Yes. It was very good defending. However it wasnt racing across to save a goal, it was just standing still and clearing it from a set piece
Ah yes, he didn't have to anticipate anything at all,

I think we make this excuse too often for our players, we need a bigger, faster and stronger CB than Martinez. Just like we need a much more mobile CM than Casemiro. We need to stop trying to accommodate these players because they are exceptional in small aspects of their roles. Or trying to make excuses becise of who they have to play with, we just need better and more well rounded players.

Yeah I agree. We are supposed to be building a team to challenge in a season or two, that means looking at every area to see where we have weaknesses. We have a lot of players who I think are good enough to be in the squad of a title challenging team, Martinez included, but if you think about a team that can go toe to toe with City for a league, or a PSG/Bayern for a champions league, most of our players don't start including Martinez.

Sure he did but he was stood on the line doing his job. Lisandro had to read that the goalkeeper and defence had mucked up and quickly get back onto the line to stop the goal

Firstly, they've barely been fit at the same time together. Secondly, they're both suited to play on the right. Thirdly, they're both slow. Fourthly, neither are elite defenders either.

Though a fit De Ligt is probably the closest we have to a suitable CB if we could find a partner for him who's better than him and has pace. But he's never fit anyway so irrelevant.

Brutal that we've left ourselves with so many holes in the squad.

All great points but I was replying to the idea that any larger CB we sign to replace Lisandro will have us asking what we were thinking

If your point is that only exceptional CBs who fit together and have some of Lisandro's skills would replace him then we are in agreement

He & de Ligt, along with Shaw & Mazraoui, make up an entire back four that simply cannot be relied upon due to frequent injuries. If the club can make it happen, one or two of them need to be sold this summer and upgrades brought in. Shaw will not be leaving due to his contract - nobody will take something in that range on for such an average player. Martinez is generally good on the ball - not last night, obviously - but United need an upgrade, somebody who will help bring along Yoro & Heaven.

Got manhandled all night by DLC and lost his marbles. Real pro, showed how much he cares about UTD and his teammates. "Butcher".

I don’t think we a single defender that is a starter if we want to challenge for the title. Maybe if we go and buy a couple of top class ones you can plug the gaps with what we have but it’s a bunch of squad players, a few them are also very injury prone and one is 33 so the whole defence needs a lot of work.

I’ve said before for me Martinez is someone you don’t give a new contact to, ideally you’d sell him this summer but with all the other issues that is very unlikely.

I knew it would be bad news for defence when I saw Martinez and Yoro as CB pair in the starting XI, but I could never imagine it would be that chaotic and unorganised.

The red was maybe a bit stupid of him, but one of the most ridiculous red cards I’ve ever seen and I don’t blame him too much.

Great save on the goal line but that was pretty much the only positive from him.

He thrives next to someone like maguire but any other defensive partner and he seems to struggle.

That's like saying why do you need heating in Siberia during winter when Earth is orbiting the sun...

Its like asking why he needs to be faster when he's average paced and it was enough to cover our other defenders and goalkeeper moving to the goal line for a clearance

I've said that have I?

You know what mate, after reading your responses I've concluded that it is absolutely pointless to engage in any discussion with you. Have a nice day.

His red was soft but it typifies why he cannot play there and needs more support.

It´s not the height aspect for me. Cannavaro was of a similar height and I reckon he would handle himself fine. It´s about build and all round athleticism. He just hasn´t got enough in his locker to dominate a big centre forward, so he has to resort to dark arts stuff that our players will always be penalised for. Our players have to be so disciplined as the refs will look for any excuse to send them off.

We saw it with Fellaini when he came here. Those little half fouls he got away with playing for Everton, he was pulled up for time and time again for us. If you are the kind of player who is always playing on the limit, you just won´t get away with it at our club.

It was Lisandro’s first game back after being out for a while with an injury. The manbun pull aside, his performance is what you’d expect from a player who’s been out for a while.

Agree with that.

Just stick him in CM if we're not going to sell him. He has a top footballing brain, can receive and pass a ball as well as anyone.

Who did he play there against this season? I thought he was excellent, up there as the best CM performance this season. So obviously we've never tried it again.

His physical limitations will be an issue in CM, but they'll be an issue wherever he is on the pitch.

Against Villa. Thought he looked very good as well.

It´s good having a ball-playing centre back but from now on CFs will obviously target him more with rough stuff to see if they can get something like DCL did.

That injury was supposed to a minor injury lasting just a week but somehow lasted more than a month(?) and then he needs few more matches to get match sharpness back. Oh and a red card which means he will be out for another 3 games.

And then we wonder why we suck. We really should cut our losses. This is what, his 4th season here? He missed huge chunks of games due to injury every season.

Sure he can pick a pass but I rather have someone who is available and reliable every game. If we give him a new contract I'll lose every last bit of the already little faith I have in our senior management.

He'll be a huge miss for the Liverpool game. If that's all it takes to get a 3 match ban, then I bet he wishes he kicked Calvert-Lewin in the bollocks instead of a light hair grab.

Preach. He needs a Shaw 2025/26 season in term of fitness to even be considered given a new contract in my opinion. He's a fantastic player for the most part when he's fit and undoubtedly a good CB but he's just too unreliable to count on.

I mean, its become an absolute shambles hasnt it? Even the most blinded football fan knows that you cant be giving red cards for that - his eyes were firmly on the ball when going for the challenger and you can clearly see there was no intentional pull or malice in it.

I actually dont understand anymore.

Never expected anything to come of this.

Has there even been successful appeals after the introduction of VAR? It made a lot more sense to appeal an onfield decision that couldn't be reviewed in real time.
I would imagine its more the club making a point truth be told. Appealing was the right thing to do, because it makes the decision look even more of joke now.

Three match ban for tweaking a fecking bobble.

It was daft of him of course, but violent conduct my arse.

As someone already wrote, he's been riding his luck with dirty acts, and it's very hypocrite of us to cry about Lisandro getting a soft red card here imo. He did lash out against Arsenal very recently and hit Jesus in the back, and he was lucky that VAR did not sanction it. He needs to cut those antics, he cost the team here.

I think we'll be looking to sell him this summer.

Andy Mitten (club mouthpiece) from TOTD has been repeating the last couple of weeks how the club wants to see money on the pitch and his availability is a big problem. I think it's to get the fans ready if we do sell him.

If we manage to get de Ligt back to full fitness it will be no problem to part ways with Lisandro. De Ligt, Maguire, Heaven and Yoro are quite good, and we also have Mazraoui as an option there as seen recently

As good as MdL is, his injury record does not demonstrate he’s a player to be relied upon.

Sunderland 0:0 Man Utd New
Very mixed performance today. Some of his distribution was terrible, looked very rusty. Heaven should not have made way for him, the lad has been fine lately.

He was much better in the second half after another very passive first were he was letting Brobbey pin him.

Should be looking to move him on or try him in midfield. He has had about 6 months good form combined across his whole Utd career, and while he is a superb technical footballer the way the game is moving is making his weaknesses even more of an issue defensively. So if he stays try him in midfield,

Why didn't we just play him at CDM today? It would've solved both issues in defence and midfield.
