Might be worth making him available come January. He clearly has no desire to remain here.
Was also one of the players rumoured to have been heavily involved with leaking stories to the press along with the dressing room gossiping linked with Henderson and Lingard.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
We conceded 44 goals in Luke Shaw world class seasons , some stats could prove most of the goal conceded came from his side. Without his PR team hyping him up at that season , no one would even put him as top 10 LB. We had BS writing about how he prove Mourinho wrong , even when he ends with 0 winner medal, at the same time , Ben Chillwell help Chelsea in winning their UCL. I think majority of people just fall into his PR hype including you, Ashley Young had better season than him when we finished second, 81 points.
So because the team as a whole did better, it automatically makes each individual player better? I guess the likes of Cleverley really were better than Gerrard.

As for Ashley Young, I've always said people forget how damn good he was in the first half of 17/18. Not quite as good as Shaw was in 20/21, but he probably was the best performing leftback in the league (I remember him absolutely pocketing Salah to an almost embarrassing extent). However, just like the previous point with Lukaku, Young also fell away and was very average in the second half of that season and could easily have been dropped. Shaw maintained his level for almost the entire season, bar a slight drop in the last month where he was still playing well but not the brilliant form he'd been showing previously. Which also negates your point about falling into PR, as it was towards the end of the season where the media started really hyping him up, but those of us who couldn't care less about media knew that he'd actually been even better throughout the rest of the season. Saying that he wouldn't even make the top 10 shows you have an incredible bias against him as surely even his harshest critics would admit he was fantastic that season. Easily the best season any of our fullbacks have had since Evra.

It wasn't world class season, it was purple patch season if we based on his whole time here as United. You don't expect purple patch season to happen again in the future. Time to get rid in winter transfer window before he turn to be our 2nd Phil Jones.

The season before last he was absolutely world class and he was player's player of the season twice in three years (20/21 and 18/19). At his best he is world class, but he's also massively inconsistent though, which we know. How much of that is down to his drive (or lack thereof), fitness, injuries, different managers, overall team form etc...is not clear.

When he is on his game, he is brilliant and can own the left side. Arguably, was a huge part of driving the team forward when he was playing well the season before last. However, we should try and move him on. He still has value in the market and I think that there are teams out there that would still rate him enough to pay a reasonable transfer fee for him. Refresh the squad with that money. Have fernandez as backup if he does well on loan or buy a younger player. Free up wages and invest in other areas of the squad. We need to stop being scared of moving players on because of what if scenarios in our heads on whether someone might come good for a couple of seasons in the future. It led to the accumulation of the deadwood in this squad that we are perpetually trying to clear out now.

You don't get stats like that if you're play has been shambolic, you just don't.
Two good seasons for Shaw at United. At his best he's excellent but the guy simply doesn't have the work ethic. His United has to be on its last legs now. Up to him to prove that he's good / bothered enough.

My main point is he's a great backup to have. Why would we get rid of a talented player? Doesn't make sense to me

Small potatoes baby. That's a pittance to Man United. We turnover something like 500m a year
You don’t really want your backup earning more than twice of your starter. Plus your starter will end up wanting as much as the backup. His stock is still fairly high. You could probably sell him on for a decent amount.

I don't get why people want to sell players the second they are no longer starters. You need a squad. You need 2 players per position. Good players. It's the same with Rashford on the wing. They assume Sancho and Antony will be the 2 main guys so say "sell Rashford" when in reality, we need all 3 to rotate with each other and he impact subs and challenge each other.

It would be a big boost for us if we reintegrated Shaw as a valuable squad role and he got fit again. Him and Malacia could push each other and learn from each other, and keep each other fresh. It's a very good LB situation we have, selling Shaw would be dumb.

Because we want to get rid of a 150k pw player, when his stock is not rock bottom, and probably try to get someone with same output, but cheaper.

I am not necessarily saying sell all backup players, but it is always a choice between selling someone who is sellable or keeping the player in the team till they become unsellable.
Specifically with Shaw, his contract is 2023 + 1 option. So this is a good time to decide to keep/sell. Keeping would mean, we offering him a new contract which will be for considerable amount over 150k.

