Not always a fan of Maguire, but his leadership quality is truly important to our team. Over the past few years, we have lacked a real captain who has the character to motivate and stand out for the team. It's also not the first time Shaw was caught off guard due to his lack of concentration. Mourinho had openly criticized him on a few occassions and despite it might affect dressing room atmosphere, I think he was right in some sense.

Not sure if you have ever played senior football but those conversations/moments happen in every team and every game. Its not really a sign of anything other than normal in game in team communication.

We can get away with Shaw whilst we have other transfer priorities but we do need to improve our left back. He's out of position a lot and if teams did target him they would find a lot more opportunities like Mourinho. Whilst the majority of teams are putting more emphasis to improve their right wings with Ziyech, Bernardo, Traore, Bergwijn, Pepe etc. he will get caught out by players who are simply smarter than him. Had he at least had some attacking capabilities to make up for it, that would at least pin the opposite flank but he doesn't really offer much on that front either. Unfortunately he's never looked like he wanted it enough.

Yeah this happens all the time, even at sunday league level. Only difference is now we can hear it.

Somewhere in your mind, touching a nerve
We need more strong characters like Maguire, especially in the spine of the team. We do seem to be heading in the right direction though in terms of getting some leaders in the team - Maguire, Matic, Bruno, Pogba, Rashford, McTominay.

I miss the days when we had VDS, Rio, Vidic, Evra, Gary Neville, Scholes, Giggsy, Rooney, Ronaldo etc in the team (leaders everywhere in their own ways)

You can't teach concentration. You are either able to or not. To go with his lack of brain power, Shaw is also a very average footballer. An absolute must to replace him in this transfer window.

Happens in every game, just there's no crowd noises now.

Is that Maguire's voice?

Shaw tend to have his lapses of poor concentration.
On a more positive note, Shaw is strong enough to receive that kind of normal "criticism".

There are players who couldn't receive that "treatment" well. Need nicer approaches else his performances will get worse.

Yes it happens in many games, but I seldom saw Valencia/Smalling/de Gea swear at someone when they were the captain.

I don't know why some people want to cover this kind of thing up with fake crowd noise, it's good to hear what players and coaches shout at each other (even if it is more less exactly what any bunch of five-asiders say  ).

It's good in as much as Maguire has come in relatively recently but is already able to shout the odds, a certain amount of which is necessary on a football pitch, but then I doubt he'd have been given the armband if he was still awkward and meek and being in a new environment.

Exactly

Wonder if he swore at himself for the Spurs goal?

I don’t mind Maguire, really, but I think stuff like this is nonsense. I’ve alluded to it before but this type of ‘captain stuff’ is like when Rooney was past it in his later years here yelling at everyone else. And at least he had the previous to back it up.

It isn't a must right at this minute, since we need to get our RW and the future of our defensive midfield sorted, but at some point within the next two seasons we would do well to look at finding an upgrade to Shaw.

Strange, I think concentration is one thing you can teach. You can't teach players to be like Messi - that requires pure talent, but mental attributes can be improved I think.

Agree. Not sure if it's a manager's instruction or not but Shaw often played a safe back pass conservatively when he was high up the pitch against Sheffield. Would like to see more adventurous moves even though we were in a comfortable lead.

Indeed. If this is called showing leadership quality then Jones was also a leader at some point

Leadership is upholding the highest standard on the pitch and leading by example. Personally I feel Maguire is to error prone to embody that.

Good stuff. I'd expect the players to demand more of each other.

I would have decked Maguire right there or told him to piss off if i was Luke. Did he switch on himself prior to the Spurs goal just the other day?

Bit random but I heard a LoI player said that when they played Chelsea in a friendly they couldn’t believe how quiet they were. None of the shouting at each other you usually get at lower league football. He assumed that this was because in a PL game you wouldn’t be heard so there’s no point (apart from in the Etihad, obviously!)

Re the OP, that sort of stuff may be “normal” but it’s still good to see a leader at the back. I’ve been moaning about how little talking you see from Jones/Smalling etc for years. Might be one of the reasons why our defensive record is so good this season despite all our defenders being quite flawed as individuals.

Although, to be fair to Shaw, it was a hospital pass from Pogba...

Yeah, he made mistake so he should never talk to his teammates, I don't think any football player should ever speak to any other football player on the pitch again.

It's quite funny that this kind of thing even gets any attention. Standard stuff on a football pitch.

Tbf to Shaw, I think the Sheffield United player came from outside the pitch and Shaw didn't know he came back on.

Exactly, even more funny is people saying Maguire shouldn't do that as he made a mistake against Spurs.

Why are the most mundane things overplayed when it's done by one of our players?

The least I'd expect from out captain is to bollock underperforming players.

A bit of a difference in reaction there don't you think?

Either way it's wrong. If you want to show him you switch on, make no more mistakes and help the team. If he makes one you can fecking well let him know about it too if you wish.

Not me mate. Shaw is the soft one here. I wish Luke had also told him to fecking switch on after the Spurs goal, captain or not. Roy Keane can tell it to anyone because he didn’t allow goals to happen like that

That's my point. There are plenty of "normal" stuffs which have been missing over the past few years, e.g. a captain who leads the team, off-the-ball movements, overlapping runs from the fullbacks, proper hold up plays up front etc. All these stuffs are pretty "normal" for any side including Sunday League Football but they have been rarely seen in United.

I'm sure this is normal. I reckon someone must tell Harry Maguire to stop fecking around with the ball at least 5 times a game.
