Man Utd vs Atletico Madrid 1/8/2026 14:00

Thought that was a great performance all things considered. Mount and Santos have been fantastic in every game. Intrigued to see if Tielemans comes in for PSG game or if we stick with that duo. I assume it'll be 2 of that trio starting our opening games. Yoro was great at rb again. He's looked strong there in all 3 games now and I'm fully expecting him to be our 1st choice rb at this point. Telling that he played the full 90 mins at rb instead of switching to cb this time imo. Tells me Carrick is happy with how he's adapted to the role. Amad was brilliant in 1st half. Lacey very exciting also. Mbeumo a bit hot and cold but ultimately 2 goals and that's what we need most from him. Heaven some good moments. Shaw also really good. Zirkzee continued to look good after coming on. Hoping to see Cunha come straight in on the left against PSG

Glad Thwaites finally got some minutes. Look forward to his passing in the midfield.

Half the fan base wrote him off before he even played a game

To be fair, we spent 50 mil on him, when he was in his last year of contract, and his best position happens to be where Bruno plays. Many fans were not actually doubting his ability but the logic behind his purchase.

Nevertheless, that's all water under the bridge. I just hope that he can stay injury free

And so he’s had a decent pre season game and half the fans are buzzing again… he’s still contributed nothing.
Judging a players worth is always done within the context of competitive football, not preseason friendlies

Really liking what I’ve seen from Santos so far. He’s the type that frees up the players around him. Does a lot of the dirty work, anticipates passes well, and most surprising to me was his forward passing. His ability to break the lines as been impressive so far.
And it's not like sliding, last ditch tackles, he just calmly dispossesses opposition players and mops up by reading the play very well.

An obvious statement, but despite having none of our starting three midfielders last season, our midfield play was outstanding today. Pre-season of course, but for what it was the quality of the play was incredible.

We’ll wait and see how he performs in competitive games, but I’d rather have his profile than a pure tackling DM.

Good performance, obviously only pre season though. What is good to see is how much young talent there is already in and around the squad. Santos only just turned 22, 21 or under is dorgu, heaven, yoro, mainoo already established, lacey knocking on the door. Then there is the fletchers, the young spurs signing plus very exciting thwaites and gabriel probably not that far off from possible oppprtunities over the season.
Too early to tell but for me there is 6 potential starters for the next decade plus, half of which come through our academy....thats very promising

Mainly brought in as a direct replacement for Ugarte and so far or be only challenge games looks a big upgrade.
That's what people who hadn't watched him said. Always thought he was being brought in to genuinely challenge for a starting spot. He already was a squad player at Chelsea and wanted to leave to get more gametime

Exactly, we have seen guys look quality in pre season before only to be crap in real games so I will never get carried away by any pre season performance.

We have also seen similar in end of season dead rubbers, players like Harrop star but then end up in League 2 not long after.

They are all good pro players so can look quality in the right circumstances, but actual competitive games are where you can really judge a player.

Always good to get a result against a team managed by Simeone bc you know it’ll be hard fought and a bit testy

Cause it's not a particularly bad injury so not a reason not to sign him.
May be. But I dont think you can do all of the test drills of a physical with a thigh injury? So we sognef an injury prone layer witjout a full and thorough test?

Lacey has a future here, I think you are covered in the left with Mbeumo, Amad and Lacey.

Mount earning a starting place Matchday 1

So happy for JJ Gabriel to get a few minutes at the end. We have to give him some to keep him interested and motivated during his rise. I'm sure he will end up a very good player for us within 3 years.

Very brave on the ball and will play with the risk we need from our wingers going forwards.

Who still thinks Dorgu should be our LW backup and we buy a LB instead?

Yeh it was only a pre-season game and not a full on competitive battle etc, etc, etc…..but Mount was outstanding from the first minute to the last.
Apart from a few games since arriving, where he showed glimpses what he’s really capable of, he’s only been average to good……when not semi-permanently injured and unavailable.
If only he can overcome his poor injury record of recent seasons, we have a really good player there.

Alongside him, Santos looks very composed and switched on. Thankfully he looks to have settled straight away, which isn’t always the case with younger players making the switch between clubs.
Early days but he already looks to be a top signing in the making.

What I like about the Mount and Santos pairing is the urgency they bring, while being able to keep the ball

I believe that’s what we’re looking to go with, judging by these Hall links and I agree with it. Dorgu looks better offensively than defensively in the 18 months he’s been here.

Surely Carrick would be trying him at LB in these games if he had any intention of using him there for material parts of the coming season, so I agree that we are probably exploring the Hall move seriously.

That's definitely the way it should be.

No idea why people think he's a LB when he's never played there for us. Not even experimenting in pre season with it.

Watch the game?

I missed it as traveling (holiday)… how’d we do? (what was good/bad/ok?)

We were the better team, made some good chances and came back from behind to win. We showed a lot of control with both Santos and Mount playing very well in the middle - Santos always looking composed with some snappy passing between the lines and Mount spreading the play and taking some really nice touches. Atletico found it hard to press them. Lacey was great - won a penalty and created one of our best chances with a lovely feinted touch and cross (narrow missed header from Mbeumo). Technically he looked like one of the better players on the pitch. Amad looked sharp but Mbeumo and Dorgu were both a bit rusty (although Mbeumo still got two goals). Heaven was great - solid at the back and played a couple of beautiful balls over the top to Dorgu - looks like something that had been planned and he was looking for. Yoro looked great at RB again. Overall it was an enjoyable watch.
