Maguire's Redemption | One-year option triggered

Harry Maguire has been on the end of unfair comments during his time at United. He should be given credit for not being one of the underminers we seem to have specialised in post Sir Alex and he was a good choice going by his England team experience and reputation as a team player.

It`s not about character in that way - it`s just that Harry`s flaws in a sub par United team are going to be highlighted by his defensive flubs. He`s never been quick and doesn`t have dimensions to his game to help him as he gets older. We need to move him on while he has some real value left.

Who would buy him in reality? He has a year left, is on decent wages (which we know he won't give up as refused to move to WHUM because of it) and is about to turn 32. Might get a few million but who would put him in their starting XI. Maybe he could have an emotional return to the Blades if they come up, but they won't be paying big money.

Whatever you want to say about Harry he's a top pro, he didn't give up after he was getting slammed every week from Fans and press and pundits..

It's games like today that suit him. He'll be back to his old shenanigans soon enough and that's why he really should be moved on. You can't have a player that blows hot and cold like him playing in defence.

Did well at both ends and got us the winner tonight when everyone thought we’d lose at HT.

They have triggered the plus one year so he is here for another season and that’s ok as he will gradually get worse and is fine for a back up.

Didn't say he stays he's Been great to not be brought into some of the nonsense that was said about him especially in press and ex pros .
He's been given his year extension and I realy don't think there will be another after that.
He's been a mile better this season , and I tell you what he does give you is that he's always Available very rare he's injured or suspended.

I wish we could sell him in the summer for 20m in the summer and recoup at least some of the money we spent on his transfer.

Going to be interesting to see if Tuchel has him in his first squad in a couple of weeks.

It was a simple shrewd decision by Maguire to stay, probably on the advice of his agent.

Think this is the better place to discuss this rather than the player performance thread or creating a transfer thread.

There’s no chance that we should be extending his contract.

He was better last season but still had so many poor moments. I do like him and his mentality is worth having around in the squad. Probably keeping him for his physicality in both boxes and of course the Hail Mary plays.

A contract on revised terms would be fine. Despite everything, he’s been our best defender.

Aside from De Ligt, Nono of our other defenders have any sort of presence in the air. We need 5/6 CBs in this system and Yoro/ Heaven are very young, and will go through periods of poor form.

His injury record is an issue. I'd hope we'd be future planning by signing Helland and giving him a season and understudy to De Ligt and Maguire.

If there is real interest and he wants a new challenge then I'd sell him in a heartbeat. He's managed to up his level a bit in the last year but it's time to move on and build a defense around Yoro, DeLigt and Heaven in my opinion.

If DeLigt misses a few games try Yoro or Heaven their and bring in Mazraoui for their spot.

I can’t see it. He’ll be 33 before the start of next season. Fine if he wants massively reduced wages but anything else would be a bit of a joke really.

So that’s at least another 3 years of Maguire at the club. Shows a lot of ambition and a break away from the past.

If there are decent fees, £15m + for him we should sell without a second thought given his age and contract situation.
If he stays, no issues, if on much reduced wages and he's happy being in the Lindelof like back up role where he'll see limited game time.

I guess we're not at a stage yet where there are enough leaders in the squad to let him leave. Says a lot really.

I'd be fine with him staying and finishing up with us. Obviously never hit the highs his fee would have suggested but if he stays for one more contract I think it's fair to say we got some value out of him and he's shown a lot of character to be at this point

Less wages, squad role and in the leadership group. Not an issue if the first 2 points are met.

If he is playing, it basically means that we can’t play a high line. We should let him leave next season and upgrade with a more suitable defender.

Squad role is what he was last season and will this season

Keep. With reduced wage. He is excellent if we need to defend deep. We also need cover as we have lots of injury prone CB and we are playing 3 CBs

He has 246 appearances for United in 6 years it averages out at 40 games a season what are you talking about ?

I do not support the idea of extending his contract. We need to sign an upgrade. Pacy, good in the air and strong on the ball. Someone who ticks those boxes.

One of those players who will always find himself back in the team somehow.

Can’t knock the guy if he is needed due to the others being made of biscuits.

I’ve gone through many stages with Slabhead, I’m now at the stage I don’t hate the idea of keeping him.

Shaw can go instead.

We also need culture setters and veterans. He’s also a part of that leadership group.

Maguire is the ultimate all weather professional. He may not play every game going forward, but he is a role model professional when the bad times come. He’s weathered the worst of it. Plus he’s been in huge Finals and competition’s and can be a good mentor to Heaven and Yoro.

We’re unlikely to recoup any fee from him that really changes any PSR values. His value is far more in the squad than outside it.

Seems like they want him to take up Evans' role in the squad and dressing room. I'm fine with that.

He’s clearly a really good pro, we would be idiots if we couldn’t fleece someone for 20m though.

When he plays we must sit deep. So, he is useful in only few games in a season. In all other games he is liability. If we really have offers we should sell him even before knowing for how much.
"Our offer is...."
"Sold"

He seems as a good guy and 100% professional but he just isn't nearly good enough.

He’s earns £200k+ a week which makes him one of the best paid defenders in the league. He is no where near that level. Unless he drops his salary considerably I don’t understand why we want to extend his contract.

He's been an okay to good centre-back for us for a couple seasons now, with some great moments. The price was dreadful business but that's not his fault, he shouldn't have got the captaincy either. But I'm happy enough for him to stay. He's a good professional and has something to offer the squad.

He is not smart, cunning nor even intimidating enough to be any sort of leader. I don't think anyone see hims in such light for real.
