Lisandro Martínez | 2026/27 Performances

Just 1 CB whose been out for more then 50% of the available time. That's hardly a great record isn't it?

Regarding that question I've already answered it. Martinez is a top CB. If he was in La Liga or in the Serie A he'd be one of the top 5 CBs there. He might do a job in the EPL in a 3 men CB assuming he'd be partnered with the right people. However he's not suited for a 4 men defense in the EPL. The rules are different, it encourages physicality and height and Martinez lack both. Go and check Arsenal's CB pair. It's even taller then our treble CB pair. Van Dijk-Araujo-Jacquet are 6ft4, 6ft3 and 6ft2 respectively while Chelsea 3 men CB are all above the 6ft mark despite playing with 3 CBs. Height matters in the EPL and its becoming more important at every season that pass. It's all about stamina, physicality and athleticism these days

You haven't answered anything. Why would Charrager and Rio endorse Licha for this league, the latter admitting he was wrong to say otherwise?

Your answer is that he's good for other leagues. That doesn't answer my question.

Oh no definitely not! Back then there were the likes of Vidic, Rio, Stam, Campbell and co all way better defenders than today CBs. Even the attacking minded players were better. I mean were are the Scholes, Lampards and Gerrards in today's football? The likes of Eliot Anderson had been sold for almost 120m while Savinho had moved for 70m-80m. How much would prime Roy Keane or prime Ryan Giggs cost in today's football?

What did change is that EPL teams are resorting more to a more physical and athletic catenaccio type of football. Take Arsenal's defense which was key to their success last season as an example. It's feckin massive. In terms of inches it would dwarf our treble side defense.

And Arsenal are one the most underwhelming set of champions I can remember. They'd arguably be better if they actually tried to play football instead of smashing six footers into every position.

Yes. We're going to counter attack because thats what suits our attacking players. I dont believe we're going to try and dominate the ball at the expense of everything else like Pep's teams
We have already shown we're going to press more and that is the type of football Carrick wants to play, he's already mentioned that, referring the likes of PSG. For that we need more mobile CBs.

Everything in today's football is underwhelming. It's mostly based on height, physicality, pace and athleticism. That's were football is unfortunately heading to

Carra is possibly the most overrated cb in EPL football history while Rio...let's say Rio was blessed with amazing genes. You only have to hear his podcast to notice that there's not much going between his ears

There's a reason why top EPL managers refrained and still refrain from buying short CBs even though some of the best CBs in football weren't tall and I explained that many times already. It's also a myth that the EPL is becoming smaller/ less physical. Schmeichel used to look massive at 6ft4. These days you have the likes of burn (6ft7), Berge, haaland, onana (Aston Villa) and Kjell Scherpen (6ft9) who are taller then the great Dane some of whom will make him look like little Dane

We had the highest balls won in the final third under ETH using these same players. It would be more ideal if we had more mobile defenders thats for sure. But theyve shown they can do it to a certain level. I'm sure next summer when we do sign at least 1 CB to replace Maguire it'll be someone faster than both Lisandro and Maguire. They are 54th and 61st out of 68 for max speed from CBs so far this season. So even if we dont prioritise mobility from a CB and sign a CB from the premier league because they're outstanding in another way, they're likely to be in the 50 faster than Maguire and Lisandro so far this season and not in the 7 slower.

Meanwhile we have faster options. Yoro is 22nd fastest CB so far while Heaven is 43rd. But Maguire and Martinez will play because they've a far better defensive record than 1 of them with a Yoro or Heaven. And thats more important than whats "ideal" on paper.

Martinez isnt your average short center back. He's extremely physical and proven to hold his own almost every time.

You have known biased pundits eating their words and admitting they were wrong. And standout PL CBs who knows their craft saying the same.

And yet you still put your head in the sand. Outstanding but let's move on.

Btw here are the fastest CBs in the league in the first 2 games so far

I'd be interested to know which of the CBs faster or around the same speed as Yoro posters want us to buy since that would be "ideal" for a high line

According to fotmob, Mukiele is the highest performing CB that isnt at a top club already and we could actually buy and he's #6 fastest. But he's 28. Ajer is the fastest so far and 11th best performing CB in the first 2 games but again 28. Murillo is 26th best performing CB behind Maguire in 20th, but Murillo is on the list as 9th fastest. So you get the speed in exchange for a small amount of performance from our current CB, but obviously 26th best overall doesnt sound the best. Funnily enough Van De Ven hasnt registered a lot of speed so far and is #37 fastest, a fair bit behind Yoro and 29th best performing CB overall. There arent many "ideal" fits of fast CBs who are also overall some of the best CBs in the league that arent already at the top clubs. We just missed one in Lacroix who is 1 place behind Yoro for speed but hes just gone to Chelsea.

