Maguire: I wouldn't be starting every game if I was playing bad or not playing well enough, there's a reason both managers put me in XI every game

Of all of the things he did yesterday, that hospital ball to Hannibal was the worst.

Kid just got on the pitch at Anfield and he gives him a ball like that.. what was he thinking? He wasn't thinking. He was panicking. Our captain was panicking. Again.

People seem to think that it's a one way street. Other self respecting clubs are stuck with similar players because you need to actually have a buyer that interest the player whether we are talking about wage, location or competitiveness. Who are the clubs that are going to match Maguire current wage? He isn't on massive wage but it's still higher than his level, the amount of clubs that would pay a decent fee for him and also give him a competitive contract are scarce.
Agreed. So I would not expect a high fee to defray the high salary. He is not a bad player but not United level. We just were so desperate with our initial CBs that we paid through the nose for him. He will never live up to that price tag. Hopefully we get Varane healthy and we go with him and Victor next year and bring in a CB.

FFS he actually retweeted that passing clip.

The man is clearly delusional, those are all easy passes to make when you have no one putting pressure on you.
God, I really hope we vet playerd from a psychological POV very thoroughly from now on. Maguire is without a doubt a very delusional man

The problem with this squad is too many players have the mentality Maguire has shown here. They are incapable of looking at themselves. All the bullshit Rashford says about being his own biggest critic is just that...bullshit.
Maguire's eyes are all over the room during the interview. He can't look at the interviewer with a straight face.
Well said, another example is the quotes Pogba gave in the latest international break talking about how he is moved all over the place and how it's affected his football.
Whilst he has a point when it comes to that, at no point did he even mention his shortcomings as a player. Many of our players live in a bubble, surrounded by "yes men". They don't realize how terrible they are

Pogba has always believed the hype and crap written about him, its never ever his fault.

I actually can't stand this guy. Cut our losses and get rid of him this Summer. He's gutless, doesn't take any responsibility for his actions. A useless captain.

Logically, he won't walk out next season as United captain will he?

I can't imagine it... But this is Manchester United..

Remember when we used to rage about the mistakes Evans made even though he put in 7/10 performances on average, just because he was never going to be as good as Rio and Vidic that we used as standards?
I miss those days. No we have a 5/10 performer talking about how irreplaceable he is.

He pretty much sums up the problems at the club.

Insistent that he's doing great despite all evidence to the contrary, and jumping to anything that supports his own hubris, like the clip of passes.

Mentally fragile, unable to accept criticism or accept responsibility for anything at all.

Unlike others, when he first came, and for England, I thought he was a decent player. There is still one in there somewhere, but if he can't even accept hes been below standard this season, never mind as woeful as he has been, then he will never improve or get back to his best.

This guy is full of his own self importance. I'm the leader of Manchester United, knee sliding/cupping ear goal celebrations against pub teams. He's an embarrassment.

He's playing under the worst manager in the league, having spent three years under a manager that plays a style designed to protect him. He will have to adjust. At least we won't have such a clueless manager soon
Oh wow, you can't be serious.
This is almost as delusional as his interview.

He reminds me of Lukaku with his over inflated ego and insecurity at the same time. He never was and never will be fit to be a United captain. He would never have any sort of reputation in an era around Rio, Terry, Campbell, Adams, King, Carragher, Woodgate, etc. I have always believed he is a Joleon Lescott level player - i.e. a good PL player but not the bedrock of a top Club's defence. Although this season, not even sure we can call him that.

Especially when he in the same match made a few that completely sailed over the head of his teammate out for a throw-in.

I think his ego and self-belief is probably what got him so far in his career, unfortunately his complete lack of self-awareness is probably what have stopped him from taking the extra step needed to reach the very top.

No sympathy for Maguire, his head is as thick as it is big. I don't normally like this, and will probably catch flack for it, but Old Trafford should erupt in boos next time he walks out. I'm all for supporting a player trying but struggling, but this attitude is absolutely unacceptable.

"I am the captain so when we are conceding too many goals I will get blamed"

That is what jumped out most to me. It isn't because you are the captain, it is because you are the worst performing defender in a bad bunch.

It's so depressing how we cut loose so many quality players but kept junk around for years on bloated contracts and recruited even worse players on higher wages.

Off the top of my head Evra, Rafael, Evans, Hernandez, RvP, Blind M.Keane. (Rio and Vidic both continued playing too)

I'm sure the above would all have offered more for a season or two more than the likes of Rojo, Jones, Mata, Martial, Lingard, Pogba, Maguire, Dalot etc.

There’s obviously a level of delusion in how he sees himself as a player. Explains why he never had the mindset and tenacity to learn and progress at the highest level.

I almost feel sorry for him.

Fair post although it’s now on the club to admit they made a mistake & marginalise his influence ala Kepa @ Chelsea.

We’re never recouping the fee or anything close.

This is the only thing I do not feel for any player.

He's had a shit season but thinks he is playing well.

I would only feel sorry for a player who is trying, accepts its not been his season and shows he wants to improve.

I dont see much of that from that Maguire interview.

If he's not one of the players sold this summer I think Ten Hag is going to have dressing room issues. You can't have a senior player, a captain no less , speak like that to the press- imagine what he says behind closed doors?

There's no delusion here. He knows he's shite. He's protecting his image and you'd do the same if you were a professional athlete in the modern era. He has 6-7 more years to his career and he needs to make money.

They don't have to sell him, just not play him. They've done it quite readily with the likes of Bailly and van de Beek. If he's still one of the first names on the team sheet next season, that's where the problems will start.

He's Ole's biggest mistake - 80M on dross and made captain as a newcomer to the club just beggars belief. As a player, he obviously isn't anywhere near good enough. As a captain, he's lacking even more so (and that's saying something). But as a man and a personality - you watch his interviews and his attitude on the pitch and think who in their right mind thought this guy could be a leader of this team and a spokesperson for the club in any capacity?!

Forget the fee - 80M thrown away, is sickening. But he will cost us more in the long run if we don't get him out of the team ASAP. We can't have a refresh and a new manager and be stuck with him in the squad - in the dressing room even (never mind the starting XI). He's just going to be a drain on the team.

The club need to show some Ruthlessness.

He should have been stripped of captaincy after yesterday's game.

A captain of Manutd is not a captain if he does not understand this game. He is leading the defence and we got breached in 4 mins. That is pathetic.

He just needed to hold his hands up and say he's not been good enough. Difficult season, yada yada.

Talking about being picked by managers gives off a 'well they know football and they rate me, so who cares what else is said, I've learned nothing' vibe.

What should he say?

"Yeah tbf I've had a rubbish season and should probably not be be in the team"

As bad as he has been, he's never going to say that.

This impotent anger over every soundbite is more embarassing.
