I am surprised to find Barthez listed with Schmeichel, Van Der Sar, and David De Gea. Barthez had a great first season, but he was otherwise eccentric.

I agree with you about Kuszcak and Romero. I don't really remember Raimond Van Der Gouw. I was too young.
Barthez was a shame. We had our share of dross to but we have had three world number ones in the same time period

This thread kinda loses some credibility because Reina was a very good goalkeeper. Remember when they were celebrating his golden glove trophies, in addition to their annual net spend and “next year is our year” trophy hauls?

You didnt read the OP. I mentioned him. Still doesnt forgive three decades of not having a world class goalie

I read it. Not bothered enough to argue this, but I think Reina certainly qualifies a quality Keeper and am not willing to get drawn into another boring as tits argument on what world class means. Just think many, maybe most, people would think back to Reina as their last quality GK.

I think what’s far more interesting is that I peeked briefly at Rawk after last nights’ debacle. They all seemed to be calling for their 3rd GK to start. Somebody called Ward. Things have gotten desperate for the Klopptomaniacs.

I've always heard Grobbelaar's name in my head as I imagine Boycie from Only Fools and Horses would say it.

Dunno why.

Make a PL era Liverpool allstar squad and it's quite mediocre overall especially if you don't include players which are more affiliated with other clubs (Suarez, Masch...)
What? Does that mean you wouldn't include Ronaldo in a United all star squad because he's more affiliated with Real?

Agree, Reina was great. Not exactly world class, but not that far off. Apart from him though, miserable bunch.

Is it really that hard to sign a reasonable keeper? Yes no world class keepers are available now but surely a romero level dependable keeper can be signed for 30 million or less with some proper scouting. I wonder what they really thought they would get for the 4 million plus they spent on karius. An over aged reserve team player?

think Reina won the golden gloves during his time at the club...that had a lot to do with Rafa's tactical approach though

very good shot stopper who usually made 3 or 4 high profile mistakes a season

Other than Reina and Friedel that list is depressing to look at.

Liverpool’s attack is dangerous, very dangerous. Probably better than even when they had Suarez as they’re not reliant on one player every game. But for years they’ve had a cack defence and you can’t help but wonder how confident they must feel when the man behind them couldn’t even catch a cold.

Liverpool's current situation is similar to when we kept bouncing between Tim Howard (who actually had a superb first season) and Roy Carroll.

Thank god we managed to get in Edwin after that.

It means Liverpool didn't have that many quality players in recent years and lost a significant number of them to other clubs after a while.

Reina was always a bit of a clown even when he was decent. Then he went full time clown mode in his last couple of seasons so they got rid.

They've had some good keepers on that list, Reina probably the better one. Think Liverpool have missed having a really top keeper and defence as their midfield and strikers have been good enough but the rest keeps letting them down.

Reina isn't top goalkeeper but he's a proper quality keeper who is good enough to play for a team who wants to challenge for major trophy, basically he does his job & has consistency. Liverpool needs at least his level if they want to upgrade their current keepers. Anything lower than Reina's level will still be the same keeper problem. That list looks shocking, sums up why you need a good goalkeeper to win the league.

Friedel wasn't that great for them, they rotated him and James and David James was the more solid of the two.

He only became a great premier league keeper when he turned up at Blackburn.
Turned into a superhuman against us in particular, that fecker.

Got another one - Pegguy Arphexad. Rumored to be a pornstar at the time, managed to get 4(?) appearances and 6 trophies with Liverpool.
Just read his former teammates comments about his third leg

Safe to say we can exclude Ronaldo from any United XI then?
With nearly 300 apps & more than 100 goals, over 6 seasons....winning 3 EPLs, 1 CL and 1 WCC?

Suarez had 133 apps, 82 goals in 4 seasons. Mascherano had 2 goals in 139 apps over 5 seasons. Both winning fack all.

Fair to say that Ronaldo had an influence on his club and his club, an influence on him. Your club, nowadays, espouses mediocrity like it's going out of fashion.

Reina was top class in his prime - turned shit at the end. The rest have been poor.

Mignolet is an absolute soft dope and should have been gone years ago.

Reina was the best.

