Lewis Hall

I don’t think we will buy him for more next summer. £60-65m or we will have identified someone else.

We clearly have not had a plan for left back and hope we can muddle through.
Well his price aint coming down. Market will be even worse next year, and he will have another good year under his belt. His value will only rise. He's someone who's clearly out of our price range, we should have identified someone this year and made a move.

Yep. Muddle thru from here.

Shaw, Dorgu, Maz.

Dalot, Yoro, Maz.

CD, I’m more worried about. Zero cohesion. No stability yet we have flexibility there. Depends on oppo but between Harry, MDL, and Licha we should have half decent cover but with any three never getting more than a couple of games together, is it any wonder they don’t gel? Yoro + Heaven ? Not really had the best circs to blend in

Another striker and some cohesion, settled XI …

What other club concentrates on one area of the pitch and moves onto a different area each season?
Nobody knows if it's something that we are deliberately doing or whether it's just because of how things have gone in terms of what we most need combined with the contract situation of our players.

Last season we had to focus on our attack as what we had was absolutely atrocious, by far the worst we've had in PL history and probably for a long time before that and would have done nothing but keep us near a relegation battle if we didn't completely rebuild it. While our midfield and defence had their weaknesses it was nowhere near as bad as our attack. Despite that, because of the player's ages we had teams willing to take a chance on some of them and give us a decent amount of money which we were able to put towards the rebuild. So focusing on the attack both bought in the most funds in sales while also making the biggest improvement on the field.

This season due to Casemiro being out of contract and Ugarte having proven he wasn't an option (and then getting the injury), midfield is clearly the huge priority. I certainly would have liked to have get at least one defender in as well (especially LB), but that could only happen if we still had funds left over after the midfield rebuild.

Next season Maguire and Shaw are out of contract and also one year older, Martinez is actually out of contract as well although there is a +1 we will likely take, we'll have a better idea if De Ligt is able to recover from his injury, and also whether Yoro or Heaven look like they are getting near the point of staking a claim for a starting role. So our current squad make-up naturally points to a heavy focus on defence next season.

After that hopefully we'll start spreading things around much more.

I did mention about the sales we were able to make with our attackers last season, but it also goes the other way. Unless you are happy to sell Mainoo, Yoro, Heaven or Bruno, we didn't have much in the way of sellable assets in midfield and defence. I'm sure we could have sold Mazraoui for a bit, but nothing major. Dalot is perhaps the only real option where we probably could have sold for a decent amount to put back into the squad, so an argument could be had that we should have taken that option. But there's also a reason why he's the only one we could have got decent money for, and that's because he's the hardest one to replace. Otherwise, we're basically stuck with the others until their contracts run out or they prove they have recovered properly from injury.

What I don't quite understand about putting all the eggs in the Hall basket, is what's to stop Newcastle next summer setting a price we don't want to pay and holding firm the whole window?

A year is a long time in football. They’ll be other options, so much can happen. He could have an amazing season, or an awful one. I don’t think he’s the sort of talent worth waiting a year for in the hopes it’s easier next year honestly. But what do I know.

I don't think they think it will be any easier per se, they'll just have a bigger budget - hopefully. There are lots of factors that could affect it, from our own performances this year, to Hall's, Newcastles and their valuation and budget.

Then you have your list and move on, or wait for Hall to push for the move

Nothing.

But it is not a resale of a used TV. Its an employee, who will most likely have some sort of non-binding agreement nd they would generlly have the desire to get the most out of a sale but also not keep a player who would feel some sort of betrayal.

A lot of this can go wrong. Of course. But its not the first player whos leaving who you'd keep if you could choose yourself.

Delap is an excellent example of where we go wrong. If we had signed him last year and he had that crap season with us, we wouldn't have sold him this summer, we still be hoping he turned the corner while tanking his value. Chelsea didn't like what they saw, and got rid ASAP

When they are buying £300mil + each summer, they can afford to do that. They bought Delap and Pedro last summer.

Which is fine, but not sure why that wasn't possible this window. Even if we wait for him next summer, you can't prepare all summer without a proper LB. Unless we actually think Shaw will still be here?
Nothing.

