Call me old fashioned, I like my central defenders to be able to defend. Of course the best ones do far more than that, but you have to be good at the fundamentals.

I'm sure teams will be queuing up to sign a centre back who is very dodgy defensively and who can't stay fit.
 
Haven't watched the full game, so maybe he has been shit. Did see the 2-0 goal though, and that's a very difficult situation to defend, even if he could've/should've done better. But reading on here you would think he made some kind of massive mistake. Weirdos.

And I'm perfectly fine with him dropping a stinker for his NT anyway.
 
Poor today but overall he has had a good tournament, I do think he is over rated by Utd fans but his ability on the ball is top class.

However the real issue is he isn’t going to be able to play twice a week for us, he most likely won’t even be able to avoid injuries playing once a week. Unfortunately that inability to play twice a week also probably applies to Shaw, Mazraoui, De Ligt and Maguire.

Beaten for a header, failed to stop a runner from midfield get on the ene of a counter.

First one, he could step out quicker, but it's a great ball in and a nice bit of movement to attack the ball from the Egypt player. Second one, he looks at the Zico about 4 or 5 times, then loses him at the vital moment, he's probably a bit too focused on trying to cut out the ball across.

He makes little mistakes and could do better, but both goals are also down to good movement and anticipation from the Egyptian players. Hard to pin the blame totally on him for both goals.

Nah just made a mistake for the first goal. Opponent beats him to the header and scores. Was okay other than that

We live in a world where every mistake gets calls for players to be soled or benched like it’s not happened since the game was invented.

That’s of course hyperbolic if someone claims that. For me it has been frustrating watching Licha this world cup because 95% he does above norm, scores a goal and has an assist, and then he makes three mistakes leading to three goals vs Cabo Verde and Egypt almost costing Argentina both times.

I’m all up for selling any player at the right time and reinvesting as long as it improves the team but I don’t see how doing that with Licha will give us that result right now.

He’s our best ball playing centre back by a country mile and without him we’d struggle even more to break teams down than we already do.

His lack of height is the reason most look for any reason to replace him.
 
Need to shadow ban anyone who talks about “trying him in midfield”

You only have to watch Martínez play, maybe one time, before you realise he quite clearly isn’t going to be a good central midfielder

He’s a very good specialist CB. Sometimes that’s enough.

That argument could be said for any player that unexpectedly switched position. I'm sure you would say the same about Konrad Laimer moving to fullback position.

Yeah, moving the extremely robust, box to box high energy midfield Konrad Laimer from central midfield to right back was a real head scratcher.

Not that he has literally anything to do with Martinez, who has played under 4 managers at this club now with not a single one considering it.

EDIT: we seem to be talking at cross purposes here. I’m not disputing that players can change positions. I’m talking specifically about Martinez moving to midfield. It will never happen at this club. For good reason

Since when did high energy midfielders suddenly morph into fullbacks? Of course it was a head scratcher, Bayern fans questioned it at the time. It's like saying Tonali would be a great fullback. Do you believe that would be the case?

Not saying he should play there full time, but there are obviously games where it would be beneficial in terms of opening defenses with his line splitting passes. Not everything has to be nothing or all in, that's why managers like SAF and Pep used this versatility to become some of the best managers of all time.
 
Had a poor game with a couple of moments of dodgy positioning for each Egypt goal.

However, he was probably the single biggest contributor to their win in the last round, so he'll still have some credit in the bank.
 
I like him far more than Marcus Rojo because he is all around much better player than Rojo, but he has that bit of Marcus Rojo around him that you just cannot ignore.

Big fighter, excellent distribution(Rojo was erratic, but could be very good on his day with the ball), but defensively he is always suspicious and will hardly ever had solid run of few months in defence without having couple of bad games or moments when he simply cost you results. Even the likes of Maguire had good spells over the years defensively, but I don't remember Martinez ever having even half of the season when you can say he was consistently good defender. It's simply too big difference between his good and bad days.

Injuries played its part too, but it is what it is, let's hope it will iron out with experience like someone like Ramos did, and hopefully he stays free of injuries.

No, he was a CB, but he played as a midfielder under ten Hag in their 2019 CL run after the 3rd or 4th game where he did very well, and he's a better player now with more experience so playing him there in games where we dominate possession and struggle against lowblock will have its advantages. Of course many will disagree because he makes the occasional mistake and is a natural CB.

Rojo was an awful player. Who cost us an absolute fortune when you factor in Nani.

He's small, injury prone, can't defend and should be played in midfield or sold.

Fans on here are always desperately waiting for one bad game or moment to lay into him and speak as though he is always bad, mostly due to bias against his size.

Some people think he’s world class, some think he’s a good player, some think he should be sold, some people think he’s overrated.

There’s never a consensus on a player.

So just give your own opinion of him, no matter what it is.

Yes and I've never said otherwise?

My contention was with your idea that he started as a midfielder at Ajax and was moved into defence after having failed there. He was always a defender who was thrown into midfield out of necessity to do a job and then moved back into his natural position.
 
Shame they won as he needs a long rest. I say this for all our players but he especially, given his injury record. Looked like he had some type of arm injury but carried on. Hope it’s nothing.

Those counter attacks of Egypt were soo good, our players should study them. The dribbling and movement was sublime.
