LGBTQ+ inclusion and Religion Debate in Football

If you type the words croatia, football and racism into google you get enough articles to fill a few books. So this is probably a blind spot for croatians, they don't even notice the casual stuff.

I can guarantee people were criticising it and you probably didn’t see it. However, also remember that also it’s likely that some were so unsurprised that they didn’t bother making an issue out of it.

what most likely happened is you seeing a comment from random poster somewhere, possibly on reddit/caf/YT comments sections, and thinking that's also what the rest of the world thought of our NT.

while in reality no one, UEFA or FIFA, oppo coaches, players and the fans, ever made a issue of that. not even the press who are never tired of making a story out of nothing. not because they couldn't be bothered, you can be sure they would have if they thought there was something in it.

it was simply a non-story.

we also weren't the only ones who weren't doing it, so there's that as well.

Carefully swerved the rest of my post I see. UEFA/FIFA are never going to get involved with issues like that as it was optional, and neither are players or coaches etc. similar to what happens with players not wearing anti-homophobia items, no one with something to lose wants to speak out.

Also, it was reported on in plenty of media so I’ve honestly got no idea why you’re trying to pretend otherwise. Google it, you can see the articles straight away. I literally had conversations with my mates about this issue, so no it wasn’t just reading fecking comments on YouTube

Do you live in Croatia? I can honestly understand why you didn’t feel like there was much of an issue with it if so. Even in the UK we had sections of fans booing players taking a knee, and Croatia has a far bigger issue with homophobia and racism both in football and culturally in general.

of course none of them will bother with that, that's why I said all the talk of us or someone else getting slated for not doing it is just nonsense. the simple truth is no one cares enough to do that, unless we count "mates" obviously.

I also didn't say it wasn't reported, it obviously had to be since we released the statement ourselves - "We fecking aren't going to do it!". what I said is no one particularly cared about our decision. or Poland. or others who weren't doing it. it's just a gesture without real consequences.

yes, I live in Cro.

I’m sorry but you’re going round in circles. Why did you bring up FIFA and UEFA as an example of no one caring if you knew they would never comment on an optional thing like this. It’s irrelevant. I’m telling you the press were reporting on it, fans across Europe were talking about it and you keep on saying no one cared.

Why did the HNS release a statement? Why did Modrić have to do an interview defending the decision not to kneel if no one cared?

Again you’re still ignoring the more challenging parts of my posts about long term issues in Croatia when it comes to racism and homophobia, it’s really hard to have a serious discussion when someone does that. So I’ll ask you a direct question.

I personally think a group of players can make their own decisions on things like whether to kneel. It will of course open them up to criticism. However, Modrić stated that they refused to kneel because they believe that there are better ways to tackle discrimination in football. What did Modrić or the HNS do to improve discrimination in Croatian football since?

because you keep returning to the less important part for some reason even though I have clearly never stated that no one reported it. what I said was, no one in football thought our decision was particularly worth debating, let alone worth slating us or any other NT that did the same. this is the second time I'm answering this.

as for the bolded part, I ignore them because they have nothing to do with the original statement. the guy said white footballer will get into trouble if he didn't kneel. our guys refused, but only "mates" from the pub cared the way you'd want and that's the cold truth.

Modric could join the KKK tomorrow and it still wouldn't change that simple fact.

Okay. You’ve changed it to ‘no one in football’. You didn’t state that in your original post or when I directly asked you who you meant - you just kept saying no one.

I’m not sure how you think you’re going to get a ‘debate’ from anyone inside of football. When has anyone inside football (organising bodies, players, coaches etc) come out and spoke up about decisions of another team. Fans, media and pundits did speak about this quite extensively at the time, which is where debate will come from as everyone ‘inside the game’ is desperate to protect their image and avoid controversy as much as possible.

The reason you’ve avoided the other parts of my posts is because they’re really awkward for you. You think no one cared about this because no one cared about this in Croatia, or Poland, or any other country that has similar views on racism. In fact, it was actually celebrated, which is one of the reasons the players refused to kneel.

1) yes, I should have said right away - no one of significance. there are billions of people online on various forums obviously, but I ignored them by default as they are literally on the bottom of the list of the things players think about before and after making a decision like that.

2) I've said how it is, you explained why is it like that. it all comes down to the fact that there's no real downside of the decision our or any other NT has made. except of course getting shat on by posters on football forums.

3) provided my memory serves me well, you're probably the first guy I've had this debate with. like, ever.

trust me when I say that the fact it took all these years didn't exactly shatter my conviction on this matter.

We’ve already discussed all these points. I’ve given you numerous reasons why this wasn’t thought about as an issue inside Croatia, why it’s perceived differently for the Croatian or Polish team than it would have been for the English or French team, for example, and also why no one inside of football would get involved in a discussion about the Croatian team refusing to kneel.

I think it’s best to leave it as it is and me and my mate in the pub can continue to be the only people in the world talking about issues around racism in football.
