Manchester United has today announced a new partnership with China’s Alibaba Group, that will bring exclusive club content to Alibaba’s ecosystem for the first time and extend the club’s engagement with its massive Chinese fanbase.
The partnership will see Manchester United content, including selected first-team matches, highlights and localised original productions, available to around 700 million consumers across Alibaba’s platforms.

There will also be a first-of-its-kind, dedicated Manchester United channel on Alibaba’s video-streaming platform, Youku.
The new Manchester United Youku channel will feature Academy, women’s and first-team tour games, plus first-team matches shown on-demand and global and China-specific content. Manchester United has already broadcast three games from our pre-season tour on the Youku homepage.

The partnership will also involve collaborating to create a future Manchester United flagship store, on Tmall, Alibaba’s B2C Marketplace, which will become the official online marketplace store selling Manchester United merchandise to Chinese fans.

Manchester United Group Managing Director, Richard Arnold, comments:
“We’re proud of our passionate and loyal following around the world and our Chinese fans are a huge part of that.

We are always looking for new ways to engage with fans there and this partnership with Alibaba enables them to connect with the club directly through one of China’s most popular video streaming platforms.

]“We’re looking forward to working with Alibaba to further grow our fan base in China and building on other areas of the partnership in the near future.”

Probably replace our far east training camps with concentration camps.

For real though, someone on Reddit said their CEO had involvement with the Chinese government, anyone know how true this is?

Every big business in China is involved with the government.

Oh no. Chinese agents inside Old Trafford. Keep away. China are upping their stakes in political pressure on other countries and should be held at an armlength.

On-demand is so huge news for all Chineses United fans who couldn't stay awake all night, just to watch a live game. The Chinese government have controlled much of its own internet in China.

China are clever bastards. They're getting their hands in as many pies around the world as possible. They will be king of the world in the next decade.

Human rights issues become a thing not worth mentioning when so much Chinese money is invested in your country.

That's the advantage of no elections, a government can think in terms of decades rather than months/years

There's more than meets the eye with such big deals. Some kind of ground work is being done at United, imo, of some type of take over or something. Guess time will tell.

Good news. Alibaba is a huge company, and Jack Ma is a very intelligent man. He won't be throwing money around for ego's sake. Hopefully this will generate a lot of revenue for the club.

As a British living in China, I can tell you all now... Unless you're clued up about world economy, this company is fecking huge. Massive amounts of money involved with this. Alibaba and their subsidiary organisations are not quite but almost comparable to something like amazon. Except they will be investing a lot more than someone like amazon would because they're keen to extend contacts in the west and are massively interested in growth outside anf within China.

Alibaba investing in United is nothing like being bought by the Saudis and the rights abuses there. Being bought by a governing family that inflicts abuses and invested in by a Chinese company that knows it goes on but doesn't play an active role isn't the same.

Nobody would be crying about drone strikes, extraordinary rendition or military camps if a US company were investing.

Perspective and nuance people...

YESHHHHH, We'll GOOO for it.
Jack ma is effectively retired now right?
Well that's just fine then, you being reassured that the man won't be egoboating around, but not knowing whether he's still at Alibaba :D

I think he stepped down in late 2018 and while he is still somewhat influential at Alibaba, he's not making the decisions anymore. I only know this because I recently traded 5 Alibaba stocks. But it's a great move, they are a big company and have millions of customers and it makes sense for us to reach new markets through Alibaba.

Jack Ma Car?
I'll get your coat and will tie it around your neck if you don't accept it. That's just terrible Pablo Montoya ffs

Is he 29? If yes then no, the best he can give us is 2 years after which his legs will be gone.
