Which is just plain silly because racism is classed as hate speech, at least it is in the UK and most of Europe anyway.

There is a clear distinction between the two terms. I can't understand how people fail to recognize that.

It’s probably more likely that they don’t agree with how the distinction is defined. A line can be drawn between free speech and hate speech but in the end it’s always going to be arbitrary, therefore people aren’t all going to agree.
