Lisandro Martinez, renew or sell?

Why? It was a mistake to give a injury prone player a longer contract, don't think anyone would disagree with that so why would we do it again? He's a very good player when fit but he's never fit. Not like we have to do it now anyway he's contracted till 2027 with a optional year but for me personally the only way he gets renewed is if he manages a sustained period of no injuries.
Well for one lisandro martinez is a better defender than phil jones and has a better chance at having a career than jones did. Meaning that he hasn’t suffered a catastrophic injury followed by a bad medical decision which meant that jones would never be fit as a footballer again.

Well yeah but if his injuries continue it doesn't make much difference because you can't play a match from the physio table. It's pretty stupid rationale to say because we've gave Jones a extension we should give Martinez one too.

He’s a better footballer but he’s not a better defender than Jones at all. A fully fit Jones was a monster of a defender.

Giving Martinez a new contract after his injury record would be utter madness.

He's indispensable. Van Hecke and Senesi were the 2 premier league proven CBs who can play out from the back similarly, they both went to Spurs already. There are prospects who might develop into the same quality of player but might take 3 or 4 years like Jon Martin at Sociedad. Even if we went for a prospect as the eventual replacement we'd still be miles better off keeping him a few seasons while that player develops to be dependable

Well the logic wasn’t that we should give martinez an extension because we gave jones one. It was that martinez deserves one more than jones did. We also don’t have to give him an extension immediately as there is interest in him now. We still can wait and see if the injury issues are going to be persistent or if they are behind him before we make the decision.

A fully fit jones was a mythical being like the phoenix or unicorns.

I really like Martinez as a player, his ball playing ability and energy are fantastic facets of his game...but he plays less than 50% of PL games.

Think about that before proclaiming he needs to be extended and built around.

LESS than half the matches is all he has managed...and not in a small sample size but over several seasons.

United have a serious decision to make and I can't see them extending such an injury prone player again. I'm hoping that they will not repeat the same mistake.

Personally I'd sell. Certainly has his qualities and we would definitely need a like for like replacement in regards to his ball progression attributes, but with more games next season and his injury record, he's a gamble.

Move him on. Lovely passer of the ball but has too many weaknesses in the rest of his game to be a consistently great PL defender. And he's injury prone.

Most watchable centre half in the game. Brilliant player.

I just don't rate him highly as most of you. Good player without any doubt. But his defending is just not at highest level. Sure, he is a beast on the ball but his main job is defending, no? And in that he has many flaws, from positioning and air duels to one on one duels. Also, his injury record is very bad.

Anyway, i would keep him in general as good rotation option but if really good offer comes, i would sell him.

You might be right in that he has his downfalls, but in a world full of shite centre backs we’d do well to keep him. He’s great alongside a more traditional defender

if its for quoted 30-40m then it's a no brainer. He will soon have no reselling value being 28 and is injury prone which is the biggest question mark. Also he didnt have a single world class season for us. Some great perfromances here and there but never a consistent run of 30-40 games where he'd dominated and people would call him world class. He has that in him but too little in between and when he gets into form he's a joy to watch but it§s the same with him and de Light he cannot be relied upon and these players should be moved on.

Problem is it will be yet another hole to fill for us, as usually he could give us 25 games per season and we would ideally buy a starting CB not another squad player. Can we get someone for 40-50m, some ball playing CB prospect as a replacement? probably yes, but it should be a starting quality not another average player we move on for fraction of the price.

He is literally a playmaker in defense and generally a solid defender with mistakes in him like every CB in the world. In an era where attackers are encouraged to have a go at defenders, errors are more likely to happen for centre backs, like we've seen with van Dijk countless times. Not having a world class season doesn't mean we should sell him for 30m. Elanga was sold for 55m, to put transfer fees into perspective.

He's not going anywhere though. Deal with it.

He is though. Maybe not this year but he'll be gone next year when his contract is up. No way with how ineos is doing contracts will they offer him anything more than half of what he is on now with how many games he's missed

Overall he's had an excellent tournament. Wasn't at his best defensively today but still manages to have a positive impact when Argentina were trailing and going for the winner.

Effortlessly good on the ball and has great vision as a passer.

Inevitably there is a point when he becomes the weakest link (like tonight) and if you really want to compete again for real silverware, he should be let go imho.

I'd keep him.

I think his defensive issues are a bit overblown, to be honest, and on the ball he's probably one of the best centre backs in world football.

He's a mess defending counters when he doesn't win the first ball, which happened today often.

United's problem is that they don't have better, and I don't see much appetite for buying that higher caliber. So, I would keep unless that changes.

Maybe we should've taken Senesi on a free and moved Licha to midfield
Why? He’s played like once there for us and to be honest Aston Villa were just parking the bus that day. He was better than Ugarte, but that means very little.

Maybe we should sign a CB that isn’t injury prone and try signing some midfielders that actually play in midfield.

No amount of passing can justify building our defence around a centre back who's slow and easily beaten in the air.

Keep for now but next summer we need to rebuild the defence.

Who's going to buy him anyway? Let's face it, he's injury prone and has some clear weaknesses to his game.

He's likely worth more to us as a squad option this season than whatever we can get for him. We'll need depth and different types of CBs. Then we can assess if it's worth triggering his one year option in six months or so.

Was beaten for both Egypt goals today. Would be good to find a replacement, but still wouldn't sell him on without one in place.

These types of questions are always a bit skeewiff when it comes to United, as the actual scenario is more like...

Would you sell Martinez if you received a piss take offer of a few million and then also get completely ripped off a second time trying to find his replacement? erm no thanks!

As @Mike Smalling said. It is not worthy to sell him for small fee. He is useful as backup option.

But, question is - would you sell him for 40 mil for example? I would

Something has to give when you look at our defenders. None of him, De Ligt, Shaw, Mazraoui or Maguire can play twice week. If you had to bet your life on someone doing it I’d go for Maguire and he’s coming to the end of his career.

Martinez is great on the ball, defensively he’s pretty good but the lack of height and pace has implications and you have to try and compensate elsewhere. But ultimately it all comes down to the fact he plays less than half our games so the plan has to be to move on and not renew even if it has to wait until next summer.

Jones was also much better at Gurning

Ah yeah, that's a more interesting hypothetical...not sure that offer ever actually arrives, but!

He has 1+1 year left so 2 if you like, hmmm also Shaw only has 1 year...you'd have to take that £40M wouldn't you? and hope to not get ripped off buying a replacement.

40m? Probably (though I like him and he’s given us some very good moments).

But with Heaven and Yoro hopefully the future… and we have de Ligt and Maguire… and 1-2 others who can play CH if desperate, 40m could go to a midfielder and make the difference between one more or even one better.