There's no incentive for Newcastle to bring the price down for our benefit though, they run their club in their best interests. This is also assuming absolutely no one else will be interested. We learned that the hard way with Fernandes.

Yeah taking a very stupid gamble doing that

I’ve no doubt we aren’t doing it on purpose. We are doing it, because we aren’t effectively planning.

Much like Baleba and we revisit this next year, this kid better be worth it for the year plus long links with him
I think he's worth it. I also think we will be priced out of a move next summer, we will then sign maatson or someone like that and say he was always our plan

We're having to make our current plan based on the issues that our old regime left us. We can't fix everything at once so have to prioritise. Attack (and keeper) absolutely HAD to be the priority last season. Midfield absolutely HAD to the be priority this season. If we had the money available to do the priority plus extra then that'd be great, but that's a different problem and is likely where we needed sales.

We could have at least loaned a LB for the season

I agree but we have all these issues and lack of funds why are we so intent of signing someone who will probably cost 70m or more.

That’s probably something like 50-70 percent of the net spend for next summer going on one player, then are they renewing Shaw for another year or having to spend even more on another LB for the squad. It’s also 50-50 we’ll be on the Champions League next summer and no guarantee we get a free run so the planning doesn’t fill you with confidence.

It’s really difficult to see how they ever sort the squad out properly as they can never buy enough players and solve enough problems.

Its so weird seeing people discussing transfers as if only United have an active role in it. There's at least three and most times more parties with active roles in any transfer.

Nothing, which is why the whole situation is fecking stupid. I genuinely think INEOS have a terrible idea of market values and have sort of gotten lucky so far on the deals we have done, because their negotiating tactics fecking suck.

I guess nothing. But would it have been better to go for Hall and not buy Baleba this summer? Im not sure that's a better priority.

Who though? We tried Balde but Barca wanted cash and he didn't seem to want to leave Spain either.

Clubs don't just loan out good players. Even if they want rid, they'll want some kind of obligation to buy or a big loan fee if not.

Definitely not, probably better to get Hall rather than buy Santos to be honest. Not that Santos is a bad buy at all, but I think LB is more pressing.

We'd still be light on midfield the.

Hall would have cost more than Santos. They decided to spend the money on Baleba instead of Hall.

We can argue whether it was the right decision, but that's what they decided.

We wouldn't be "light", but we wouldn't be 2 deep on one position. I'm not sure you can use the argument we'd be light somewhere when we have 1 LB who has only ever stayed fit for a season, once.

Of course, but not by a huge amount. I'm sure we could have stretched.

I know, it's just my opinion.

Is there no chance of dipping into next years transfer budget and get Hall like now? He could be the difference between a really successful season or not

Mainoo, Tielemans, could even drop Bruno in some games. I think loaning a midfielder is easier than loaning a LB. Guess we’ll have to wait till next year to go all out on defence. We did an attack rebuild last year. Midfield this year so defence next. We’ve done it the complete opposite way around.

We already did that last summer with Sesko, its part of the reason our transfer budget this summer isn't that big.

The year before, the club signed Yoro, Heaven, De Ligt and Mazraoui, they are all still at the club. The club started with the defence.

If Hall is to come it will need to be this year. Next year he'll be even more expensive and have more eyes on him.

I think the Ineos transfer business has generally been very good, but i think this is one of those scenarios where if you want the quality to get to the very top sometimes you just need to pay and be done with it. Even Arsenal have eventually realised this. I can see Chelsea , Arsenal , Liverpool and City all looking at LB next season.

City and Arsenal are fine at left back. But yes if Kerkez doesn’t come good then Liverpool. Chelsea have like 100 players so they should be fine too.

Yeah, I would say at least half of them are certain to need a new LB. Chelsea also have some sort sell on, so they're also able to ramp up the price and win either way.

Whitwell saying we valued him at £50m, which as I've said previously, is the right valuation for him. It also mentioned we felt that CL football being on offer would've appealed to him.

We now have backed ourselves into a corner, as I feel there will be a few clubs after him next summer and our valuation of £50m will be surpassed.