Why would it be for a considerable amount over 150k? He would be challenging for a starting spot at best. He wouldn't have better options or make more money elsewhere. We just keep him on that salary and it's fine. He's a very talented player who has injury problems but he can provide a lot for us still. Who would you suggest we buy "who can provide a similar output". Someone like Telles, because that went well? Transfers aren't definite, everyone is expensive these days. Malacia was a great deal, but our situation is best to just leave as is and then develop some of the younger guys to eventually move Shaw on rather than selling him now. That wouldn't be a good idea given his talents, what he can provide, him being at a very good age still.

Priority should be to replace players who aren't good enough for their roles, and address problem positions. Not create a problem in the squad for no reason. Once the squad is "complete" and "set" with 2 good players in every position basically, then sure, you start addressing that side of things. But we are a few years away from that.

He looked incredibly slow when he came on, which he relied on as he didn't and will never have the positional sense or awareness to make a top defender. He's finished at United.

There was an odd moment where we pressed one of their defenders near their corner flag. There was perhaps the opportunity of winning a corner or a throw in high up the pitch. Instead, Shaw seemed to lose patience and just kicked it out for a goal kick.

It's not the first time he has had such brain fade moment. He is prone to such dumb moments.

Looked so slow. Please get rid of him. Not fit.
I thought he did okay. Tracked runners, got into the right positions, got to the byline once or twice. But hey. He got 20 mins after not playing for a few weeks, not sure what people were expecting.

I’m a big defender of his usually, he’s not played in a while so I’d forgive him some rustiness. But the bigger issue was he just didn’t look arsed when he came on. Didn’t really seem to make much of an effort, and given that Malacia has started to underwhelm, this was a good opportunity for him. But instead he was utterly gutless, slow uninterested and insipid.

We still need a left back, and a right back. Malacia and Dalot are decent rotation options. Shaw needs to leave.

This isn't really related to Shaw but it always amazes me how the current narrative makes people's minds up for them before they've even watched the game.

When a player is in a spell of positive perception from the fans they can do no wrong, every performance thread is full of praise for any 5/10 or 6/10 game, always a positive spin on a performance, any errors are completely ignored as long as they weren't punished by the opposition. On the flip side when you're in a spell where you're unpopular with the fans, you can go put in that same 5/10 or 6/10 performance and get absolutely slated for being useless.

He came on for 20 minutes and did fine. It's almost not even worth bumping the thread it was so unnoteworthy. Everyone is just chomping at the bit as soon as he came on to point out how unfit and unprofessional he is and were going to tell everyone in this thread how he's shit no matter what.

Hasn’t played for weeks, so you’d think he’d have spent that time slimming down. He still looks massive, though.

You can do it if you want but I don’t go around typing “yawn” at random posts. I type it when someone replies directly to one of my posts, appearing not to have read it and declaring that if I don’t agree with them I either have amnesia or am a child. Welcome to the forum, by the way.

He’s a heavy build but I don’t think he’s carrying that much extra weight. He’s not match fit. Might take him a while to get there with Malacia doing a good job (he actually did well at RB as well).

The problem with Shaw as a "backup" is he's got that Rooney like build. They never look sharp until they get a few games in a row. Thinking he's going to sit around eating burgers and then produce wonderfully lively performances raiding the left flank is probably optimistic. He looked short of fitness and confidence today to be honest.

Or maybe that’s just his built? Part of me thinks United have better physios and dieticians than on social media so I’d assume they know better

I'll never understand the build thing when you have Rooney who had a similar build for most of his career. In any case he doesn't have a typical footballer's build, but it's not like having that defines you either. All I care is if he produces or not and compared to some of the other players we've had over the years Shaw deserves more of a chance. Malacia hasn't instantly claimed the starting spot since he's played. He has his own shares of mistakes that are being downplayed. I say let the two fight for it this season and then figure it out next summer. We're already looking for so many spots next summer as well and adding another LB is not worth it.

Happy that he has made the England squad. Hope he does well in the friendlies and the World Cup as well to get a good move and earn us a good transfer fee.

Shaw, Maguire, Ronaldo, and Casemiro look like they could shed some weight.
