Newcastle wouldn't have to do either of those.. They have him signed to a contract for a few years yet. They don't need to sell or offer him a new contract.

If they are to sell then it will be on their terms. You can't just tell them "no, we will only pay £xx" and expect them to fold
We are offering a world record fee for full back if £60+£5m that’s more than Hakimi or Nuno Mendes, we can simply move on as well and we should, the way Newcastle are imploding he could be playing championship football next season with an unproven PL manager!

There’s nothing at all to indicate we are after Hall at all.

Of course a good % of us would want him, but it’s nothing more than complete conjecture from fans.

It’s not - some of the more reliable sources have said we’re definitely interested in him but it’s a very hard deal to do.

Spot on. I like the idea of us buying Hall given that Shaw is in his 30s, but feel it may be a more suitable move for next summer when Shaw is 32 and out of contract.
There is such a thing as succession planning. Bring in the next guy and let him get acclimatised before Shaw has completely declined or leaves. It's going to be a squad game with Champions League back next season, so we need an additional option in that position to rotate with Shaw, at a minimum.

We should be working on the premise of having at least two players per position going into next season.

Only if you chose to ignore all the reports from pretty much every journalist connected with United.

Proclaiming Mitten, Whitwell, Stone etc. are all pulling this from their collective a**es is quite the take.
did they have the lowdown on Santos and Tielemans?

did they have the lowdown on Santos and Tielemans?
Our interest in Santos was fairly well reported prior to signing him, it just materialised quickly when it became clear Chelsea were prepared to sell. A transfer for Hall would probably gather pace at a similar rate if we got those same indications from Newcastle.

Tielemans was a bolt from the blue but that was due to a release clause which nobody seemingly knew anything about. It's not really a typical transfer.

Newcastle are now briefing that Hall is untouchable so I expect we will wrap this up by the weekend.

I’m all for this signing but in no way should we be paying 70 million for him, that would be absurd.

But it wasn't Ornstein tweeted our interest on 5th and fee agreed 3 days later. Nobody has lowdown before that Orny tweet which what I think people are getting at.

It doesn't make much sense to go for him now and overpay. That would be extremely disappointing and very much reminiscent of buying Fellaini after his clause expired or Antony towards the end of transfer window. Would reek of incompetence.

Having said that we definitely need LB cover (or starting)

Only explanation that shows the recruitment team in good light is that there was a plan for a LB that didn't come through. Easy to make up some shit but harder to make fans believe it.

I don't think it was, not a major one anyway. Too hinged on whether Rashford would stay or not, which is why we were being linked more with LW to begin with.

I also don't think that spending £60m+ on Hall is a great use of limited funds. He doesn't really improve the starting line up, just makes people feel less nervous about Shaw getting injured.

I think he would improve our starting line up. As much as I like Shaw and how technically sound he is, he no longer offers the overlap threat he used to. He hesitates to commit himself forward with runs because he doesn’t have the legs to get up and down all game anymore, and that really hinders our attacking threat down our whole left side. Having an overlap available outside of Cunha would help unlock the best of him, allowing him to drift inside as he has a tendency to do.

We’d be interested in Santos for a while though. We’d enquired about him last summer when we were doing the Garnacho deal and there was more talk of our interest over the season.

It's not like he's been at the WC, we could have had this wrapped up weeks ago, and at £70/80m it would have been us sorted for the next decade at LB, and our homegrown quota benefits as side quest xp. If he was available we should have been all over it before they sold their best players. I can't see his wages being huge and causing any issues, or his relationship with Howe. I hate the fact the window is still running when the season starts.

We rely on Mount as third midfielder we deserve what happens when he breaks down and no DM cover

Did no one watch us under Ten Hag when Mount played in central midfield? We were torn apart as teams went straight through our midfield. I can’t believe Carrick is going to try it again. And thats if Mount can even stay fit.

Not that I’m supportive of any reliance on Mount, wasn’t ETH using he and Bruno both in advanced roles whilst Casemiro “held the fort”.

A signing only he saw, and a system only he saw.

I’m not a fan of Mount in midfield either. But to be fair that was completely different tactics under ETH. That’s why we got torn apart. Carrick sets us up a lot more compact.

Bruno will have to do his fair share of defensive work for it to work

ETH wasn't playing Mount in CM. We were effectively playing one midfielder (Casemiro) all by himself, then pushing both Bruno and the third one (whether it was Mount, McTominay, Mainoo or Eriksen) right up the field into the attack. Mainoo and Eriksen tended to help Casemiro a little more than the other two, but he was still constantly left all by himself in there.

On top of that, not only were our attacking players pushing up quite high, but our defence was dropping very deep which created the huge amount of space in the middle of the field with only one player (an aging Casemiro) trying to cover it all. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there was no other player in the history of the PL that was asked to single-handedly cover as much space as Casemiro was expected to that season. So I don't think anything can really be taken from that period when it comes to Mount's suitability for the actual CM role. He wasn't really playing that position, and the entire structure of the team was fundamentally broken.

