Luke Shaw | 2026/27 Performances

Yeah but he was only sprinting for 266 metres with Mazraoui 277, even Rashford made 206 m playing half the time of Shaw.
That’s even worst tbh, if he still has the speed but it’s not using it at all.
And it tracks when you watch him. He does the absolute bare minimum on the pitch. Fullback is a position that involves running up and down the pitch and Shaw knows if he runs high up he needs to make an intense sprint back so would choose not to do that. He will support attacks when he can casually jog to support the wide player.

In the event he’s high up the pitch and the ball is played behind him he always fouls the attacker even if the distance can be covered with a full sprint.

People don’t realise how much he limits us because he’s mastered the art of looking busy. Even his throw ins take forever because he’s trying to slow the game down to have a breather.

Full backs are the most energetic players in most teams and we happen to have the laziest one.

Luke can still do a job for us against weaker opponents, but we clearly need an upgrade at LB to start over Shaw in most games as he winds down his career at Old Trafford. A shame his legs are gone, but it happens to every footballer at some point. That said, given the seriousness of the injury he suffered a decade ago it’s something of miracle he ever made it back to the pitch and at pretty high level.
An argument could be made that the weaker the opponent the worse job he does. Against top teams who take the game to us he can perhaps get away with mostly sitting back and focusing on defence, and that's what was happening in most of his better games last season. The more we want to play on the front foot and push people forward, the more his limitations hurt us as he can't really bring much to the attack while still doing his defensive duties anymore.

I've always felt Shaw has this tendency to take the lazy option on the pitch. A shame the injury killed him really because prior to that he was rapid and would regularly bomb up and down the flank.

The fact he l’s been here for over a decade naturally gives him a lot more clout behind the scenes. Despite his weaknesses as a senior squad member, I imagine he still wields a lot of influence, particularly over the younger players so it’s no coincidence that there seems to be the all too familiar discontent with the manager, after all he’s overseen at least four of them during his tenure.

Doubt we can keep blaming an injury from a decade ago for the lazy play.

Mou's statements about Shaw being stupid was probably what cost him his jerb, no way Luke could let that slide.

If anything he should be converted to a CB, he offers good possession and distribution from the back but he's a liability defending open spaces, he's often caught off position and is he's either too lazy or not fast enough to get back to position. He offers building from the back but hardly any attacking threat. He doesn't overlaps enough and he doesn't have the speed to bomb the left flank to the point its actually helpful for the winger.

He's need replacing years ago, for some reason we have only signed poor left backs that haven't really been able to properly challenge him.

At this point I'd rather give the minutes to Dorgu, he's clearly not talented enough to be a winger here but has the physicality, the speed, the energy and the attitude. I think he can be molded into a good LB with proper coaching.

Obviously we need a left back, he just cant play a ton of matches this year. I do think if Baleba was playing today he would have had better cover on that goal as many LBs could be done 1 on 1 in that situation against a pacy player.

Shadow of the player he used to be but it’s not his fault he is our only LB and first choice still. A lb has to be signed before the deadline.

At least there is zero chance he gets a new contract if he continues to play like this. Need a new LB

Lost all pace but still managed to out pace Mbuemo and stopped a goal. Terrible for their goal though. He has a habit of allowing his winger far too much space, and even at his best he never had the acceleration to get back in. Silly play.

I don't even mind him being around but we desperately need another natural LB option. I do think he's still a good player but we could do with a more dynamic option out there.

If anything he should be converted to a CB
Let's stop trying to do things like this. He was a very good left back for about 3 seasons, then a world class one for 1 season, and has been mediocre for the next 5-6. He should be moved on or let go, not remodelled into another 5 foot something CB in his 30's.

Genuine injury or message to the board? It is pivotal we get good quality cover in for him this window. Hot take, I know...

He's finished. If INEOS won't sign an LB, give Harry Amass a chance. It isn't possible to be worse than Shaw. He's the worst player on the pitch every time. 0/10 performances week after week.

Needs to be a bench player, he’s offers nothing going forward and isn’t good defensively now that he has no speed
I don't even think he should be a bench option. The lack of pace will be a huge issue whenever he comes on

He did plenty, yes.

Feel people being harsh he got a beat a few times by his man it happens. He also won a few important headers first half and got back in on the Enciso chance when he had no right too.

Obviously poor for the goal, but otherwise I'm surprised with some of the criticism in here. Was getting forward a lot more than he normally was last season and was solid defensively as well (other than the goal). I do tend to think that was largely because of the opposition and have doubts he can be effective at both ends of the pitch against better opponents who will stretch the play more, but fair play I thought he had a good game today.

Agree

I'm not a big fan of Shaw but outside of one moment that got punished I thought he was decent.

Even that one mistake, at least he was trying to be proactive. Trying to quickly get at the player.

Yeh, he wasn't that bad today... Weird comments.

He got nutmeged for the goal. I'm not sure how many LBs in the league get back to that lad from that position.

Is the world class Shawberto season already that long ago?!

I'm a fan of Shaw and thought he's been a good player for us, sometimes downright amazing and amongst the best LBs in the world.

Today felt like the game when GNev decided it's time to hang up his boots

Nope. Rashy almost looked confused when Maz came on and started doing overlapping runs
Guessing neither of you actually watched the game.

He was decent today, saved us twice. He did get done for the first goal, sure he thought he was doing their winger when he impacted him but guy was a unit and did not go flying.

He also got back at the player when they broke on us, opposition just had to run straight where Shaw had to catch up and come inside. Did fantastic to make it up and put him off enough without making a foul. That’s a good bit of defending.

Made countless runs past Rashford that Rashford didn’t always take. Also that one where he was bursting in to the box and the first touch was immaculate just couldn’t get the shot off.

He has lost 2 or 3 steps from even 2 years ago, can't have a left hand side of Licha and Shaw with them this immobile.

The goal was bad but it was the run from Ensico in the first half that was really illuminating, guy is trying to hold 2 players off while dribbling, a few years back Shaw would have eaten him up, and stopped the shot getting off.

I saw more from Yoro in 5 minutes than I did from Luke Shaw.

Handed back the ball to Ipswich several times even when under zero pressure and offered next to no support. No overlap is hyperbole of course but was genuinely bad today.

He was hanging on together last season, but that game had that touch of Neville vs West Brom right before he retired. Wasn't quite that bad a performance on its own, but it does feel like he lost couple yards of pace even compared to last season, and that did cost us a goal today. On current trajectory though, I do believe that that level of drop-the-ball performance is becoming inevitable simply due to his age catching up to him, and we absolutely need to find a first team replacement for him unless we're somehow counting on Dorgu/Amass to step up on his place, which seems very risky to expect at this stage.

Weird to see people just blatantly lying to themselves. Because anyone who watched the game unless severely visually impaired should have seen that he made several overlaps.

Also if you haven’t noticed a lot of the time he is providing cover for our slow midfield and backline as he is the only one with a bit of pace and power about him.
