The thing is about half the repertoire of French insults has homophobic roots (even if often the original meaning was lost) and the banter among supporters is rich in insults. Roxana Maracineanu, French minister of sports was shocked when she watched a game last season and decided to act on it in a very unsubtle way.

Ultra groups who feel oppressed by continuous politics against them are voicing their griefs against the league and showing banners with not so clever word plays.

We are now now reaching the absurd situation where games are stopped as soon as anything remotely controversial is heard or seen in a stadium that is often very hard to argue being really homophobic.

There will be some roundtables in september involving the fans about the subject. That's probably where it should've started instead of starting with a ham-fisted repressive solution.
