Yoy can't do the treble without the FA Cup. It might not be the standalone competition it used to be, but as part of the set, it is non negotiable as a compound of the greatest feat a club side can achieve in a calendar season.

You've now lost that chance and who knows when you'll get it again.
Indeed - winning the treble would have seen them equal (or arguably better given their potential points tally) our glorious achievement in 99

They’ve fecked that in the same week that they’ve also thrown away the opportunity to equal or surpass that other long standing legendary achievement in the Premier League story - The Invincibles record.

as far as the record books are concerned all they’re set to achieve is finally winning the league after 30 years *slow clap*

This season is that team’s peak. Klopp’s run them into the ground and they’ll splutter home now.

If they don’t refresh the squad, they’re showing the hallmarks of going the way of Poch’s Spurs. Rebuilding job is now on.

And before any Scousers reply, remember we know what successful teams who come to the end if their cycle look like and the traits they show, we had about four to five of them during Fergie. Your last one was what, 30 years ago?
That's the most likely scenario. The winter break ironically caused more problems than it solved. It's almost like they were just powering along through sheer will and desire and the break allowed them time to suddenly feel all the tiredness. Right now many of us would happily take some good football for the rest of the season even if we lose a couple along the way.

The hilarious thing, is that Klopp was actively looking to get knocked out earlier on. But last night he was trying to win, having realised a treble may be on.

A single league won't get you into an all time great it'll always sit below doubles and trebles. You had a great chance for a treble, basically being able to rest plAyers for the last 6-8 games in the league most likely. Instead you need to get your heads back on to not go out in europe and have what will be a strange last ten games despite winning the league.
Huh? He was trying to win by leaving out Salah and Alisson and playing a couple of the youngsters ahead of other senior players? It was a team that could potentially do the job on a good day, but was unlikely to do it especially away from home. And you don't have a "great chance" when you're only in the 5th round of a knockout competition. Still a whole bunch of good teams left in the competition at this stage.

But surely, we're allowed to not be fussed about the FA cup and the treble? If Utd remain the only English team to ever do the treble, it won't matter a bit to most of us if we start winning the league regularly again. And @Megadrive Man said nothing about the treble in his post. He just listed what he thinks are the priorities for the club.

You look at the other lineups you've played in the fa cup and you look at last night. (Ignore the world club cup clash one). That was a competitive lineup.

Get through chelsea and it opens up. Especially with you being able to rest everyone for the later league games.

The league was settled so early that just the league will bizarrely seem a bit underwhelming when more was up for grabs.

Down the list of priorities, but still played VVD, Fabinho, Mane, Gomez, Robertson and brought strong players off the bench?

Gtfoh, you don't throw Salah on when a game is lost unless you're going for it.

There's no disputing that the FA Cup is a shadow of its former glory as a standalone trophy, but it is absolutely vital in cementing a once in a lifetime side, so his point was a bit near-sighted given, just a few games back, Liverpool were on to match our greatest ever feat as @sugar_kane stated.

Your team is founded on a hell of a lot of graft, which in turn will generate a lot of cumulative fatigue. Unless you can supplement the attackers, stretching what you do over even a couple more seasons is going to be tasking in the extreme. There's also the issue of having to pay Mane and Van Dijk what they're now worth or having their heads turned.

You have challenges incoming that are part and parcel of being top dogs that you have not been party to for literal decades; it'll be hard going just keeping the team together and happy, so legacy is something I'd hold out on until you've got 2 in the bag.

You're no doubt a fixture at the top of the league for the foreseeable, but your version of Spurs impasse is not unimaginable - that being, do you enter a higer band of the market or risk your players being picked off by others?

Now Atletico needs to come through and the end of the season will be bearable
100%. If Athletico can do the job here, Pool will have 2 months of football for nothing really. The league is won, nothing to play for.

I hope Simieone comes out with a masterclass!

