Man Utd vs AC Milan 15/8/26 15:45

I unfortunately haven’t caught too much of preseason but I also know there’s very little relation between preseason results and how your actual season will go. I say this from an anecdotal POV anyway. If anything, the more we lose during preseason the better I feel our season will go

Agreed.

It's pre season. From some of our supporters you'd think we'd be nailed on for relegation despite strengthening from a third place finish.
I'm just waiting for the "Amorim was let down by the board" posts after this result

Think there have been some good things in pre-season, I like what I have seen from our new signings. However today they targeted our weak spot, the left and it worked. Also pressed us and either we didn't want to risk injury or had no answer to it.
Its not even about preseason it's the bigger picture. We are lacking in too many positions.

It seems to me that even Dorgu is a better left back at the moment than Shaw. At least Dorgu is running and trying to win duels. But of course Dorgu has to play left/right winger, because he is better there.
I’d like us to at least try him there! We have enough cover up top.

It felt like in the Fergie years our league performance was always inversely proportional to the pre-season results prior. Don’t know if the stats bear that out though.

I feel like someone on the caf once did an analysis like this over several seasons. Comparing preseason results with the first few league match results. If I remember correctly, there was a correlation, but it wasn't particularly strong. Something like 60% chance to have a good season start if preseason was good

Something like 60% is quite close to 50/50?

Yeah that's what I mean. Slightly better chance at a good season opening with a good preseason, but only slightly. So statistically it helps to have a good preseason, but it's by no means decisive or significant.

Edit: first post meant to say no strong correlation

What is it with Bruno missing his penalties all of a sudden?
It’s quite difficult when you are flogging your arse off and the boss says he will definitely get you some help and he gets you a new pair of shinnies.

I do feel like people over played how much more we'd create and control the game with Santos and Tielemans. It was obvious there were still deficienes that need addressing, glad it was shown in a friendly, so at least we can't skimp.

That was literally their first ever time playing together in a game. Perhaps our knees could be jerking a little less.

He’s building fitness up to scoring them, it’s different to a real penalty. As long as he builds muscle during the kick we are sound.
You are already in midseason form.

No one's saying they're rubbish, there are just obvious issues playing against more physical or vertical playing teams a la Amorim. Brentford would be the same, so we need to find solutions for it. That doesn't mean throwing the baby out with the bathwater, it means adapting the squad to mitigate for it. Hall would be an obvious start or a LB of his ilk.

Couldn't work out how to play his system, couldn't work out how to play against it.

Plenty to work on! We played like RA or ETH were still in charge of the midfield and defence, large holes up the middle that a few decent but straightforward passes could bypass and cause trouble almost every time.

Our game management was straight out of one of their textbooks too.

I’m not saying anyone’s said that. You said other fans have overplayed how much more we’d create and control with them in the midfield, and I’m simply pointing out that we just don’t know yet. The sample size is far, far too small to say either way.

A week ago, Tielemans and Santos were great signings. Today, they are rubbish. Some people on here go overboard quicker than sailors on board an American aircraft carrier

Indeed. The truth is, they weren't great signings a week ago and they are not rubbish signings today. They are both "okay", but we need more if we want to finish in the top 4/5 in the league and go deep in any of the cup competitions.

I didnt see the game so I cannot comment, but consolidating the average views here, it is clear we need more players. What we have is not enough

Missed the game but saw the score - utterly disgusted.

I don't care if it's 'preseason' - it's one game out from the PL. It's against a manager who called you the worst United team in history, and made you play like one. He said he'd rather play his goalkeeping coach than some of our players out there.

You don't need tactics for this game as much as you need to go out there and show that you care. I don't care if we played like prime Barca, and created loads, this result is shameful on the players. They should be docked a month's pay for that.

Fuming. How can you not show up for this game of all games? Don't really care if Carrick benched all starters to prove a point even if it means throwing the Hull game. Losing to that coward must make you lose respect for yourself as a player.

Really hot conditions, and you could see some players conserving energy a bit. But the communication has been poor at times, too many simple mistakes. The midfield also looks vulnerable and lacks physicality. That’s an area that really needs to improve. Rashford, Mainoo and Dalot were also doing additional sprints after the match.

If we'd won 5-0 everyone would be saying it's only pre season. But we lost so it's the end of the world.

If we don't beat Hull, then I'll worry.

Calm down

I actually think that's what it is.

We couldn't figure out the system (amorim's). In addition, I think Tielmans, Cunha and Bruno were a bit undercooked.

The big thing we need to determine is who our CB's are. There are too many questions there for us to be comfortable.

We weren't able to build up at all today. Usually we use the 3-1 or 3-2 shape, but in this game, Mazraoui kept going up. Usually its either one midfielder dropping or the rb back staying deeper, this was also a problem with the rest defence.

The concern for me having watched most of our pre season games (missed Wrexham and Rosenberg) is that by and large we've been sloppy at the back and our form has progressively got worse not better.

Granted it's hard to judge games when so many changes are being made and essentially they are glorified training sessions. But, but... We should be seeing something. A spark of some kind, somewhere. Today it was a team with absolutely zero pride just strolling around accepting a tanking.

I feel like our fan base has written the first fixture as an easy win and we're due a crap, scrappy performance against Hull. We don't look remotely ready.

Sure it's a small sample size, but I don't think the last two games have done anything to convince me we've fixed the issues we had last season in that regard and we're asking our team to play higher - from what I've seen anyway. Add to the fact Chelsea fans said it was a concern with Santos and we know that's the main weakness of Tielemans game, I don't think it's as knee jerk as your portraying it either.

Well pre-season games shouldn't convince anyone of anything - that's my point! It was Tielemans and Santos first ever time playing together in a game so of course they aren't going to immediately fix issues from last season. It is knee jerk to jump on them for that after their first 60 mins playing together, or to extrapolate that they won't or can't help with some of those issues this season. Like any new signings, they need time to settle and learn to play together.

I reckon Carrick and Holland, plus the rest of the coaching team will have a good grasp on our preparations tbf.

Today was about giving game time to players who haven't had any or very little. It was therefore disjointed at times and defensively poor. We lost momentum after scoring handing the possession to them. That was disappointing but players aren't going to do anything too strenuous or risky one game out from the season start.

Why does anyone bother doing it then! No one's expecting the finished article, but you can see patterns or style and generally how people will play together. I think it's obvious how we will be attacked against with them in midfield and that's not necessarily their fault, it's the construction of the team/squad not being able to cover for what they bring in their positive aspects. I don't really think they can do much about their lack of athleticism, but as a team, you need to account for it. I don't think we're equipped for that currently - I think even Carrick will probably think that.

Preseason so doesnt mean much. A lot of post over exaggerating how good individually and as a team our previous performamces been...also over egging how bad this result was.
Its pre season. Loads of negative responses on shaws performance and need to sign a lb...he was terrible....for me though, we still havent signed what we REALLY need. This talk of new tactics and two ball playing cm....our biggest problem for years is being easily over ran on the breal in cm, happened again today...its just a friendly but tielmans, mainoo, mount, santos as our cm doesnt solve that i fear...baleba is a bigger prority tham hall...dorgu or mazaroui can play lb...nobody has the legs or strength to solve our cm defensive problems
