It's time to be realistic. Even the way they hired Carrick was sus. Bought him in to steady the ship but the caveat was that we were only playing one game a week. Carrick simply put Bruno forward instead of playing deep. It's no stretch to say that even I could genuinely have got us Top 4 this season by playing players in their correct positions. Carrick gets us in CL, then suddenly he is the full time manager. Jokers
Still the same issues persist: we are too slow to react in defensive transitions. The space between midfield and our slow backline is too wide. ‘Arry and Zo ain’t catching anybody.
That's about it. One one those pre-season games where it all goes (very) wrong and afterwards you wonder why you bothered watching it at all.
Unsurprising given fitness but the midfield looked miles off it, so easy to play around. Mainoo in particular looked like a little lost sheep.
I maintain that the worst posters on here aren't the doom and gloom merchants but those that deny the evidence right in front of our eyes.
There will be posters that say Martinez lack of pace and height is no problem, or that we don't need athletic runners in midfield because PSG and Pep's Barca didn't. Or my recent favourite, that we only want new signings because we like shiny new toys.
Calling out the obvious flaws in the team get some in defence mode. People having a moan today are mainly doing so because it's validating issues that have been glaring well before today. Bruno has been crap this preseason and so has Dorgu, the difference is no one is saying Bruno shouldn't play but Dorgu at LW has been a contentious issue so if he's not performing then obviously it will be raised. It can't just be dismissed as "lolz judging off preseason games".
I unfortunately haven’t caught too much of preseason but I also know there’s very little relation between preseason results and how your actual season will go. I say this from an anecdotal POV anyway. If anything, the more we lose during preseason the better I feel our season will go 
How often do 100m signings work out?
I don't understand how we simultaneously have a bad squad as plenty here insist but that we could also get top 4 just by playing people in the right positions and doing nothing else.
I think the club did look for alternatives but there weren't very many good ones so they kept him on. That's fair.

It's laughable when you think about it. We have clowns in charge that can't make basic improvements to the midfield.The point is if you aren’t a possession orientated team, which we aren’t…you balance it with athleticism. I dunno which athletes we’ve had in the centre of the park recently, I must have missed them

Like one or two players that can run, pass and tackle well. We seem to only sign player that can do one or two well at most.
A couple of the 100m players we don't know yet as season not started, Caicedo, Rice and to an extent Enzo have been good. Wirtz will have to see if he has settled in this season. I don't really want us signing players for 100m, but clubs now know you can ask for stupid money for players. So it takes Bournemouth/Brighton level of scouting to find gems. Trouble is they are not us and are more in a position to get a reasonable asking price. Other clubs just think we are loaded and we likely aren't.

INEOS had one good summer of transfer signings out of 3. That's not good enough.
There's posters on here who have been denying any issues for the last ten years. You wonder how people haven't relented in their obsessive positivity given the reality that hits them in the face most seasons.

Absolutely. The lemmings will remain lemmings no matter how bad it is on the pitch. For them everything is always great. It has been great the last 12 years. All the managers have always been right and always been good. I often wonder how someone can live that way. Its hilarious.

they deserve everything they get to be honest.I just don't think Martinez is a defender, he's a DM. Obviously he can have great games in defence but the moment he's not absolutely on it he gets punished for being small and slow. Didn't watch the game mind, shite result but I suppose if we got people minutes and no injuries then it's a success of sorts.

Never worth worrying too much about preseason results. Not the worst thing to lose the last one so that we don't carry unwarranted overconfidence into the season. Every game will be a battle.
I do feel like people over played how much more we'd create and control the game with Santos and Tielemans. It was obvious there were still deficienes that need addressing, glad it was shown in a friendly, so at least we can't skimp.
The funny thing to me is partly because we’re writing players off in preseason but also because the majority of what is said is blatantly obvious, and someone sat on an internet forum has noticed something the coaching team haven’t.
Someone like Carrick has more knowledge than every single person on this forum, of that I have no doubt (unless Fergie is secretly a poster on here of course!).

It seems to me that even Dorgu is a better left back at the moment than Shaw. At least Dorgu is running and trying to win duels. But of course Dorgu has to play left/right winger, because he is better there.
It looks like City and Arsenal will easily finish first and second again with a bun fight for the rest of the top five that we look a bit lightweight for right now. But early days

Think the reactions are blinded by agendas. Musah and Jashiri were able to make 5 passes each into the final third. That should be incredibly difficult if the spacing and organisation between midfield and defence is correct. It wasnt and has nothing to do with athleticism and mobility. Its actually the opposite. Its preparation and organisation. I guess athleticism does come into it with the 2nd goal where Mazraoui hasnt tracked back the runner at the back post, but its still mostly mentality. He didnt try so he wasnt there. However before that we were slow to get our defence into positions while Chukweze was breaking down the right. Shaw was slow to get out to stop the ball coming in. Were Heaven and Lammens in the right places to defend the cross either? It missed Heaven by next to nothing, if he had been slightly more positioned the pass wasnt on. Lammens wasnt ready for a cross to come over and didnt even put pressure on the player in front of goal, while Chukweze had no other option as Shaw had all shooting angles covered. Its all positioning, organization, attitude and a bit of fitness where hopefully the players senses are a bit sharper to react to things once the season starts.

I know it's pre-season but it's not the first game of the pre-season. By this game, I'd expect the team to be largely fit and firing for the season ahead and what do we have?
I just hope this is the kick up the backside for all the powers that be at the club and the players themselves so that they can be better prepared for the long season ahead.

I think we sucked. They didn't do anything special, and their players aren't special too.
I felt we sucked a bit vs Leeds too.
He always knew our strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately he seemed to mix the two up regularly.

Look, I feel reasonably positive about this season. But once again I'll say that it shouldn't come as a surprise that many aren't
I really hope this is just a case of players not wanting to overextend themselves for a meaningless frendly game but we made a poor AC Milan side look like a prime Barca. Also there is one thing to reserve your effort and other to look clumsy, slow, sloppy passing, defenders swiching off etc. But we made them look like a prime Barca.
Just watched the highlights. Milan looked bang up for the game like it was their cup final. We looked like we were playing in a testimonial.
Defence is a serious concern. Shaw looked very slow and was caught out of position. Maguire looked ponderous. Martinez just back after injury and holidays, it showed.
No panic, its a pre season game and hopefully the management up will see whats needed, starting with a top quality left back.
