saying we have 100/150m budget but we spend over 200m.

Lets not pretend anyone knows what the budget is.

The issue is that there is no leaks anymore, so everyone is getting frustrated, the journalists are getting frustrated.

Ornstein during the world cup said United will be the busiest...now he is saying he is surprised because of the work that needs done. So was it a guess that we will be the busiest or was he told by someone in the club?

They are all guessing, every journalist knows one thing... negativity drives engagement, they know how fans are feeling.

Did you not watch him at the world cup? He was outstanding in attack so he can do it.

International football is a lot slower then premier league football hence why certain footballers look like absolute world beaters for there respective nation but can’t kick snow off a rope in the league.

Morocco is a bit of a weird one. Amrabaat and Ounahi have both looked outstanding for them, but flattered to deceive at bigger clubs. Sometimes players levels just go up, playing in a big tournament, for their national team. There's enough evidence in the prem that Mazraoui isn't outstanding in attack.

This might be the most boring transfer thread of all time. 60 pages and cocks haven't been out one time.

We're starving as a fanbase.

It's weird you left it this late if a LB was one of your priorities. The Gordon sale should have been the red alert that something could be done if you went in fast.
Now they've sold half the squad and banked 250M+ they can make him stay.

I don't think it was, not a major one anyway. Too hinged on whether Rashford would stay or not, which is why we were being linked more with LW to begin with.

I also don't think that spending £60m+ on Hall is a great use of limited funds. He doesn't really improve the starting line up, just makes people feel less nervous about Shaw getting injured.

Agreed. By now Newcastle have sold off their best players so they can overhaul their squad under new management. They won’t need to sell anymore and will ratchet up the price on their existing players should any desperate last minute suitors emerge in the latter half of the window.

If there was or is any intention from us to buy (which would be wise, as he is an upgrade) we are as always too late. Forget it.
I already said in in another thread, we are again in this time wasting deadzone weeks of the window where we seem to just be frozen, not getting any transfer dealings done, only to panic mid August.

Spot on. I like the idea of us buying Hall given that Shaw is in his 30s, but feel it may be a more suitable move for next summer when Shaw is 32 and out of contract.

You could make that argument about almost every position though. Oh sure if Tielemans mainoo & santos are injured we got mount. If sesko is injured we have mbuemo & Raahford. But like in reality all these 3 positions need reinforcements. If shaw gets injured there is a serious drop in quality.

If he gets injured I think Carrick, Berrada, Wilcox, and Vivell will have seen Mazraoui's play at LB during the WC and come out of it convinced he's more than good enough to be a backup LB imo. That's part of the entire logic of not needing to spend £60 or more on yet another LB this summer.

Mount looks good in pre season so should we be content with midfield now? Rashford looked decent at Barcelona, are we ok now up front? You see my points

There’s still time for us to sign players but the guys in charge at the club should rightly be under huge pressure if they actually go with this.

I suspect Carrick feels that way about Mount as well. We have existing players in our squad who presently don't have clearly defined roles, but who are experienced enough to do a job in multiple roles. When he sees Mount, he probably sees an experienced player with a positive attitude who can back up Bruno, play in CM, and also play wide if needed as well. Similar versatility with Mazraoui as well since he can play both FB roles and even fill in at CB if needed. That's the sort of depth and versatility we will need during a 55 or more fixture season.

Newcastle and most of their fanbase acting like Lewis Hall is prime Roberto Carlos, he’s not!

He is a very good premier league proven attacking left back who is ok defensively, he is worth £60-65m purely based on his age and the fact that his current contract is only £45,000 per week. If United want to continue as a big club, a player like Lewis Hall should be an easy transfer to do for the Mighty Man United.

Omar Berada should call Newcastle’s CEO, and tell Newcastle we want Lewis Hall, tell them he wants to join United, if they say £75m say that’s not happening we will offer you £58m+ £7m in achievable bonuses and have offered him a wage that is 3 times his current salary.

Newcastle then need to make a decision either sell the player or give him a new £140-150k per week contract which they won’t do!

The one thing about Shaw is that he doesn't rely on pace and so even at 32, he should still be capable of playing at the same level as now.

That's true for most clubs and transfers though. Arsenal are paying £75m for a soon to be 29 year old. City paid £116m for Anderson and Chelsea £117m for Rogers with obvious dodgy PSR shenanigans going on between them and Villa; all 3 of those clubs either having investigations going on and/or having paid fines for said dodgy financial stuff.
It was also true last summer. And the summer before that.

I've really rated Shaw and feel at times he has been harshly spoken about, but if we signed Hall I would be starting him over current Shaw any day of the week

Mainoo played 90 minutes every game in that role since Carrick took over as the deepest midfielder. His defending improved loads and it's the way he's developing under Carrick.
I am not sure what you are talking about. Mainoo was playing alongside Casemiro, who albeit old, is a world-class DMF.

Mainoo was playing #8, not #6 with Case.

Casemiro was the one barging into the box regularly while Mainoo was clearly picking up the ball off the center backs and not really pushing forward. Rewatch any of the last like... 10 matches?

And he's looked poor there for us. He also didn't look that great going forward there apart from a couple of flashes against Brazil. International football is not a good barometer for the Premier League.

Regardless, he is our right back cover.

Big clubs with lots of matches have had 2 players for each position for ages.

Having 3 players for 2 positions when 2 of them aren't natural there and the only one who is has a track record of not staying fit is a hideous idea.
You could also argue that Yoro is right back cover as well, he's been used there in pre-season

100%

It would have been transformational for us to have signed Lewis Hall.

I believe it so strongly that I would have GLADLY paid as much as 80-85M for him, even though most people may think that is too much

Alas, if we wanted to sign Hall we had to go for him as soon as the transfer window opened, before Newcastle sold ton of players for big money and before Eddie Howe left.

We have zero chance now and the price is much higher, than it would have been, because they dont need to sell. Even Ornstein said it wont happen. Doesnt get more credible than him

I kind of agree. Shaw was a bigger talent in my opinion. Can see the worth of overpaying for hall, but not greatly and it’s not worth a saga that runs to the end of the window. Needs to happen now or move on.

Shaw himself no longer contributed much to the attack and had deteriorated quite significantly in building the play out from the back last season. He did have some fantastic matches where he was able to just focus on defending, but we need more than that in most games.

Unless he is able to wind back the clock and perform like he did 3+ years ago (which I would love, but unfortunately I doubt it), we don't just need cover for Shaw. We should be looking for someone who can come in and hopefully overtake Shaw in the pecking order as the season goes on, with Shaw then being the cover for the remainder of the season (and perhaps the preferred option against the top teams where he can focus on defending).

If we were interested, we should've bought him at the beginning of the window. Unfortunately, the financial losses of not being able to move Rashford and Ugarte on would've probably forced us into a more pragmatic spending posture this window.

He would probably be third choice at RB. When asked about it, he seemed to suggest he preferred CB.
I'm sure he does prefer CB but he hasn't done as well there as expected so far, so he's probably third choice there behind Maguire and Heaven, I can see him being a dual backup this season
