Lisandro Martínez | 2026/27 Performances

Really disappointed by the reactions on a United forum for one of our players getting hurt. Not just in here but the WC final match thread too. This must be related to the England-Argentina match resentment.

Yep, it's to do with the Malvinas banner.

Some simply want rid of him because he was involved in it and his injuries are just an excuse.
Quite a few probably wish him harm just to further their cause.

Truly despicable stuff.

However, saying that, he is injured a lot. Same with Shaw and de Ligt. A serious offer should be considered for all three.

I think you’re way off the mark mate.

You’d struggle to find anyone British under the age of 50 who even slightly gives a shit about those islands.

I didn’t even know until reading this thread Licha had anything to do with the banner.

The frustration in here will 99% be down to his getting injured (yet again) heading into the season and his general unreliability. The reactions are out of order, and over the top - but they’re nothing to do with “the cause” whatever the feck that is.

There were plenty who wanted him gone even before the WC.

Nothing is the sort. You are a disgrace for saying it is.

Just read the threads on him before the WC or before that game.

He’s a divisive player, and yes it’s down to his injuries and the fact he’s played lass than 50% of games over four years.

No one wants him injured, but it felt inevitable.

You need to reassess yourself.

Have to agree with this.

What is it with people bringing fecking politics into discussions

I want him gone because he's never fecking available. I couldn't give a toss about banners or some stupid fecking islands

Hard to argue his case as first choice CB going into the season, his body is just shot at this point. He should head to Spain or Italy, somewhere less physically demanding.

CB becoming a bit of an issue .. again. I swear every semi competent CB we bring in ends up constantly injured. Been that was since the end of Fergie's reign.

A hopefully minor muscle injury after playing around 8 games in a short space of time is not that bad. This injury needs to be taken in isolation. I really hope he is back and ready early in the season as he is one of our best current CBs and, it seems to me he loves battling for United.

Why does it need to be taken in isolation?

He can't stay fit.

Because one of the biggest injuries he had was his cruciate ligament, caused by a bad tackle.

I agree he has more injuries than most, but let's not just discard him when he could even be back ready for the opening day.

He, just like any other injury prone player, should be up for sale if we can bring in a reasonable replacement because let's face it neither Maguire nor de Ligt are exactely reliable when it comes to staying fit.

If you get the chance to discard him for anything like a decent transfer fee then you do so immediately.

We will get nowhere with this stop/start silliness when trying to build a consistent back 4.

If anyone is stupid enough to buy him then snatch their hand off.

Our policy of only signing players in one position each summer will prove counter productive.

Absolutely should be peppering defence, midfield and attack with new players each summer - instead we'll be held to ransom for midfielders this summers and defenders the next.

As everyone keeps on saying, he is injury prone therefore we should sell him. But who is this magical buyer? Maybe teams would take a 20m bet that he would recover, but it would cost us at least £80m to replace his quality when he is available. And who knows, maybe he will do a Shaw and get the injury act together.

Exactly.

Our three experienced centre backs are De Ligt, Maguire and Martinez. Maguire can’t play two games a week, De Ligt and Martinez can’t be relied upon.

Out of the three considering that we renewed Maguire, Martinez would be the most easiest to shift as nobody is going to be interested in De Ligt. Where as Martinez would probably benefit from playing in a league with less intensity and maybe a team that is more dominant than us, so he doesn’t have much defending, but can impact the games with his passing.

Absolutely.

However, despite him giving his all, his injury record is unfortunate and it will encourage selling him on.

I hate it as much as you do, Andy, believe me, but there it is.

They even had to move a thread on this forum into the 'general' section after a politically charged pile-on after Wednesday's result.

Simply delusional (or worse) to think some, not all, people 'want rid' because of his role with the banner.

The only (justifiable) reason we'd sell Licha is the injuries, so I'd have to disagree nobody would want de Ligt, as we'd be selling for exactly the same reason.

They'd fetch similar prices, too.

Speaking of which, Maguire isn't shy a few injuries. We have rotten luck with defenders.

If there's a good offer on the table somewhere, I'd sell.

He's too injury prone.

Tbf, if you read some of the reactions in the thread after the England game, there were indeed some who said he shoumd never play for United again, explicitly because of that. Some of them also replying about getting rid of him in this thread after the final. So the poster you are calling disgraceful is not the one bringing this to the table.

That doesn’t change the fact that many posters here also were for replacing Licha before this WC, and will naturally not be deterred by him becoming injured again, so shortly after last time. Both these things can be true.

What I personally find disgraceful though, is looking at for instance the posts quoted that someone thought must be related to political grudges as well. To me, these posts, and quite a few others, are even worse if there is no Malvinas/Falklands related animosity behind them, because then the sheer self centered lack of respect for one of your own implied in hurling public abuse or writing ‘Get rid!’, in public (yes, this is public) moments or hours after he was injured in a WC final, watching his team lose it to boot - to me it’s mindbogglingly selfish and insensitive, and truly internet asshole behaviour.

