And even if he could win it, the criticism would be him joining a big team in order to do it. When some players are truly hated, there will always be a way to criticize them harshly
Unlike United. Who aren't a big club.

Nonsense, Robben was obviously the best player.

And Dirk Kuyt.
There was no clear cut best player in that tournament, and Messi had an excellent tournament.
While obviously the reason he won was due to the sponsorship thingy, but people sound really ignorant when they say Messi was crap in the knockouts. As if Messi does not score= he is crap.

Utd wasn't a favorite for the CL, that's what I meant
Well not really, but with Varane, Sancho and Ronaldo they've got a decent chance. I mean a bang average United knocked out PSG not a long time ago. Of course being defeated by the young boys isn't promising.

He literally wasn't that good in KO's though, especially by his standards.

but we have not won since SAF, forget about winning we have not even come close to winning, finishing second place with a huge margin gap from table leaders does not count either.
No but I'd say that with the addition of players we've had this season we've got a legimate reason to be contenders obviously with Ronaldo being one of them. Shaw, Maguire, Varane, Bruno, Pogba, Sancho, Greenwood, Rashford, Ronaldo it's not a weak team.

The same Utd lost to many worse teams than PSG so stop being deluded. Take a look at any bookies you want and look at the odds given to Utd and PSG for the CL.
Besides Ronaldo is also playing in the tougher and more physically demanding league. The 2 situations cannot be compared.

Joining PSG was always going to be that double edged sword though, and Messi knew that full well.
Oh I know, but I find the whole argument around it tiresome already. There’s people getting gleeful if he fails. He’s not even a rival player, he’s one of the most talented players of all time and people have or will spend almost two decades trying to discredit him.

I know, we just lost to young boys. We also beat PSG under Ole fielding reserves and youth products.

It's usual for people to overreact.

It's either boom or bust in terms of opinions on the internet these days with both sets of fans taking extreme positions.

You'll have it in reverse when Ronnie will go through a goal drought with Messi scoring and assisting for fun. We'll hear "tap in/penalty" merchant if Ronaldo has an extra ordinary season and "anyone would do in a farmer's league" if Messi is able to do it.

Both set of fans are as stupid as the other and clearly both will always, always lose this endless battle and come here to brag about superiority of thier "GOAT".

Thanks its my real name. The first name. You can spell it different ways;)

But Ronaldo fans are a bit sensitive of banter about his tap in style of play I see. Probably because you guys know there is some truth to it, deep down.

The things I’ve read here about Messi after a couple minutes at PSG, are just as crazy, if not more. Offcourse Ronaldo isn’t soley about his tap ins. Honestly he is one of the best penalty takers in the world. Probably the best.
All your displaying here is that you started watching football very recently or you simply know zlich about the game.

I dont think they would tbh. I think this United side is a few consistent games away from being considered a serious threat. Especially if twat somebody in our next cl game.
You're still managed by Ole, that's like the weakest link in the team right now and the UCL isn't a given for any team so it would be difficult even for PSG. So it's really hard to predict who's going to win it but surely PSG are favorites since Messi joined above Manchester United, but let's wait and see wich teams advance from the group stage. If Manchester United advance they'll be a threat but not favorites because of having a questionable coach and no experience in the latter stages of the competition.

When a site quotes Miralem fecking Pjanic as the fifth best player of the tournament after three group stages where Bosnia failed to qualify instead of any German players who dominated the tournament, you know it's utter bullshit
It's a stat based list, not subjective. Can't you see that? Pjanic there is sort of an outlier - because his good stats come from just 3 games. Messi had the best stats in the WC. Him being awarded golden ball was a correct decision.

It is subjective, the stats that rating considers are not complete list and the weighted list is always subjective.

As per them, Soucek, Mount, Mane were 5th, 6th, 7th best players in the league last season.

Before that season, Ricardo Pereira, Adama, Mahrez, Maddison were top 10 players and Van Dijk was not even top 10 in the league when they won the league.

Btw I agree with the point that Messi was very good in 2014 and deserved best player award. I don't agree with "Messi is the best because Whoscored says so" point. They have weird rating system which rated Mustafi as top CB almost every season he played in PL.

I never saw the problem with Messi getting that award. he was the best performing individual that got the furthest in tournament while also having the most motm awards. nothing controversial in that.

I've not kept up with what he's doing but that reaction to getting substituted has been making the rounds around the internet, so I looked up how many goals he's scored. Apparent none in the league.

The French league might not be a farmer's league afterall.

That's result oriented thinking. I mean, it's up to you but I wouldn't do that.

Oh and by the way, Messi was clearly the best player at WC 2014 alongside Arjen Robben. Everybody who says something different hasn't watched him play or doesn't understand what he's talking about.Give him another face and another name and literally nobody would question that it was deserved.
He contributed one assist and 0 goals in 4 matches in UCL. In those 4 matches, they scores 2 goals. Argentina reached the final despite their bad attack.

He was the best player in the group stage, and just ok after that.

Messi fails:  can’t cut it in a farmers league

Messi succeeds: it doesn’t count, it’s a farmers league

Messi has only one way to succeed and that’s to win the UCL which won’t happen with this club.
Why though? They reaches semis last year and the final the year after. And then added him.

They should be right there with City as the main favorites.

Showed a lack of class in his reaction frankly. The manager is the boss, that's it. As it should be.

As ridiculous as it sounds, you can have a good game without having a goal or an assist. Just out of curiosity, have you watched the matches?

Probably because of Poch, you don't win big things with Poch.

I don’t think they have the right mentality for it. Especially under Poch. I also don’t think Messi will be a great fit. He will do well but in the key moments, Messi of late and Mbappe haven’t turned up. I put them below all the English sides and Bayern.

I watched all of them cause I was supporting Argentina back then. Their attack was pretty shit, and Messi was at the heart of it. 2 goals in more than 430 minutes of KO (three of the matches went to extra time, so essentially the same amount of minutes as for 5 games) is pretty bad. The team had some control in midfield and a quite good defense, but the attack was not their strongest point, so yes, while it is possible to have good matches without scoring, at the same time, making an assist (which was great, tbf) and no goals in circa 450 minutes of play (if you add injury time) is not very good.

He was good, but outside of group stage matches, he wasn't that great. Robben, James, and half of the German team deserved the award more.

nah. Robben also had couple of great group stage matches followed by nothing vs Mexico, nothing in 0-0 draw vs Costa Rica and nothing in 0-0 draw vs Argies where they lost. James on the other hand could have got that award if Colombia didn't lose in quarters already.

I felt that Robben was better, but it could just be that the expectations were lower.

Lahm, Kroos, Neuer, and to a lesser degree Muller had an overall great tournament, and most importantly won it. Germany also scored 11 goals in KO, compared to Argies 2. I think that one of them should have won the award. Probably Kroos.

I think that Mascherano might have been Argentina's best player outside of the group stage.

What are you even talking about? What stats? The most important stat is that Argentina scored 2 goals in 450 minutes - 1-0 after 120 minutes with Suisse, 1-0 after 90 minutes with Belgium, 0-0 after 120 minutes with the Dutch and 0-1 after 120 minutes vs Germany. Germany scored like 20 in the same period. Go watch baseball for more silly stats.

Has Poch been told not to sub him off again unless Messi is OK with it, and that whole narrative about the knee injury a smokescreen? Seems a tad strange to only talk about that now, given Messi's reaction to being subbed.