No we weren't. I understand why Utd fans would want us to have thought this way so that (i) you can say we're arrogant after one good season in the league and (ii) we'd be disappointed now, but let's be honest here. There's a reason why only one team has done the treble. It's insanely difficult and you need to be consistent across three competitions, two of which are knockout in the business stages. What part of Liverpool's FA cup exploits under Klopp in 4 years even remotely suggested that we have a good chance to win this thing? The only time I would think that we're on to match the frigging treble would be if we'd already won the league and were in the FA cup and CL finals.

Can't argue with this. :nervous: Forget "couple more seasons". I'll be worried about next season with AFCON right in the middle of our favourite month of January.

Incredible. Within the last few days they've gone from potentially being on par with Uniteds' treble winning side or the Arsenal Invinvibles, but now they'll be remembered as a Ranieri Leicester or a Di Matteo Chelsea.

Bottle jobs.

No idea what Klopp is doing tbh.

He should have rested the whole first team vrs Watford for the game against Chelsea.

League is wrapped up, no need to constantly play his best 11 in every league game like hes been doing all season.

I honestly dont understand the thinking behind this. The league is won except the formality. Last night should have been a bigger game than the one on the weekend. Why not play the strongest team last night, then rest some on the weekend (its bournemouth at home) and then it gives the players who didnt play a week to think about Atleti second leg.

Its bizarre priorities. Even if Club world cup was high on the priority list, that has been over since December and should be so far back in the minds of the club. I can understand saying that was higher on the priority list than the League cup. But Klopps attitude towards the FA cup makes absolutely no sense. Its not even like the FA cup match was 3 days before the CL and you wanted to rest players for one. You still could have had strong teams in both games.

And given the number of players who started and then came off the bench to try and salvage it, again it makes no sense. Its not like he was trying to just throw away the tie altogether. Bizarre.

It's the FA cup!

It's way down on our list of priorities. I was amazed at the strength of the side we put out tonight considering the last round.

The League, Champions League and Club World Cup are the priority this season.

It's sad to say but the FA cup is barely even relevant anymore.

I bet most United fans would take 4th place over winning the cup?
It's the FA Cup. It's a major trophy and you didn't deserve to win it having boycotted the early rounds. Fair enough, you had a fixture clash so put the kids out against Everton, but the replay against Shrewsbury, when you had no games, no clash, and you were all on a beach, its quite frankly discraceful and disrepsectful to everyone concerned, regardless of the result.

You saying "it's only the FA Cup" is hilarious, I bet you also posted "I didn't want to remain unbeaten anyway", or "we didn't want to win the league last season anyway" This little period of sucess under Klopp will be measured on major trophies, and the FA Cup is one of them. You'll be measured against other great teams. Arsenal are the invincibles, United are the treble winners. Liverpool? Looking more like Di Matteos' Chelsea or Ranieri's Leicester at this rate.

It's incredibly difficult to win the famous treble you know. Have a look around the history books. The FA Cup was the smallest of our cups in 1999, and it would have been for you this season. But you crashed out.

That just proves the point that Klopp wanted to go undefeated in the PL.
Then when that was gone, he played a strong team in the cup last night As he thought he could do the treble. Now that has gone.
He tried to be too clever and now hes acting like a German cheerleader.

You say that, but putting the kids out against Shrewsbury in earlier rounds is one thing, but come the quarter finals, Klopp took it very seriously, they and Chelsea were practically full strength at full time. Had both Liverpool and Chelsea put the kids out last night , then i'd understand your arguement.

About the same time old Wembley got closed down.

It used to be *the* match of the season because it was the only one televised. Now you have matches on everyday of the week.

Wonder how they will do next season though, are they a spent force or will the continue to dominate?
Not saying it will happen but something to watch out for, Klopp's Dortmund side were amazing for a couple of years and then fell off a cliff.

Liverpool fans saying they didn't care about the FA CUP? Just a week ago they I heard quite a few Liverpool fans talking about treble.

I hope they realise a treble is CL, PL, FA cup not Super cup, PL, Club World Cup.