His passing is good but what annoys me is that he is so slow with the ball most of the time. In possession there is also a point with moving the ball quickly between the players but he always stops and tries to pick a through pass or long ball. It’s needed sometimes of course, but many times I wish he would just move on the ball quicker. For that to happen, though, the other defenders would need to take more responsibility to advance the ball.

Sky had this graphic before the game:

And this has been going on for years:

Not bad for a midget who can't run and needs replacing. If he stays fit, we're a different proposition.

The exact reason is habit from when talking about Lisandro in games when there have been multiple Martinez on the pitch, such as Argentina games or games against opponents with a Martinez. Things started to get confusing so I started to say Lisandro. But I'm going to call him whatever I want to and its funny someone is getting upset about it. After all the nonsense posted in this thread to slate him, now someone is mad that part of his name is being used. The arguments go from bad to insane. Anything to complain about, just anything, posters will put it in here.
You think I’m upset. Bless you. Thanks. You should take a break.

Yes you're very obvious. Nobody makes a dramatic post like you did whining about a player being called a specific name if they havent been pushed past the brink of sanity.
I even said it’s not a hill I’m going to die on.

I think you need to stop, and try to check your own posts, and seriously take a break from the internet. You seem a little unhinged.

Yeah very believable coming from the guy whining about the which of a player's names are used. Every accusation you make is a confession

Ok. You really are a very strange poster, and have and clearly struggle with comprehension. No problem. I’ll go and be sad and mad.

Fair enough, you have been till now so why change

I'll tell you what though, if one day you start making reasonable posts in this thread instatead of slating Lisandro like normal, that day I'll go out of my way to accommodate your trauma with his first name being used. Until then

I’ll comment based on what I think of Martinez. Feel free to put me on ignore. I won’t get sad or mad if we disagree, promise.

Much more younger and less crocked versions of these same players.

With a much lower sample size and well, with a manager that could not even win 2 games in a row. I love Licha and think he's an amazing player, Maguire too, the way he's turned around his career has been brilliant.

But I feel like this is the season where we need to give more opportunities to Heaven and Yoro, next season is the defensive overhaul for sure and we'll know how well Yoro/Heaven fit into that.

If they play better they'll get more opportunities. They will get a few due to injuries, the rest is up to them

I've never seen him look so uninterested. It was like him and Shaw swapped roles today. He took no responsibility on or off the ball and just played the game so casually.

He was hugely disappointing this game.

Defended poorly so far this season, great passing against Ipswich but I’m not sold that the benefit outweighs his lack of pace and height even if he is fit.

Still stand by that he should've been sold in summer. In the last year of his contract too, my bet is he wanders off to Barca for nothing next summer.

How did he defend poorly?

Has to be one of the most overrated players we've had in the last decade. His injuries saved his career here.

Definitely, by no means a bad player but his reputation definitely outweighs his actual ability.

I counted one poor clearance where he gave an unnecessary corner, a miskicked clearance before 1-0 (though there's plenty of blame for that goal to go around), and once when he tried to block Barry who feigned a shot and Shaw (who played very well I thought) had to bail him out. None of them big mistakes. I may have missed something, but other than that I didn't see him put a foot wrong. Which isn't bad at all.

He doesn't make big mistakes because he doesn't commit. Today he kept backing off. I know Shaw is an issue, but Licha barely covers the mistakes

Weird. He made a terrific block for Johnson's effort that looked on course for the bottom corner.

Not convinced we're better off with him in the team than Heaven tbh. With Licha you have to compensate for his aerial weakness by playing Maguire too.

When? I saw one situation today in the second half where he was in a 1v2 and solved it brilliantly by switching between covering both players, forcing the Everton player (forget who it was) into a decision which he bottled. Committing in that situation would've given the Everton player an easy pass and they would've been through on goal. Sometimes backing off and not committing is the right decision, and overcommitting is a mistake. Like Shaw against Ipswich.

One of the most overrated United players of recent times. We should have sold him this summer.

Constantly pairing him with Maguire is a bad decision.

One of Yoro or Heaven should always play. At least they can provide some pace and agility. It's also just incredibly dumb to waste a £60m talent like Yoro as we are currently doing. Dare I say it's even cowardly.

This team can’t carry a CB with obvious physical weaknesses.
