At the beginning of this season general consensus was that Harry was a too expensive buy (£80 million). Would you sell him now for that price?

Yes or No, please. Reasoning is most welcome.

NO.

His leadership is worth 80m on it's own. The rest is a bonus

His market value according to ability isn’t £80m but we needed him enough for that to be his value to us.

Is he worth £80m generally? No. That doesn't mean I'd sell him for £80m though. The time and resources that would be spent on getting a replacement have their own value, as does the disruption selling him would cause.

He’ll be a fine player for us and we’ll worth the money.

He’s a very good defender which has started to show, wait till someone like Mings goes for £60m and he’ll look a good deal.

Not only that but he’s a good choice as captain as well, good to see someone calm back there who can step into midfield and distribute the ball.

What is it 8 clean sheets in 10 games? Played a big part in that and I think we have the best collection of defenders in the league now, and that’s with Jones and Rojo still .

We need to forget about the price we paid. He’s a fantastic defender and will get even better.

ive been seeing a lot of maguire propaganda since April till now. Anyone know how credible this tweet is because I can’t imagine Maguire has become such a leader of the team after such a short period of time.

If true it’s nice to know that he is doing his best to keep the team spirits high at a time like this. We have so many camps French, Spanish and English. It’s hilarious trying to picture what the groupchat would look like.

80m is crazy money, but could we get a better player for 80m in today's market? No chance, at least not a guaranteed performer as he was. We can't compare his fee with those in the past.

Why is that hard to believe? We've been longing for a leader, which makes the space to lead in even greater. Players also spoke about how Bruno lead after short time

OGS didn't make him club captain because he's tall and tackles in training. There's a genuine leader there, and I for one am absolutely stoked that he's commited his future to Manchester United.

A lot is/was made of the fee but I wouldn’t sell him for 80m if another club offered it.

Not my money anyway. He’s our best centre half by a mile, so who cares how much it was?

I don’t know how credible it is, but I believe it. This team has severely lacked leaders, we had Valencia and Ashley Young as our previous two captains, and neither of them are really captain material and only got the role because there was nobody better and they were the longest serving players still left. Before that we had Rooney and Carrick as captains, fantastic players but I would also argue not ideal captains. That’s four different captains in 6 years! We had four in 22 years between Robson and Keane, and that includes Cantona who only had the armband for one season.

Point is, we’ve severely lacked true leaders in recent years. Embarrassingly so. Even without seeing behind the scenes you can see how Maguire has stepped in to the role, he’s a clear leader and I’ve no doubt would be capable of immediately assuming a leadership role. It’s not like he has senior players still hanging around.

Not worth 80m because of his lack of pace. He will probably get found out in the big games unless we get a much faster CB pairing him.

Only issue I have with him is that he's so slow. I don't want to hear that his positioning makes up for it.

I thought he was easily worth the money at the time and still do. I'm glad the club paid what it took. When his time here is all done and dusted, I'm confident many will look back at the fee and be glad we paid it.

We’ve played City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, all big games. Maybe you didn’t watch those? When was he really ‘found out’?

Could be bullshit, but in the last few years that kind of bullshit being leaked was always negative. He’s obviously not worth £80 million, but we were always going to have to pay big money for centre back, unless we risk another £30 million on a Bailly/Lindelof type player.

My valuation is around 50M for him, if someone offered 80 I wouldn’t sell him because then we would have to get another CB and would probably spend more.

Dont missunderstand me, he’s a good defender and a leader which we were desperated for, but for worldclass money I expect worldclass players and I don’t think Maguire is there.

Wonder where the Leicester fan who was stating he wasn’t a leader and needed an experienced player like Evans alongside him to direct him, went to. Quite a few soaked that tripe up!

Worth 40-50m to me. Nothing special to be honest, but he is not bad.

If compare to our other CB in the past:
Tier 1: Stam, Vidic, Rio
Tier 2: Bruce, Pallister
Tier 3: Johnson, Berg, Maguire, Brown, Smalling, Evans
Tier 4:, Lindelof, Blind, Jones, Rojo, Bailly

But if he can show up more in couple more years, organise our defence line well, maybe he can be up there with Bruce and Pallister one day. Will have to see.

I would sell him for that money. Without question. He is 30mil defender imo.
WUM surely? Even in a COVID apocalypse he’s worth more than that.

Young, British, starter for England NT - these factors increase the value before you even evaluate his ability. He’s far better than many give him credit for.

Tell me a better CB is available, at 60m, and 1-2 years younger.

Upamacano 21 years old and £54.7 million release clause

Maguire was worth around £55 million like AWB and Bruno. Personally I think he's not as good as either of them

Edit - I should add that when we were linked with AWB I was happy. I had also expected us to go for Maguire in the summer while we were playing last season. I did think that £55 million for a great defensive fullback was a bit much. But on the strength of how much he's contributed this season I think I underestimated how much he could help from RB. So I think he was worth the money and I'm happy that I was wrong that it was too much investment in a very strong defensive rightback. We clearly needed one as proven by this season

You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who will agree he's already a better player.

Why does it matter now? He's here, he's improved our defence massively and he's here until his legs go.

 . 27 is young these days? Well if it goes for Lingard then ok, Harry is young.

No, I wouldn't sell him, and it isn't to do with the price.

I thought at the time, and still do, that £80 million was expensive, but that was going to happen with whoever we tried to buy - everyone knew we were intent on bringing in a new CB so the market pushed up the price for anyone who fitted the spec. Comparing his price with van Dijk's £75m makes him look expensive, but we were never going to be able to say, "we want to pay less because van Dijk cost Liverpool less." Selling him for £80m, if a buyer made that offer, means we would break even on the deal. That's it. We would still need a new CB unless we revert back to Smalling, Bailly, Jones etc, or would pay the same or more for a replacement.

I would agree that he doesn't shout "world class", although he compares well with CBs in the rest of the EPL, with one or two exceptions (accepting the EPL is light on top CBs at the moment). He is a leader in a young team, though, which is why Ole handed him the captaincy so soon (and I suspect that was as much a consensus of the other players as it was a decision by the manager), and that is valuable in itself. He's also in his first season at Utd - being previously at an EPL club helps, but you have to allow for some settling in.

In particular, it shouldn't be underestimated how disruptive it would be to change our main CB a year after we brought in a new one, and change our captain, at a time when the pieces of the jigsaw look as if they are beginning to fit.

The big temptation, given all the media coverage, is to go for Koulibaly, probably the only CB in the same price range who is an upgrade and probably available - if that happened, I would ideally see him as a player additional to Maguire, not a replacement. It would probably mean getting a couple of other CBs off the books. His price would probably go up if we went for him , and you wonder if that has been the sticking point previously, as we've almost certainly pursued him. We're not leaking goals at the moment, though, and you wonder if it's considered a priority for the club just because Liverpool and a clutch of other clubs are said to be after him. If money was no object, he would be a great signing though, and would give us the satisfaction of denying Liverpool an "impenetrable defence".