Can't explain Klopp's thinking at all. Watford I can understand, of course we were going for the record. Why wouldn't we? Maybe that tired out some of our first teamers? And now Klopp is playing catch up with fitness.

With Atleti coming we really need to rest TAA some more, Salah, Mane, Robertson and specially VvD against Bournemouth. I'd take that chance as City are playing Utd next day.

I'm sure its been said, but you won't find a single Utd fan who would swap a record points total in 1999 for the treble. It didn't even cross anyones mind to think about points then, it was just about winning the league, and every other competition we entered.

Its the mentality I dont understand. Even some Liverpool fans I know are saying 'well Klopp didnt want to be there' or 'Klopp doesnt care about the trophy'.

Then why not just play the kids again like last round and let the other dude take charge? Klopp mentioned he wanted to win, but made changes and justified it (kinda) with Chelsea getting injuries. But then he starts half a team of first teamers and brings on strong important players anyway who could have just as well picked up an injury chasing goals.

I know its justification from Pool fans it seems.

Ok yes, at last (I guess). I know most fans will back their manager (especially when success is coming your way), but Ive seen too many Liverpool fans justifying what happened last night. Bournemouth is a nothing game compared to last night and next week for your lot (especially with the undefeated record gone, which is just a bonus record but thats it)

Isn’t not playing well but still grinding out the results the hallmark of a great side? Our 08-09 league season was basically that, and we never turned it on in Europe either except the semis against Le Arse.

Also when does the cull go into effect? Still many Scousers roaming about here.
Not every single game.
And we were quality in 08-09?

Cull is when they win the league :)

I like Klopp and I think he would have made a great United manager. However, if I was a Liverpool fan I’d be absolutely livid at the way he has handled this. The league is won barring an implosion not yet seen in the history of football. To throw away the FA Cup and treat it with such disdain would frustrate me as a Liverpool fan. This season was a real chance to make history, and you’ve blown it. Ultimately you’ll limp towards the title and be remembered along the second tier of premier league winners.

To be fair aswell, Liverpool have looked shite for months. They've somehow won a lot more than they should have, and they look almost burnt out.

If I were Klopp, I'd be lining up 2-3 top drawer signings to revamp this side, if they keep playing like this next season, scraping wins and defending this badly, they'll struggle for top 4.

Ha I get what you mean. On Football Manager I literally just played the kids in the league if I'd won it by a big margin, then save the big guns for the big games. Probably caused a massive row when playing teams in the relegation zone etc. The gap narrowed quite a bit but was great for developing the young'uns!

Klopp seemingly not too bothered about the cups this year is a bit strange considering how far ahead they are in the PL. Resting players in the odd PL game wont make a difference for them. If i was a liverpool fan id be raging they didnt focus on just getting through the round. I mean, 3 more games and they could have had another trophy.

Nothing says domestic domination more than PL and an FA cup trophy. But hey, it aint for everyone.

Remember how "next year is our year" was the running joke for so long? Well they were finally right in 2018, because 2019 was their year. Back to normality now. Van Dijk will have his agent on the phone to Barca before his title medal is even tucked away in his pocket. Has Klopp ever managed to rebuild a good side before, or do they burn out and plummet like his old Dortmund team? The Slippy One could be in his place a lot sooner than we think.

He was the same way at Dortmund. He asks a ridiculous amount from his players and doesn't know the meaning of squad management. His teams deliver in the first years before they burn out and fall off a cliff. He cant rotate because, well, have you seen their bench? We all know it will happen at Liverpool just by looking at how they play and how little rotation they have, we just hoped it would happen before he won the league.

I've heard big Virg is off to Juve in the summer, apprently its a done deal (depends how much you believe ITK's though!).

Could this be Dortmund dropping like a stone MK2?

They've been great in the league this year but as a fan I'd prefer how City won the league comfortably over how Livepool have. The manner in which City won it in 11/12 must have been incredible for their fans. Winning it after 30 years is obviously a reason for cheer for Livepool fans but having it all but won in November/December with everything being a forgone conclusion is just really really dull IMO.