Yea, I get frustrated too when Mason Mount, Luke Shaw or back in the day, Bryan Robson or Ray Wilkins, is injured again, because I so want United to win, and it thwarts my plans. I might even shout ‘get rid!’ in my head a few times before I get around to thinking that it’s the player who is one of my own, whom I want to fight and win on behalf of me, whose carreer is ruined by those injuries while I sit and sip beer shouting at the pub.

Just to shout ‘get rid!’ over Bryen Robson getting injured again in WC 1986 for instance, would rightfully have someone through me out of the pub. To sit down and write it on a public forum is even more disgraceful than that, in my view. People should look at themselves a bit.

Nobody is going to want De Ligt until they know how he has recovered from his back injury. Martinez picks up niggles and is out for two-three weeks.

I like the player a lot but one of our biggest problems in general is consistency. Partially because of injuries, partially because of inexperience.
What I am missing are the pillars. 5-6 players who you can trust to perform every week on the highest level.
A stable CB pairing would be crucial and maybe Martinez and de Ligt can still become this but today the situation is frustrating.

I doubt it's a deliberate policy that we want to continue. It's just how things have fallen in terms of what players we had that needed replacing due to performances and contract situations. It was mostly our defence a couple of years ago, then it was obvious our entire attack needed to be ripped apart and completely rebuilt last season (combined with the fact there were a couple of good options available that wanted to come), and now with Casemiro's contract come to an end AND Ugarte now having had two seasons to prove he's not an option (even before his injury) it's now mostly our midfield.

Of course the issue is that by doing it that way (even if it wasn't deliberate) each group will then somewhat need to be worked on again at a similar time in the future. As you said it already appears it will be the defence that mostly needs work next season, although just how much will depend on how Yoro and Heaven develop this season. If we buy the right players (both in ability and age profile) then it should start spreading out a bit more evenly in the future rather than clustering all in certain positions at the same time.

I think Martinez is one of our better footballers and I would be really disappointed to see him leave.

Given we have Heaven coming through, who needs decent minutes to aid his development, we could quite easily manage Martinez’s minutes with Heaven playing regularly too to lighten the load. Could be the ideal set up for the next few seasons until Heaven is ready.

Replacing what Martinez offers immediately would cost us a fortune and probably not worth it currently, seeing as we have more pressing squad gaps.

I don't think that's fair. It's probably more accurate to suggest that a lot of world football fans, especially England, Egypt and Spain fans, have a bad taste in their mouth over the whole Argentinian squad, to be honest. Forget the Malvinas flag, I'm sure many don't really give a feck about that unless you were personally affected in the 80s or are a gammon. They were just horrible, dirty sore losers. Martinez less so, but still involved.

He’s far less important, because he simply cannot be relied upon. Now is a good time to bring in a replacement, as Maguire will leave next season, and the future of MDL is undetermined.

We could easily be in a position next summer where we have 2 perma crocks in Martinez and MDL, and Maguire having left, along with Shaw. We would then be in serious trouble.

Replacing Martinez with someone reliable is the most sensible option, and most forward looking.

We have been terrible at selling players when their stock is highest. Martinez is a great player but if a substantial bid comes in, it would make sense to sell.

Exactly. It’s the reality we need to trade players.

We hang on to players for far too long, hoping and hoping that they will either come good or stop getting injuries. We need to be strategic in moving on players that either don’t work or can’t get on the pitch, and do that far quicker.

Why? He is barely ever available for us

A stop gap can do that and will actually be available when we need him. We risk having to play Heaven in a crucial game and then see him being annihilated by it. A humiliating performance can ruin a kid

I’ve already said why in my original post.

I’m afraid that is professional football at the highest level, it will always be sink or swim.

Not really no. Kids are meant to be protected and they should be introduced slowly to the first team not thrown in the deep end simply because our first team CB is rarely available at club level. I recently listened to Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes interview and they basically attributed their success to the veterans around them in the first years of their career. Veterans are there to bail kids out not viceversa

Brutal reading..
"Overall, Martinez has missed 92 United matches in four seasons due to injury.
Martinez has played 110 times for United and his contract expires next year, although United are expected to trigger the one-year option."

He does seem to have thigh injury now.

As much as I rate the guy, he's only available for half a season if we're lucky, even then he's playing to get up to match fitness so we rarely have him at full capacity.

Opting to extend his contract will be interesting.

Don't care about the banner but throwing that sucker punch yesterday.. what a cnut.

What a cnut. Not bothered about the banner, but can’t stand people who throw sucker punches. Should be sold for that.

Extending him makes a lot of sense from a club perspective. He will be back for Hull away in just under 5 weeks and will probably partner De Ligt when he returns. With five CBs on the books (plus the availability of one or two others who can plan CB) we should be fine over a 60 fixture season.

I take silver lining from the fact that he was walking about. Hopefully, the injury isn't too bad. Not condoning the ridiculous behavior though.

Usually I agree that the best ability is availability but this man is our best CB the moment he touches the grass. I'm not thinking about selling, as frustrating as the injuries are.

Who do you even get in return. The CB market is so scarse, even Real Madrid settled for fecking Konate. I'm not convinced by Lacroix.
I’d rather sell and have a lesser player that’s constantly available. The club would be absolutely bonkers to extend his contract.
