I felt bad for him. Bad day at the office sure but once Rashford came on he was dealing with 2 players alone. It was always going to be easy to get around him and play into the box. We've been looking at Cunha or Dorgu getting back last season and look how much more secure we looked. This is the biggest difference. Work rate off the ball is planets apart

Astonishingly terrible performance from him. For all four of their goals, he was completely absent from his LB position. Just nowhere to be found, leaving Milan's right winger completely unchallenged. All four of their goals came from his failure to even be present in his position.
Not sure why anyone should be surprised. Last season he played for a place in the world cup squad and had 8-10 days rest between games. He missed the world cup and has no competition for his place, so we are in for a masterclass of laziness.
The main thing for me is he's clearly not good enough and it's been like this for a while. He refuses or takes forever to join the attack and just adds to the lethargy in the team. His desire to close down or stop crosses doesn't exist and he has zero recovery pace, 10/10 he will just bring his man down and get a yellow instead of putting in the effort to run.
If he's our starting LB this season we will be lucky to make top 4.

The managers instructions were clearly for him to tuck in and stay as compact as possible (he was almost holding Heaven/Martinez hands at some points) which resulted in Chukwueze having all the space in the world to cross. If that was the plan why were we not more alert at the far post?? Shaw was obviously terrible but the setup around him was poor.
When you can't even be present in your position's area throughout a whole game, you have no business being a professional footballer. That was one of the very worst performances by any United player this decade. Truly inexcusable. All four of their goals were caused by him being nowhere near the LB position that he pretends to occupy. That should be the end of his career.
We have tried to replace him with some shockers. Telles, malacia, some academy players (Williams) and now Dorgu. Very pathetic attempt to upgrade that left side in the past 12 years. That's why we are now in a position where he has no competition and still has to start.

We're a week from the season's start, and it was an important friendly against our previous manager. It was by no means an irrelevant game. When someone puts in a 0/10 performance a week before the season begins, it's telling.
I think you put any LB in world football behind Rashford and they are going to have a really tough time in most games. He was fresh and he didn't track back at all. 0 tackles or blocks. Cunha is just a much less selfish player, same with Gordon
Honest question was Shaw in position for any goal today? Go and watch them back. For 2-2 Shaw no where to be seen, Maybe Rashford could have got out quicker to the left on the 3rd but again, Shaw MIA as well as Martinez really and then then the 4th is ridiculous.

He just left Chukaweze free for the first 3 goals. He had all the space in the world. It's awful, Shaw has to be replaced, I'd rather see Dorgu start there at least there's a threat going forward
There's a LB in the squad with the athleticism to provide what we need potentially but for some reason Carrick sees him as a left sided attacker. This despite him mainly playing left back in his career.

To be fair for the first three goals Milan simply created overlaps where it was 2v1 against Shaw (in fact for the second goal it was a 3v1) and he had to choose between leaving somebody completely open in the middle of the field or leaving somebody completely open in the wider areas. Each time he chose to cover the more central player who in theory was the more dangerous player. Watching it live I thought much the same as you, but watching it back shows just how ridiculously exposed we were leaving him. No matter which decision he made (whether to stay wide or cover the central player) Milan would have just went straight through whichever one he left open.
Now for the second and especially third goals he perhaps should have just covered the wide man and been screaming at the other defenders to shuffle over instead of over-committing to the other side of the field, or alternatively been screaming at the winger (Dorgu for the second, Rashford for the third) to take the wide man. But it was really a complete failure of the structure of the team. It's not like Shaw just randomly moved out of position for no reason.
That's not to say that he had a good game or try to shift all blame though. He still should have got out to the wide man faster than he did for both the second and third goals, and should have done a better job at blocking the final pass. The fourth was an attempted high press which is probably what we want him doing, but it was a half-arsed attempt that gave the ball-player plenty of time to play it forward, and then he was also slow to get back after being bypassed (although he probably wouldn't have been able to make a difference at that stage). I won't blame him for the first goal though. He was pushing higher as we were in possession, then after we stupidly lost it he still got back quite fast but had to choose between covering the easier pass to the guy open in the middle of the goal or the still-easy-but-slightly-harder pass to the wider attacker. I think he played the odds correctly there.
So yeah, it was definitely a bad game from Shaw but probably not as bad as I first thought or as bad as some are making out. The defensive positioning of our entire team was terrible and was leaving that entire side completely exposed.
He is the main reason we conceded so many goals in recent years. He always gives huge space for opponents' wingers to cross without pressure.
He shouldn't be our starting LB next season. Finding a good LB to replace hm is a must for us to safeguard top 4 next season.

Needs to be turned into backup CB. Can't do the job as fullback anymore.
