He was on a hattrick against Leipzig and gave a penalty to Mbappe because he won it. Today, he won the penalty so I think its down to that.

Mbappe was supposed to take the penalty but gave it to Messi, explaining how it's important to get Messi going and it's only going to be good for the team in the long run.

Fair enough. Thought maybe it was a contractual stipulation.

You can google it, very good metric to measure offensive impact outside of goals :)
I googled it and found practically no hits. Eventually I found an explanation of what it is here.

I don't find this particularly useful or interesting. It's just some person who tried to come up with a new variable to play around with. As far as I can gather, it can't claim to be correlated to sporting outcomes. According to the author, players with a similar xGBU include Real Madrid's Pepe (1.10), Marco Veratti (0.95), and Alex Iwobi (0.98). Messi had a similar xGBU to Phillip Lam (1.29 to 1.24). What a pile of useless dogshit.

Try and look up the definition of a playmaker.
. playmaker is a player who controls the flow of the team's play, and is often involved in offensively and defensively play passing moves which lead to goals , through their vision, technique, ball control, creativity and passing ability.( quoting verbatim from Wikipedia)

the bolded part is what makes me say Messi is not a play maker. How Argentina played vs Barca was the difference between Ever Banerga and Xavi. Xavi and even without Iniesta at times he took the same blueprint of Barca to Spain. That’s what a play maker does.

Assists or key passes=/=playmaker.

Yes modern fullbacks like TAA, Cancelo and earlier the likes of Baines or Dani Alves in Sevilla are/were playmakers. Because the whole creativity of those teams were in a way dependant on them.
Maybe it’s a difference of how you define it. Your broad definition means Liverpool can start a game with 7 play makers at once( TAA, Robertson, Ox, Tiago, Mane, Salah, Fabinho). I guess we just have to accept that our definition is not the same and not derail the thread.

There is a major difference between an advanced playmaker and deep lying one or a CM. Messi is an advanced playmaker his duties are different.

Why is this being contested? Didn't Messi win four Iffhs best playmaker awards? He's tied with Xavi. Next highest is Debruyne/Iniesta with two

I honestly dont know. Its weird. According to someone's rigid definition some of greatest playmakers of all time wouldnt be playmakers.

None of the Mane, Salah, Ox, Robertson or Fabinho operate as playmakers in Liverpool system, just because they have assists doesn't make them playmaker. TAA is different beast, because he is basically a playmaker playing in full back, because the system allows him, and in a way is dependent on him and he has the vision and passing range to be one.

Their is nothing wrong with my definition, not my fault, if you want to change what playmaker means in its basic form.

No one is saying he did, dummy. It's standard PR you promote the player winning the Ballon d'Or, he happens to play at PSG now. Again, should Barcelona be the ones promoting it? Makes even less sense.

Just seems kind of cheap.

I think only his national team would feel comfortable to promote it, or Messi himself.

I have the same feeling, but my main issue is with the award being given at the end of a calendar year. People who vote make their judgement in the second half of the season who already ended so I would prefer to the award being given in the summer at the end of the regular season, once all the major tournaments have been completed.

I went to the PSG game tonight. He was pretty awful. Mbappe though.. something else entirely. Sounds funny to say but I didn’t realise how good he is. Unplayable.

Many thinks Lewandowski deserved it, just deal with it.
And many think Messi deserved it and since he actually won to, you should learn to accept it instead of constantly crying about it.

No team in particular.

He might, but France Football don't rate current Bundesliga and current Serie A.

You have to either play in PL or La Liga.

But i'm not crying about it?

I believe Lewandowski was better, but i don't believe its a scandal Messi won it either.

Watched the highlights of Monaco game. It was a very poor game for Messi. I don’t remember I have been watching him playing that bad in terms of performance - miss chances, poor touches and passing are off. Got an assist though. Not sure if he could still get back to his form soon, the sign isn’t there yet.

For a guy who just won the balon d'or it's pretty strange to see he's not even close to being the best player on his own team...

His retirement tour really isn't being helped by Ronaldo scoring nearly every week in a much harder league.
