We need to upgrade on him. I hoped a few months back we would buy an LB. Tierney and Firpo just moved unfortunately. Next summer hopefully, Chilwell would be nice
Yea, they just did. Now we will get to see if they are even as good as Shaw.

If he could attack like Robertson down that flank and put a cross in half as good as him, then I'd be more than happy. Unfortunately he can't so tbh I think we should upgrade.

As others have said he doesn’t do enough. Doesn’t have the engine!

Big season for him. We will need to sign a LB no matter what next summer so it’s either a 1st teamed or a backup

I know the weight jabs are old.

But he really does look heavy. Much heavier than a man who has unlimited access to a gym and who’s profession it is to be fit.

It makes me wonder about his ambition

He cannot cross to save his life. Often in good positions but too often he simply passes it back.
That's the most frustrating part! He works well to get into good positions but there's no final product, instead of trying to cross or beat his man he passes back to winger or whoever is near him. He's capable of overlapping and getting into the box but does that so rarely.

He wasn't our best defender yesterday but let's give him some leeway here, he picked up a few niggles in pre season so he's not fully fit. He does have to improve this season, if he regained the form when he first signed then we'll be very hard to break down.

POTY last season. Yikes.

Luke Shaw can't even prove he a better than Ashley Young at this moment in time. Many might disagree but I don't think the gulf between Shaw and Young is that great. Both are not ideal but right now I think Young is a safer option defensively.

I hope Dalot can become our LB, that is the best option going forward until we can sign someone else.

Same excuses for what 5 years ? He's not good enough period.

Yes there's room for improvement, like our midfielders and attackers. We just kept a clean sheet at home against a top 6 club, those were a rarity last season. Ole and the coaches will make sure the same mistakes don't keep happening. Let's just enjoy the result and look forward to Wolves, it's one game out of a long season.

No he wasn't great yesterday but he's the best we have atm. I would persevere with him rather than play Young. Dalot maybe, but yes, I would stick with Shaw.

Shaw is terrible in all honesty. Can't pass with his right, and slow at releasing the ball he usually has to run with it and tap it a few yards to left winger and it drives me nuts as Martial and Rashford are already well covered by defenders at that point. Too heavy to ever have any mobility for long periods.

He is holding us back from 20 team goals a season. No doubt about that.

Most of our play gets funnelled through the talent we have down the left side and he shows no impetus, no urgency, no desire, no energy, no creativity, no cunningness and no skill whatsoever in creating DANGER for oppositions in the positions he takes up.

There is endless clips like that one above where instead of that he just lazily plays it into oppositions feet with no creativity whatsoever. Every. Single. Game.

Just like getting rid of Lukaku would add 10-15 goals surplus to our team tally - so would getting rid of Shaw with someone with any shred of attacking adventurism

Pathetic. Unacceptable at this level.

Sad how its gone for him. He had so much potential but its gone backwards really quickly sadly. We need a replacement asap.

Really surprised we didn't go in for Chilwell.

Was really impressed by him last season vs us at Old Trafford.

He'd be a clear upgrade.

agree 100%

We missed a trick in not going for Tierney = 25m, about 80k a week, technically much better, can beat a man

We should have got Tierney for 25m. That's peanuts in this market. Even bloody Rose would be an upgrade.

Don't like Dalot on the left as he loses his best quality, his right foot cross. So it'll be Shaw all season. He doesn't even need to do anything with a lot of quality, just sprint wide to occupy the full back but he doesn't even do that. Just gets a to the edge the area and stops.

People in this thread jumping on the band wagon because others start saying he is rubbish. He is not actually that bad and Chelsea was only the first game of the season so there is going to be rustiness. He didn’t get player of the season for nothing, the coaches and players see him every day. I would trust them over people on the caf every day of the week.

Look how bad most of the Chelsea team were on Sunday, and how bad most of our team were the first half.

Shaw may not be great but he is good enough for now. Especially when we can’t afford to spend a fortune on another full back when we need a RW and 2 CM’s, which will cost a fortune.

Anyone think Williams from the academy could take his place?
Stuff like this is what I am talking about. Christ almighty, the kid is 18 and not even played 1 competitive game at the highest level. Shaw is an England international and player of the season.

The way people go on is as if every academy player at the minute is the CO92. Seem to be wanting the whole team to be swapped with the youth team. We would be relegated.

He’s the obvious upgrade in our back 4. We need a LB in one of the coming windows, but can’t see us wanting to splash massive money on one. From what I’ve seen of our scouting, Ole probably won’t look beyond Chilwell, who will cost a fortune.

Yeah that narrow-minded approach is what has saddled us with the likes of Wan Bissaka and Maguire. fecking Ole...

I view Shaw as a solid player. Nothing special but not really a liability. I’m fine if we don’t sign a replacement in the summer because I’d say there’s three new positions that need addressing before LB.

Hoping he can progress but he just seems really thick when coming to his attacking contribution. Doesn't know when to overlap, or with what speed (sometimes there's space ahead that he can break into and catch the defence out yet doesn't). He's so quick, you'd think it would be the other way round where he's always looking to bomb on and get in behind too often but no. And no, this isn't just based on Chelsea.

Hopefully he can develop as he's still so young, but it seems he needs to be taught some of the basics here. One thing about the Chelsea game, I know it's early days but almost glad that he's our biggest worry in defence. Big difference from last season.

Actually I wonder how quick he really is now-a-days. It's been a while since he really let loose and I can't understand why. Robertson does it every game, maximum sprints, he's a fantastic player and really great to watch. Or frustrating, since he's not a United player.

Pre injury Shaw had fantastic acceleration and top speed, the lot.

Feel like it's a stamina issue. He never really lets go 100% as he's scared about not having the puff to recover again.

IMO he's just too big for a fullback that's required to run up and down all day long. I think he should be converted to a CDM as he's actually very good at tackling/heading, he's a great passer and his acceleration can get him out of pressing situations fairly easily.

Ah I see the anti-Shaw brigade are out in full force. Also those suggesting Chilwell being an upgrade are out of your minds.

On that running in behind thing it is really weird. I mean in that Chelsea game there were a few times he did run in behind and he seemed like the obvious ball and he wasn’t played in. Then there are times when you’re looking at it for example when he and Martial passed it back and forth for a bit and I’m thinking why aren’t you attacking the space now.
People that say he doesn’t run in behind aren’t watching closely enough as he does quite a bit it maybe just doesn’t register with people because they are watching the ball instead but he does need to get better and the team needs to still improve and he really needs to work on his delivery and mix them up other than just trying to cut it back all the time.

How do people suggest we strengthen the LB spot? Luke Shaw is great, who would you have instead?

Chilwell is overrated I think.
Not for me, he is a clear upgrade on Shaw.

Just because he is English, doesnt mean he isnt a very good LB. Maguire got roasted on here by a lot of people as well throughout his Leicester time.

Bonus points for already knowing Maguire perfectly, they both would obviously be a great pair on that left side
