I know we should not make threads whithout a link, but there has been a few. The below from Teamtalk is from december. While the sources for now is not great, it such an obvious target that I think he deserves a thread.

For those who haven’t followed Ligue 1 closely this season, Sangaré has been arguably the best all-action midfielder in France after Vitinha. He’s been the absolute engine for a Lens side that is currently sitting 2nd, the "best of the rest" behind PSG. If you look at the underlying numbers like ball recoveries, progressive carries, and successful tackles. He is performing at a truly elite level.

The Architect of the "Mali Pipeline"

What people need to understand is that the Red Bull-Mali connection wasn't just a stroke of luck; it was a highly sophisticated scouting infrastructure that Vivell was highly involved in creating between 2015 and 2020. While most European clubs were waiting for African talents to shine in U17 World Cups, RB shifted the focus to "Pre-Tournament Scouting."

Vivell spearheaded the formal partnership with Yeelen Olympique in Bamako. Vivell and his team implemented a process where players like Sangaré were monitored in their local environment for up to 24 months. They weren't just looking at technical ability; they used data-driven markers to identify how fast they look for a forward pass after winning the ball and the capacity to perform high-intensity bursts throughout 90 minutes.

Sangaré is almost like a poster child for this approach. By the time he arrived in Salzburg in September 2020, Res Bull and Vivell already had a complete profile of him. Even though Vivell moved to Leipzig just weeks before the official signing, the groundwork like the scouting trips, the data sets, and the relationship with the academy was made while he was at Salzburg.

Why Sangaré makes sense for us now:

- We know Vivell likes to return to players he has "grown" from a young age. He reportedly pushed hard for Benjamin Sesko last summer for the same reason and he might have years of internal data that other clubs simply don't have.

- In a PSR-regulated market, paying £35m for a player you've tracked for 6 years could turn out to be low risk, high reward

- We’ve lacked a high-volume #8 who can actually defend and transition vertically

I’d be surprised if he isn't a midfield target this summer. He’s the finished product of a process Vivell started back in 2019 and it could almost be a pride/ego-thing for Vivell. It just makes too much sense.

How come he didn't progress through the RB system and got sold to Rapid Wien in 2024?

I've become accustomed to reading long scouting reports in broken English on redcafe. The OP is far too polished for my liking.

Interesting to see this referenced, I posted about this re Kone and the academy link a while back.

For those interested, this is somewhat the origin story of what is now Red Bull's market. Wenger's old boss, the legendary JMG and why Mali has been on the up.

I’m sold after reading your post.

Firmly on this train!

They're paying me for having scouted him in "other than obvious" midfielders OP.

Him and Lamine Camara should be top targets in my opinion. Their maps on DataMB track Casemiro very closely. One of those two, Smit and Anderson would be an amazing CM overhaul, multiple balanced pairings and all (as well as Kobbie) are 20-23 y/o. Midfield sorted for a decade.

Yes we should sign both him and lamine as a gamble even makes sense.

And then go all in on anderson as well. Smit for his mooted price i am not sure yet.

Anderson plus 2 calculated gamble plus mainoo would be a great midfield overhaul. Sell ugarte also.

I'm very glad OP made this thread. I've been watching a bit more Ligue 1 this season, and both Camara and Sangare stand out as very promising midfielders.

Signing both would be tough come AFCON with Mbeumo, Amad and Maz already set to miss out.

The next AFCON is June 2027. After that it’ll be 2028 and from then one will be to every fourth year.

Knowing CAF, I don't have much faith in those being the times it'll hold. We've seen CAF make scheduling U-turns many times before. I'd be surprised if AFCON sticks to a quadrennial schedule like the Euros and WC.

The market is absolutely crazy right now. With Anderson reportedly moving for £115–130m and Mateus Fernandes for £85m, Premier League midfield prices are only going to skyrocket. Clubs will now be asking for fees similar to Fernandes' for players like Wharton, Scott, and even Baleba.

Because of that, I suspect we won't be buying from the Premier League this summer. The inflation caused by these deals has made almost every domestic target poor value. This just isn't the right window to shop within the EPL. We should be looking abroad instead.

