Makes 0 sense to me. The club have somehow convinced some fans that you can only fix one area of a team at a time. We should have done both. Limited budget? Fine, don’t buy Santos and buy Hall instead. Either way they made the wrong call and I really, really hope it doesn’t come back to bit us in the butt. It likely will though.
I remember people complaining the same last season with 3 attackers.

We finished third.

He will be our top target next season but much like Anderson, it could be a situation where we are priced out of a move if we have competition elsewhere. I can see the scousers being competition for him next season and they’ve readily shown they’re prepared to pay stupid fees and wages recently.

You ommitted this line from the same Athletic article:

"After selling Anthony Gordon, Tonali and Guimaraes, Newcastle would not countenance losing another key player, given rising fan sentiment, nor did they need to financially. Had United tried earlier, things may have been different, but at that stage they were still manoeuvring through midfielders."
Source

So, this very much could have and should have been done earlier in the window. Why did we wait until 3 weeks before the deadline to contact Newcastle again? Complete negligence.

Gordon and Tonali wanted out last season so were always going.

So if I go into a test without studying and somehow get a B, should I repeat that for all future tests? That’s very sound logic.

I suppose this again highlights concerns about if we're not prepared to do the same we might fall behind

That's not the same equivalence though. Last season we purchased 3 players so we didn't not study. We've just bought 3 players so we've studied the same amount as last year. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming exams are going to be harder, though.

I'm bored of this analogy already.

They have just spent £40m on Kerkez, you think they are going to relegate him to backup?

Agree, it's quite a ridiculous stance. Like buying a house and wanting to sort one floor at a time but you leave the leaking roof until last.

If you compared getting three players integral to our finish to not studying it sounds like you've made a bit of a mess there.

The leaking roof in this analogy is very apt, literally haha.

we finished third because we sacked the coach we bought those players for, Bruno had an historic season and Casemiro scored a ton of goals. We didn’t finish third because we ignored the midfield last year. I’m not the one making the mess here.

As if he would be cheaper next summer. Most likely there will be a bidding war and we lose out.

Yeah and our defence conceded 1.06 goals a game but don't let that get in the way of making your point.

On the other hand we will probably prioritize defense next summer and he will be our #1 target. I don't think money will be the issue then as it was in the first two INEOS years since the financial situation will be much more stable off the back of two CL qualifications and the removal of most of the old ten Hag/Amorim era bomb squad. Therefore it shouldn't be an issue to spend big on Hall if necessary.

We all need to cross our fingers for champions league football qualification, this season. I reckon we’ll do it.

Remains to be seen but we will need 2 LBs, a CB, potentially a RB. That's 4 players, and we need top class starters. In addition to another striker, I doubt we have that much money to spend as we hardly will have an expensive sale

Ok my bad .
I wasn't clear. But the Carrick stint is a pivotal change because it was back to a comfortable system for us to play against teams and a better barometer of how competent we were in defence.

I can see a LB and CB for sure since I could see them extending Shaw a year if he performs well this season. If we then buy Hall and keep Shaw as backup, I think that would be a good outcome. Can't see us buying a RB since Dalot and Maz still have a year to go in 2027 and I can see them renewing Dalot.

"He'll be our number #1 priority next year"

Doesnt really mean anything tbh. Anderson and Fernandes were our big priorities this summer.

Considering a 100-150M budget next summer, and no major outgoings, I struggle to see how you spend half your budget on just 1 player when we need 4+(RB, CB, LB, FW)

A year ago, the players on our radar were still Baleba and Wharton - so I wouldn't put Anderson and Fernandes (who only emerged a few months ago) into that bucket.

It's proven again and again, PL is littered with teams with deep pockets that our owners can't compete with. Those "bomb squad" won't fetch that much, as it's been proven we're pretty bad at selling players at very good price.

With our owners, spending BIG on a player will always be an issue.

To an extent yes given we're not an oil club. But there are a few reasons I think we will steadily ramp up our transfer fees to the £100 range. The first is that we will have stabilized the bleeding from the Woodward/Arnold/Murtagh eras and will be in a better position to spend more as a result. Second, we will have the benefit of multiple CL seasons and the money that comes in from European qualification. The third is a fundamental realization that the market has changed and clubs that are unwilling to spend more are tacitly gifting their opponents the advantage of access to better players.

Hopefully he falls out with Jassler and we get him January, maybe Shaw's legs will hold up that long

The budget should be easier next summer we will hopefully be back in the CL again after again hopefully a decent CL campaign, part of the issue this year is whilst we forecast a better income due to CL it is not paid up front, so this window what we actually had to spend was based on no CL in reality

I wish i share your optimism. But unless i see some more prove, It's hard to believe it.

We'll get him next season like we got Anderson this summer after we briefed at end of January window, how we are saving the powder for summer... oh wait. Unless Hall forgets to play football and has a stinker of a season like Baleba, there is a zero sum chance we get him. Deluded folks in here are conveniently forgetting that none of the signings we made this summer had any sort of competition, they were straightforward deals as briefed by the board too. Anytime, there was a bidding war, we conveniently walked out.

Insanity that people in here not only defend this window but are conveniently buying the spiel of "we'll get him next summer", which is exactly why the club has briefed a day after closing of window on how we'll go back for him to appease the fans. This fanbase deserves everything which is happening, there are absolutely no standards or any semblance of sense or logic because you have to be deluded to buy the guff Utd journos are peddling today.

This is all based on continuously qualifying for the Champions League. Which is absolutely not a given this season. We have far too many weaknesses and just a couple of unfortunately timed injuries could lead to us missing out. The defense in particular is in a extremely dubious place and not just at left-back.

And for all the crap Woodward etc. have been rightfully getting over the years, the current people in charge aren't very good either. At the latest after this summer we can firmly chuck this best-in-class moniker right into the bin. They're are anything but.

Yes, its not a given for any club since all of them still have to actually perform. But the fact that we finished with the best record in the league once Carrick joined is a pretty good indicator that we should be on course to make the CL again this year.

It seems to have been forgotten we still had a huge amount owed on previous transfers that had to be paid this summer

No guarantee we qualify for the CL next season when clubs around us have strengthened their squads. Feel like we missed the chance to sign him. Not many top quality LBs around in the game, young and English. Lots of reasons why other clubs will be in for him next Summer.

Surely no one can think we’ll get Hall next season - they’ll probably want at least £70m and there’s no way this ownership is paying that for a full back.

There is no comparison to Baleba this year - he’s coming off a poor season and walk have crawled from Brighton to Manchester having reportedly already agreed terms last summer.

Hall hasn’t said he’s unhappy and is first choice again now - I reckon he’ll sign a new contract.

We got Baleba because we wanted him last year and he wanted to come here. It makes a big difference to make people feel wanted.
Why you bothering trying with some of those people? They won’t accept any only view even when it’s blatantly obvious.

United have more funds next summer too so can’t go big on transfers, like Spurs have, if needs be.

We got Baleba because he was crap this year and had zero competition in signing him. If Hall is crap this year then yes we will get him

If this was true, then why did we get Cunha and Mbeumo since both came off highly productive years with their previous clubs ?