To be fair, even the likes of Begovic, Schmeichel, Butland and Forster would be better than Mignolet and Karius. It’s baffling that they’re not even in for these “solid” keepers, let alone a world class one like Oblak, Handanovic or Leno.

it's absolutely baffling that mignolet has over 200 appearances for us. Wouldn't have lasted more than a season at any equivalent club. Think he is the worst player we've ever had to be in the first team for that kind of time.

Still can't believe we extended his contract the day after he did this:

Should have kept Brad Friedel.
He didn't make a good start to his Liverpool career. Only established himself as a proper PL level keeper after he got older. I remember when they first bought him. For some reason, my 13 year old self was amazed that an American was playing in the PL.

Yeah, I think what this thread forgets is that list really just reflects Liverpool in the PL era. Their players in every position would be sinilar. They've been a pretty average team and outside of a couple of freak seasons have been nowhere near the top.

Reina while not spectacular, was a very reliable good keeper. Dudek was hit and miss, his high was very high, but more often than not, he was mediocre.

The others were shit shit shit.

there's a video right after this one that shows his mistakes at the club. hilarious to look at, although I'm sure depressing for you.

EDIT: Not to mention he was in goal for that debacle against in Stoke in Stevie's last game.
forgot about the one he let run out for a corner because he needed so much time to think. He lives in his own fecking head - not in the game.

What Reina had, besides ability on the ball, was anticipation and willingness to leave his line. He made a lot of saves look unspectacular because he was there early to minimise the danger.

These are wholly non-existent qualities in mignolet. He's dogshit.

They should without doubt have been able to get two better options than Mignolet and Karius. I think as much as anything stubbornness of both Rodgers and Klopp, insisting they could see something in their men everyone else was missing, has stood in the way of them addressing this issue.

However I think there is also truth in this:

think Reina won the golden gloves during his time at the club...that had a lot to do with Rafa's tactical approach though

Reina is head and shoulders above their current options but he played behind a properly competent and drilled defensive unit. On the other hand Mignolet can't do right for doing wrong, partly because of glaring deficiencies in his game, but partly because his nerves and confidence must be shredded playing behind that defensive six. Can and Wijnaldum let a ridiculous amount of midfield runners through, the back four looks poorly drilled, the fullbacks struggle to stop crosses and the centre backs are making poor errors. It truly must be a nightmare for any keeper to play behind that, let alone two who are clearly not up to the job.

Liverpool's keeping issue is similar to ours between Schmeichel and VdS but what's going on further in front of their net is as much of an issue as who is between the stick in my opinion.

I think if anything, mignolet and karius shred the nerves of those behind him. VVD has been screaming for the keeper to come out more often - they love standing on their line and expecting others to deal with everything else except reflex saves. Also shows how little talk our other defenders do though. Nevermind the fact that we have such fragile keepers, they need talking to rather than adopting responsibility and talking to their defenders.

It's a theme all over that no one can really trust a team mate to have it covered though - and no one really covers for others. If one person makes a mistake, we're wide open. This is what I liked about Sakho - He could clean up other people's mess besides his own job. Matip had some of the same when he joined, but it's been seen less and less. Not a single midfielder who does that though. Hamann and Mascherano did it all the frigging time. Lucas too before his legs went. Standards have simply dropped. Idiots like Moreno who just go into standby mode until his nearest man receives the ball at which point he goes 'ooh boy, I sure do hope I get to slide into a tackle on this one'.

Fair point, I hadn't thought of it the other way. Van Diyk having just come in is a key indicator of your point if he's screaming at the keeper to do something. Your second par backs up the point I made that the current back six aren't doing their jobs properly (they certainly weren't this weekend which is mostly what I'm basing my criticisms on) but as we're in a keeper thread it's fair to point out the inescapable truth that the buck stops with the keepers not being good enough.

Reina, Friedel and Dudzek were good (not wc but still very good). The rest were terrible. Even now they've bought Karius even though they had 75m to spunk on VVD.

I remember a young David James being decent, he had a good spell at Liverpool, but started to regress a bit around 98, and became a bit of a journeyman after that, never really fitting in anywhere. Picked it back up at Portsmouth during those 2 seasons when they were pretty good.

And he got to wear this, which might just be the GOAT GK shirt template:

His best at Liverpool was on a par with Brad Friedel IMO, with Reina being a bit better than both.
