His performances last season after returning from injury and his first few preseason games made me think that the injuries might finally have stripped him of the ability to play at the top level, but the last couple of preseason games and now this match shows he still has it. If he can stay fit (yeah, how many times have we said that) he could well cement himself as first choice in the LCB role. Still have to protect him a bit though even with only one game a week, as he looked like he was struggling a little towards the end. I think it was just tiredness rather than a knock though.

Is it me, or if (by some miracle) he stayed injury free that he would be better off at LWB for us this season? Stressing the "injury free" notion

Don’t believe for one second he has the legs for a season at LWB. That’s very physically demanding. Not least because it’ll increase his chances of injury. LCB is the right spot for him.

Great to have him back, hope he stays fit. Rotating him and Licha as LCB are 2 quality options to have

Agreed, it was a perfect world where he wouldn't pick up an injury type of question. Massive shame for a guy who was top at the left back position when fit to have a horrid injury record.

Shaw or Licha at LCB? Think Shaw is still more mobile, better in the air, and technically excellent while Licha has a greater range on his passing and more aggression in duels.

Makes such a difference having him be aggressive. Still got flashbacks of him backing up against Saka when he was playing LB.

Did well. Credit where it’s due. If he can maintain that level of performance and stay injury free then he starts every week in that role.

Brilliant today. He looked sharp in pre-season and it’s good to see that work pay off. We know he’s a class footballer but I have to admit I’d all but written him off here.

Shaw is better at dealing with wingers than Martinez, who gets turned far too easily and is too slow. He’s probably slower now after two bad injuries.

He was immense today. Sakho is a generational player and he didn't have a sniff today because of how good Shaw was....I just pray to God that Luke Shaw stays fit because we need this man to redeem our season.

Hopefully stays fit. Having a settled back 3 will make a big difference.

Same. I had (have?) given up hope on him but today was a pretty decent performance. He had a lot of help from Dorgu though but at least he tracked runs, got tight and passed forward rather than sitting on his heels. However, I will be holding my breath to see if this continues. I recall him starting the 23-24 season well and then going back to his old ways i.e being on his heels, getting square and backtracking when faced with an attacker. The cynic is me though feels he raised his game more than usual because Tuchel was in the stands.

Just like I said in the Mount thread have been critical of him but thought he was decent today, kept Saka quiet enough and definitely looked better than last year.

Somehow he still manages to remember that he's a top player and plays like it. He was class today. After countless injuries and missed games when he decides to go at it he just looks effortlessly good.

Amorim looked at this guy in pre-season and called him world-class and Amorim usually says what he really sees. Now the issue with Shaw is that he's rarely at this level but he's got it in him. He made Saka look like a second rate RW today when usually he's right up there, arguably 2nd in the league after Salah.

Hopefully we get one of those seasons where he stays fit because fit Luke Shaw is a different animal. He was along with DeLigt brilliant today. Hopefully more to come.

I thought he was excellent today alongside de Ligt. And I far prefer de Ligt in the CCB role to the RCB role. Our tempo dropped when Ugarte and Maguire came on.

Did not expect him to be so good, pleasant surprise. Please stay injury free.

Class player when fit and on form. If only he could just stay fit it would make such a massive difference for our defensive stability.

What a player. Just a shame his career has been so hurt by injuries

Fingers crossed he actually stays fit. He goes down and Heaven takes his place which I don't like because he's simply way too limited on the ball. Shaw better stay fit until Lisandro is back available because they're the only 2 I've seen able to build from the back on that left side.

Just a class act when he’s fit

That cnut that broke his leg years ago finished his career to a degree.

I remeber LVG proclamming it the year for Luke Shaw. Then... He is a great player when fit. I feel for the guy as that injury was horrific. I was watching the game when it happened. Fingers crossed and wishing Luke all the best this year. I hope he has a great season.

Surprised me, I thought he likely was done as a player after all the injuries and time out.

Has an annoying habit of diving in randomly unnecessarily like he did a couple of times in the first half, but overall immense performance.

He's a top player when fit, such a shame recent seasons have been so hampered by injuries. I'm not holding my breath that he'll stay fit all this season, but great that we can call on him at the moment.

We know he's quality player, just a question of if he can stay fit. Probably not but if it's possible for Shaw to stay fit at least until Martinez is back, then that's something. All CBs were good today.

He was awesome. Reminded me what he is capable of when fit.

He looked capable and he might have something to prove if media reports about his senior status are true.

He’s well placed to allow us to ease in Heaven this season as we did with Yoro and Mazraoui last season.

Shaw once major international tournaments are near.

He was fantastic. Allowed Dorgu to basically play everywhere but LB. Will be really interestign to see how those two link up

What the heck? Heaven's best qualities is his forward passing and composure on it. The version of Shaw that turned up today deserves praise and whilst he's plenty capable, let's not pretend he delivers this every week.
