Lucas Paquetá | Charged with misconduct (allegedly deliberately getting booked)

Considering everything going on in football I feel a lifetime ban is harsh for a idiot like that. They could take 75% of his wages for 5 years and that would still be a deterrent and not ruin a idiots life for a stupid decision. Football authorities do do everything imaginable to make footballers as unwise to life as humanly possible, they share some responsibility in society producing these idiot millionaires.

By intentionally getting yellow carded he's also put other players at risk of injury when he goes sliding in, not to mention that it's highly unlikely that if he pulled the scam off once he would just stop there.

How can you blame this on anyone else other than him? He's not an "idiot", he's a crook!

You don't have to be that clever to realise that people from your own home town betting on you to get carded is a ridiculously stupid thing to do.

He really should get a lengthy ban.

But football really needs to look at itself and the amount of gambling companies they have in terms of sponsorship at clubs on tv etc.. every game is wall to wall gambling ads before, at half time and after. They even offer live match odds updates on some channels during the games.

Appreciate that my comment could be interpreted like that but I didn't mean to say he isn't to blame for his actions. Obviously he should be punished, perhaps in the manner other cheats (dopers) are, I just feel a lifetime ban is extremely harsh. This generation of footballers have now been inundated with gambling ads every minute of football they have consumed since being toddlers. Everyone professionally involved in football has their fingers in that pie. It's silly to think you can give an entire generation of young guys only the most basic of actual schooling, train them to think and speak like puppets, and then expect stuff like this not to happen regularly.

There’s a different between gambling and match fixing though. If he was placing bets on his team to win then I’d have sympathy. He’s effecting the outcome of matches by what he’s doing.

Yeah but the entire premise of the gambling industry is to take advantage of the addicted gamblers. So I can see a young guy coming to the conclusion that taking advantage of them through him isn't all that morally reprehensible. I'm not saying he deserves sympathy. I'm saying I don't agree with a lifetime ban as a proportionate punishment. Anyone is free to have a different opinion (Should go without saying :D).

The more I think about it the more I'm of the opinion things like this should be settled by proper courts as the fraud cases that they are, and that footballing authorities should not have a say in the verdict.

It's not really one stupid decision. It's multiple stupid decisions. The rules in football are quite clear. It's not a simple case of gambling here like Toney/Tonali etc. This is match fixing of sorts.
