I'm Amorim-in, was starry eyed at the start, a bit smiling-mask-while-actually-crying meme now, but I back him.

I do wonder about contingency plans though, like I do about the "game model".

Who are the candidates if we will end up needing to make changes?

If it doesn't work we'll just bring in a manager who plays the same system maybe with slight variations.

But a heck of alot of coaches these days play with a similar back 3 and midfield set up. So I have no concerns there.

Iraola would be near the top of the list for me. He's done well with Bournemouth. Positive football, got them their highest ever Premier League finish after selling their biggest goal threat in Solanke the season before and done a good job working with and developing talented players like Huijsen and Kerkez. The cherry on top is that we could play a normal formation again.

Why on earth would we do that ?

You say that with such confidence, when all evidence would suggest we'll sign a fancy name and completely ignore any kind of tactical continuity and progression

I’m not sure this is actually the case though.

How many coaches are playing a 3-2-5 or 2-3-5 without wingers?

Have we ever appointed a manager that wasn't a complete 180 from the previous one  ?
Well, I like to think we have a plan now and we'll continue with a back 3 set up with or without Ruben.

Its actually a really good style but I think Ruben is doing a poor job putting his ideas across.

You'd certainly hope so yeah. And despite backing him now, you'd hope someone up the hierarchy is already having those very considerations and laying out a plan if it becomes necessary

Continuity doesn't necessarily need the same formation I guess, if the same principles of play are applied. We'd have to identify ours first, though
Right. The only clear pattern of play so far is passing it back to the keeper eleventy billion times per match. So I hope that isn’t foundational.

Football isn't rocket science, if we cant get the ball up the pitch ans into the box. Then what the hell are we doing? It only take 4 or 5 passes to do that and these players still seem like they can't do that.

This is exactly what we'll do.

Either that or we'll have no plan at all, appoint an interim manager who plays a different style and also fails, and then we'll be back to square one in the off season.

Then why aren’t the youth teams playing with a back 3 if this is the clubs plan?

When Amorim gets sacked we’ll revert to a back 4.

Whoever is available come October, maybe we're lucky and someone sacks before us then we can take a look at that manager.

Why would we expect that to happen when Amorim himself was completely different from the manager he replaced? That's without going into why would we lock ourselves into 3ATB formation even more if it doesn't work out with RA.

Exactly. And even the players they got him this summer can easily play other positions. Mbeumo could be the RW we've been waiting for since Valencia. I can't see us getting a manager with a similar vision to Ruben if he shits the bed.

The fact that the club keep putting across that they are purposefully buying flexible players why can play in more than one formation (never thought I’d ever say that), would suggest they are fully keeping their options open

Yeah a couple of the press briefings earlier this week almost read like warning shots to Amorim.

There's no way we don't already have a shortlist ready to go - even if Amorim had smashed it, I think they'd be stupid not to always know the availability/interest of a few coaches because you just don't know what will happen in football. Same for all clubs really, just be in touch with guys you rate highly.

Whoever it is, the club needs to treat the next manager as an equally disposable asset as (they should be doing) with the players. Give the manager an adequate amount of time - if they fail to deliver, strike quickly to replace.

I think Amorim will unfortunately be gone by Christmas (I want him to do well but I don’t think he is tactically cut out for this league) and we’ll appoint Southgate as his replacement.

Not even Ineos would be that stupid. They know that 99% of the fan base do not want Southgate.
They even leaked that Ashworth wanted Southgate to get the fans on side when they sacked him.

The bookies favourites for next United manager are:

Glasner - 4/1
Southgate - 9/2
Pochettino - 8/1
Carrick - 8/1
McKenna - 10/1

Glasner favours a back 3, but everyone else would probably opt for a back 4 at United. I reckon it's 50-50 whether Amorim lasts the season. If he does go mid-season, I expect United would look to limp through to the summer with an interim and then go for Glasner.

The good news is if Amorim can't make this 3421 work, someone could step in an play 4231 immediately with this squad:

-------------Onana-------------
Maz-DeLigt-Yoro-Shaw
----------Cas-Ugarte---------
---Amad-Bruno-Cunha--
-----------Mbuemo-----------

TBF... I think that team spanks anything Amorim puts out in his preferred shape.

Always passing sideways or back, allows the other side to setup their defense. A lot of it is because our players are afraid of running and some hard graft.

Unfortunately this is the most realistic outcome. Every time we tell ourselves "I'm sure there's a master plan in place this time", it ultimately turns out the club is still just making things up as they go.

Yep, too many of our players are scared. Dalot is the worse of it.

I think we would need to be in the relegation zone after Christmas for there to be serious consideration on pulling the plug. RA will get at least one full year with his new signings and an acceptance that more is still needed and provided he is showing progress we will likely stay the course for another year or two beyond that.

I know Iraola will be the popular choice based on his work at Bournemouth but I wouldn’t be against De Zerbi who’s done a great job at Marseille and did a brilliant job at Brighton, I’m sure he’d love the chance at a big club in the PL.

I wanted Big Ange here before we appointed Amorim.

That said, I still have some hope that Amorim will turn it around this season.

Either of these would be great, but I think we’ll end up with RvN as a stop gap

Utd have made it clear this summer that they are buying players who can play in multiple roles and not wedded to a back 3.

If Amorim was sacked I'd expect whoever came into go to a flat back four.

We have two centre backs who suits the Amorim 3 CB system at present: Yoro and Heaven.
