It’s all good having pace and running all day but when it’s being used by a headless chicken it’s not good in the context of being a PL level left back, Diouf is fecking awful and I’d honestly have Amass ahead of him every single time.
Probably. The difficult call the board have to work out is whether to go all out for Hall now, keep their powder dry for him next season, go for another LB like Diouf now or to keep Amass now and let him prove he’s one for the future.

I think you're underselling him badly. Sure, he's raw, and we will not be in for him, but he's got potential. Let's seeIdeally we could get a Seys, Salinas (if not Atletico bound) or Raum to backup Shaw. Then if Luke leaves at end of season go back for this guy, although will he end up just signing new deal.
I don't think the Hall situation is dead & buried, but it would entirely depend on the player being vocal on handing in a transfer request, and agitating for the move to happen, and United being willing to pay a huge fee.

I think only the last one needs to happen to be honest. I don't think it's out of the question we'll pay a big fee for a player that could be the mainstay of our defence for the next decade. It will just depend how high we rate him.

I think the player wants to come here but unfortunately for him we are not a club anymore with the clout like Liverpool or Arsenal to get this one done even with resistance from Newcastle.

He's played <20% of his professional matches as an LB, the rest is as a RB. Most of those were back in the 2021/22 season too. This guy is very firmly a right back, who can put in a shift on left back if there is no one else.
In other words, this has no bearing on Lewis Hall's destiny whatsoever (sadly)
End of last Summer we went in for Baleba at £60-£70m, and in January for Semenyo. We signed neither, so where has that money gone? Added into this Summer kitty?
It can be argued that our net spend this window is around £20m so far, and how would we have paid for Tchoumeni if he had suddenly became available?

I don't think it's gone anywhere, per se. Rashford coming back is the same as adding a new signing, which we didn't think would be the case. I don't know how much we're planning to scale back with this new stadium to pay for and the intention maybe have been to drastically lower the squad cost this summer. I know we recently had to refinance, which would have been at a higher rate, so it's really hard to tell where we stand.
I don't doubt there's probably about £80m to spend, based off our previous summers net spend, but we also probably want more than 2 players if possible. £80m doesn't seem to get you as far as they'd hoped, I imagine.
We never had that money. Last summer we agreed to take on more debt to get a few key players in. We could still take on more debt now if we wanted to, but you can’t load on debt forever, at some point we need to go the other way. Seems we’ve chosen this summer to do some of that.
Having money doesn't mean you spend it...
This is what Manutd have always done, spent for players that have not been worth it.
Everyone was going crazy when we didn't spend big for Tonali, Anderson and Fernandez, instead got Santos and Tielemans.
It would be spent if the right player is available, someone like Tchouameni, we would have spent the money.
I am perfectly happy not spending on players like Tonali, Anderson and Fernandez if we can get similar quality for less.

Journo's clearly know jack all about what we're doing this summer. There was absolutely zero chatter about any of the players we've acquired prior to basically breaking the news. That's a silver lining for me. Means the guys upstairs have their plan and aren't telling anyone about it
I expect to see Hall at OT, new era at Newcastle and he won't want to keep players who are unsettled.
Or Newcastle have seen enough players leave, have the money and would demand too much. Hence making Hall the face of the future. Who knows but glad we are looking at alternative options

That's like saying we're looking to sell Fernandes because we bought Tielemans. Makes no sense.
Did we ever actually bid for Baleba or Semenyo? It's easy to say we were prepared to spend money on them when we never actually came anywhere close to spending said money. Likewise saying you want Tchouameni is plenty different to actually paying the numbers necessary to make that happen.
Everything we've done this summer from walking away from pursuits of Anderson and Tonali, getting outcompeted by Spurs on Fernandes, refusing to test Newcastle's resolve by putting in an actual bid for Lewis Hall, sitting here 2 and a half months into the window with just a £30m net spend - it's very hard to make the case from the outside that this is a club with a big budget.
There's always the chance we're just pathetically slow to get things done and not actually broke, but that's almost equally annoying.

This Hall situation is going be more reminiscent of the Elliot Anderson situation. United's mouthpiece journos maintaining for weeks that "United remain interested in Elliot Anderson" when it was obvious he was going to City and United had no interest in paying the fee needed to sign him.
Either we just let the Lewis Hall rumours simmer for another couple weeks before we sign a B tier option instead for cheap, or we make failed bids to Newcastle who have no interest in selling another first 11 player in the final couple of weeks of the window as they don't want to get relegated and have no time to get a replacement, and then we move on to the B tier option.