Pay the 70 and get done with it. If our board wasn't brainless, they would have gone for him at a much lower price, but even at 70m, you get a great LB for the next 7-8 years
Ah, the good ol’ “pay whatever it takes and get it done with”, sure takes me back to the Sancho summers, great times, worked out great.
You’d hope we’re past the stage of desperately getting rinsed left, right and center in the market.

Nah, Hall isn’t nowhere near a 70m player, its ridiculous.
I swear, the fullback position got incredibly overrated these last couple of years due to several fantastic footballers who happen to play in that position.
Hall isn’t Mendes, or Marcelo, or Kyle Walker, or Alaba, or Davies or Hakimi for crying out loud, he isn’t as good as Cucurella.
Dumfries just cost Real Madrid 20m euros and he’s much better than Hall.
What’s Hall’s edge? What is it that makes him a 70m player in your eyes?
English, young, could cement the LB spot for a decade ain’t good enough.

Hell, he’s not even as impressive as 18 years old Shaw was at Southampton and he’s not been all that for us, either.
If we fork out 70m on a fullback he’s better be a world class defender or a world class attacking full back, Hall is neither.

Only way I see this deal happening is if Hall asks to leave. Newcastle have earned enough this window and with Howe gone (who at the end preferred Burn), will be a very difficult deal to do otherwise.

Getting rinsed once in a while like every other club out there, or walk away from every deal, leave yourself desperately short again and risk missing out on the CL lifeline for the umpteenth time. Pick your poison. As it stands we're not prepared for this season and the fact that we're even debating whether or not overpay and plunge for one of the last remaining promising targets, tells you everything you need to know about the club's decisiveness and competence this summer. It's a bad window so far, even if we count Santos and Tielemans as positive additions.

We can’t afford to get rinsed anymore.
I think we’ve had a good window so far and there’s still plenty of time to it, and I’m positive we will get another player in, or two.
I personally never thought we could lend a player of Tielemans’ quality for 35m and we did, that’s cracking value, I would have never thought that he’d even be available.

Hall doesn’t have a defined edge for him to be even in the conversation for that type of money.
I personally don’t think he’s particularly great but Spence is clearly available and for a lot less money, at least Spence has got an edge, an attribute that makes him stand out with what he can bring to the team, he’s absolutely rapid.
If you’re desperate for an English fullback, then why not him?
I don’t want the club to spend these sums on players who are good or decent all rounders, you can probably find these types of players for 15m out of East Europe or South America.
70m is a lot of money, can he own his flank like Hakimi does? Can he pass like Trent? Can he defend one on ones like Kyle Walker?

Its a No from me.

We have been ‘rinsed’ on most transfer since fergie left.

I’m with the club on taking a stand and making us sustainable. We’ve not turned a profit in nearly a decade.

It’s do want Hall. But also (and it’s unfortunate that we have had so much mismanagement over the past decade), we do need to look at the bigger picture. He’s not the only left back out there.

We can agree to disagree then. I think Hall's a fantastic young player with a high ceiling. Just watch his performance last season against Yamal and you get the reason why he's highly rated. He might not be at Hakimi's or Mendes level yet, but at 21 he has all the time in the world to go up another level or two. If you'd rather have Spence, then that's your prerogative of course.

Hall is supposedly the club's "dream" target at left-back. That's not me saying it, but several decently connected journalists out there. You'd think, if the club rates him so highly, then paying a bit more to get your preferred target, would make sense. Especially for a position, for which we're currently relying on Shaw of all people to remain fit. Getting a player here should've been a priority from the very start of the window. Not just barely a "nice-to-have".

And don't worry about profit. Turning a profit at United will eventually most likely just get gobbled up as dividends by our not so benevolent owners anyway.

I still don't know how this works if you buy them. Is it a 20% discount?!

Not sure to be honest, but I would imagine it would work like a 20% discount if we were the buyers. I hope so anyway

I would also prefer to keep the powder dry for when a real game changer becomes available. I really like Hall but spending seventy million would be a waste of resources. We actually have a decent squad overall. We need to spend, but only on clear upgrades, rather than for the sake of it.

If rashford stays than hall is a luxury signing as Dorgu will drop in the LB role and shaw/amass would be the cover. The big issue is CM. We have just one no 6

They'd just up the RRP by 20% before adding the discount like those online stores where everything is always on offer

I'd rather have Dorgu on the left wing than Rashford. So does Carrick for all we know.

So Rashford staying shouldn't impact our pursuit of a left-back whatsoever. At least if we're serious about improving, instead of shuffling people around to accommodate a player, who barely wants to be here in the first place.

I'd rather be on a cruise drinking Guinness and eating near the pool but here we are. The club seems running on fumes which means we can only spend on the strictly necessary. We need another no 6. We don't need another LB

Opinions I guess. I'd rather not bet our season on Shaw staying fit and relying on a player, who has barely played at left-back in his career.

But to even have this debate is futile. In no scenario should it be an either-or.

But we won't be betting on shaw at all. He'll be cover to Dorgu. Then there's mazraoui and dalot who can both play there. On the other hand we've got just 1 no 6, a kid with huge potential who was a bench player at 10th place Chelsea

In an ideal world we get hall but we are skint. If we can only buy 1 player then that must be a no 6