Mamadou Sangare from Lens is definitely an interesting target. The fact there hasn't been much hype around him could help keep his price relatively reasonable. I'll admit I haven't watched much of him beyond highlight compilations, but he was one of the breakout players in Ligue 1 last season. From what I've seen, he looks excellent, he's only 24, and his statistical profile is remarkably similar to Mateus Fernandes'. Reports suggest he could be available for around £35m, which would represent outstanding value in today's market.

I can't say I watch him regularly, but he's the profile of player we should try getting. A Brighton player before he goes to Brighton and end up being sold for 90m.

All nice and good but big question mark whether he plays like that in the PL

24 is actually pretty old for a Ligue 1 "talent" - most the top players will have moved abroad or to PSG long before that.

His stats aren't even that great for Ligue 1 standards - Carlos Baleba's stats at Lille at just 18/19 were overall as good as 23/24 year-old Sangare. So I'm really not convinced he's in a comparable talent bracket to Fernandes, or even Baleba. You have to apply a hefty tax on a player's output for those moving from Ligue 1 to the PL.

He may be someone Brighton might sign, but he'd be more someone nearer to his peak already who just stays at Brighton's level and they won't end up selling later on for mega-bucks. Maybe more like a Mats Wieffer.

This isn't exactly cutting edge analysis, but when we were linked with him a month or so ago I watched YouTube highlights of him, and its definitely the most I've enjoyed looking at clips of any player we've been linked to this summer.

I've been quietly hoping the links will re-surface. I think there's a good chance they will.

If we can pick him up for say £30m then it's worth a punt but we need a nailed on starter. Bruno Guimarães would be a smart signing if we went for Sangare and Ederson. I feel like that's a nice blend for now and the future.

Im going to show my incredible laziness on this player - but is this the same Sangare of Nottingham Forrest

Guimaraes was 24 when he moved from Lyon to Newcastle. Kante was 24 when he moved from Caen to Leicester.

Both turned out to be outstanding Premier League signings.

It's ridiculous to dismiss a 24 year old playing in France simply because he isn't at PSG or hasn't already moved abroad. That's an incredibly reductionist way to evaluate a player.

Well that can be said about anyone really. Sure he did it at league one but can he translate it to the Premier League? Sure he did it at West Ham but can he perform at United?

Truth is no one knows for sure, League One is a strong league. Plenty of talents have come out of there and turned out pretty good in the PL.

100% correct. That's why there are the professionals at this; pundits then us fans.

With every level, the 20-20 hindsight gets more pronounced.

Just waiting for the reports to surface

‘Lens won’t coNader selling Sangare for anything less than 95m’

That said, like an earlier poster, watching his highlight reel has me the most excited I’ve been over other linked targets. He looks bloody brilliant. Can we get him? Can he transfer his form to EPL?…Let’s hope so

Would be very up for this but it has to be for a good price. I’d imagine if we sign two players around £35m in Ederson and Sangare it frees up a load of cash for a big fat singing like Tchouameni (who would be worth it)

That's why I find this 'EPL proven' thing pure nonsense. Yes there are more risks from buying from abroad. However some of the finest EPL midfielders came from outside the EPL as well.

I think it comes down to risk and convinction in your decisions. I still see no evidence our recruitment is data led, because if we were, this shouldn't really matter. I think the data is used to justify the targets, rather than draw up the list. That or we weight data from the PL far too high, so they always come out on top. Even if I look at Lammens, it was a scout reccomendation. Sesko didn't actually have the best stats last year, but Vivell knows him well to look past it.

Bruno Guimaraes had 10 Brazil caps already (and 4 CL appearances) when he moved from Lyon to Newcastle.

His stats at Lyon were also way ahead of Sangare's at Lille. Their defensive stats are pretty similar, but Bruno G's additional passing and creativity ability was night and day beyond what Sangare is doing.

What evidence do you have for the data team at Man Utd creating their models so that the data from the PL is weighted "far too high"? I would have thought they'd have access to tonnes of information regarding how players performance changes when transferring from different leagues to the PL, in order to formulate reasonable estimates.

I'd argue central midfield is the one position in Ligue Une that translates well to the Prem.

I mean Schneiderlin was "Prem Proven". How'd that work out? I don't put much stock in that label. It's about tactics and effective scouting.

I was hypothesising as to why the PL players seem to always come top of the pile. I would imagine it's my former point, rather than the latter.
