Bit more info to @pascell’s post

Between Tielemans and Baleba joining, United considered signing an outright LB: Hall.

Mount was performing well in pre-season, and staff including Carrick felt Hall might be needed more, in providing competition for Shaw, than another midfielder.

Man United looked at a deal around the £50M mark for Hall and at that point believed a move to Old Trafford, and Champions League football, would have held appeal to him.

But the pursuit significantly slowed down about 3 weeks before deadline when Omar Berrada placed a call to Newcastle United chief executive David Hopkinson to directly address the matter at the top level and was told Hall was not for sale. The club essentially accepted this stance.

Man United did not move to sign another left-back of major profile, to keep the path clear for Hall in future. The situation is expected to be revisited next summer at the latest.

 
Just seems so eh. The idea that anyone at the club seriously considered Mount a long term proper solution in midfield is truly terrifying. There will be children at school who could have predicted he’d probably not even make it out of pre season without getting injured.

Could kind of accept that if we’re revisiting it in January, but either way we should’ve recruited back up for LB.
 
Hope we can sign him next summer. It's been obvious since late July it wasn't happening this summer so was odd that people were still hoping we'd go for him now.

Apparently, we thought we'd get him for about £45m including add ons, which seems to be totally out of touch with the reality of the market that we are operating in.
As per usual, we were too "calm & relaxed" about the situation, and were too slow to act.
If we had gone for Hall early, just maybe we might have got him, but to leave it until after Newcastle had already made three big money sales, and this late in the window, was naive at best.

The problem is that we only signed Baleba this summer because he had a shite season with Brighton. If he'd had another season like the one before he'd have been way out of our price range and probably now at Chelsea, City or Liverpool. So really, to be in with a chance of signing Hall next season we're hoping he has a shite year, which does not feel like much of a strategy.
 
So are we gonna sign two LBs next summer?

Or are we extending Shaw's contract/converting Dorgu into a LB? Much more likely isnt it

If we do go back in for him we're going to be about 30m apart in valuations, it will be an Anderson or Fernandes all over again.

So @MaMa given red was right that we are planning to go for him next year, now, instead. He took some serious flack for that stance

No one was doubting we would try next year, people said it was a poor sttagety as anything could happen. That says we value him at 50m, not a chance we get him for close to that next year. Whenever the window closes, we immediately get an article about next year. It's pr

We thought M.Fernandes would cost 50M. Spurs came in and offered 85M. WHU told our penny pinching asses to feck off.

I see the L.Hall scenario turning out similarly. Club would be wise to have backups and PR excuses ready for next summer

People said we needed a lb now, they're will be no guarantees we could get Hall next year. He kept saying it could be agreed behind the scenes, not grasping it can easily fall through while leaving us short this year

I think someone paying £85m for a player who should be £50m doesn't need PR excuses. Its acceptable to miss out..

The article by Whitwell suggests they were prepared to meet the asking price but Spurs offered more guaranteed and a higher wage for Fernandes. It’s ok if he proves to be a top player right away but paying a 21 year old Bruno money would be quite unwise.

They repeatedly told him there was no plan to go back for Hall next year. Which is all I said.
 
Nothing about that update gives me any hope we'll sign him next summer. £50M again, seems ridiculously out of touch.

We will end up being about 30m out of touch, then say he was overpriced and not our top target before moving on to Ian maatsen who we will say was actually always our number 1 target and far better value

It's there in black and white (pun intended) As I may have mentioned before, he's a left back! £50m is perfectly resaonable. Kerkez was seen as the best left back in the league a year ago and went for £40m.

A left back with two years left on their contract isn't going for more than £50m!

The whole reason City got Anderson was because they started talks with him in November/December last year.

That article also says Anderson was our number one target this summer, which people gaslit us to believe he wasn't. I'm sure the same will happen.

Let's revisit this in the summer. I think you're wrong, there will be other clubs interested next year and blow 50m out of the water and we will move on to cheaper options

We got Baleba because he was crap this year and had zero competition in signing him. If Hall is crap this year then yes we will get him

We valued him at that this summer though. Again, is no one one else going to be interested in him? Hall is English and homegrown, he'll have a bigger premium than Kerkez.

We'll see, I think once again, our valuation is going to be miles off.

We got Baleba because we wanted him last year and he wanted to come here. It makes a big difference to make people feel wanted.

Do you want us to pay £30m more for a player than we value them at for the vanity of 'securing our first choice'?

Unless a player is absolutely essential. A complete goalscoring or creative beast who takes you to challenging I'm ok with sensible transfers and moving on to other targets when deals aren't representing reasonable value, ta

My point isn't what we should or shouldn't pay, it's I don't think we meet the price he goes for

His form could be related to drop in price, as could the shorter contract, as well as a year or more of the player making it clear he wanted to leave. It’s most likely a combination of factors rather than just ‘he’s shit now’.

The main problem is that people don't actually listen or pay attention to what the club are telling us.

There have been multiple articles about the strategy the club is pursuing, it's almost identical to the one that Liverpool pursued under Klopp.

Most people think its still the Ed Woodward days where its ok to pay whatever a selling club asks for no matter how ridiculous the price is!

If we are following the Liverpool strategy under Klopp we can look forward to 2 World record signings coming in then.
We will also need to get rid of Carrick for the best manager in the World and hope sesko becomes one of the best forwards on the planet
