It's so utterly bizarre. Will go on a month long research so that we could reference something...that is already known? Spoiler alert, Rooney has 216 goals and 129 assists.

This season's end saw us in third place. Arsenal went on an unbeated run for the whole season, but even with that we could've been in it to win it. It was the absymal form in the second half of the season that stopped us, and ban of Rio Ferdinand for missing drug test didn't help at all. 8-5-6 in 2004, after 15-1-3 in 2003 part of the season.

We won the record 11th FA Cup though, and had a CS win (Community Shield from now on I think) over Arsenal. West Bromwich Albion stopped us in League Cup, while Porto in first knockout round of Champions League (which ditched the two group stages finally).

Lots of new faces in United. David Bellion, Eric Djemba-Djemba, Tim Howard, Kléberson and certain Cristiano Ronaldo joined us in summer before the start of season. Louis Saha and Dong Fangzhuo joined in January.

We said goodbye to David Beckham, who left for Real Madrid, and soon after to Juan Sebastián Verón, who had a disappointing stay at United, especially for that transfer fee.

Van Nistelrooy continued his immense goalscoring form, while Giggs had a record breaking assist-wise season. Guess Beckham's leaving helped a bit there.

Notable departures

Player focus

Cristiano Ronaldo

While not yet a world superstar, Ronaldo played and shown a lot in his first year with us. Had an outstanding season in 2007-08 when he become the first winger to score 30+ goals since George Best. Not to mention a great double then - League and Champions League.

At this exact moment could very well be the best player in the world, it's just a shame he's that in Real Madrid's jersey.

Brilliant this.

Just goes to show how awesome we were back then. Giggs and Beckham providing goals on a plate season after season. My god.

Now compare that to having Valencia, Nani and Young on the wings for the past 2 seasons. Torture.

People talk of the CM issue being one of the big reasons we are in this state. But our wings(attacking side) are just as much to blame for. Thankfully we got Di Maria now.

Cantona, Cole, Solskjaer, Sheringham, Yorke, Ruud, Rooney, Saha, RvP, Falcao. Lota of goals in them.

Thank you for this Mrs Smoker. Looking forward for the rest.

Our fourth trophyless season in 17 seasons. Finished third in league with 18 points behind Chelsea, who had a record breaking season tally of 95 points. At least we beat the Invincibles to stop their run. Small victories.

Arsenal was our bane in Community Shield and FA Cup though, but at least it was in the final in latter. And Chelsea stopped us after two legs in semi-final of the League Cup. Same as last year, we again failed to progress past the first knockout round in the Champions League, this time Milan was better.

Five new signings, and among them 18-year old Wayne Rooney from Everton. Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinze joined as well, as well as younglings Gerard Piqué and Giuseppe Rossi.

After a long and successful United career, Nicky Butt will depart to Newcastle. Near the end of last season, Fabien Barthez left, so Tim Howard and Roy Carroll were our goalkeepers in the season.

Notable departures

Player focus

Wayne Rooney

Had no idea he actually had 7 hattricks. On route to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton's record tally of 249 goals. That's it, if we don't sell him in Winter.

No title again? Third season in a row, oh boy. We were also sold to Glazer family, so a double blow for some. Add to that embarrassement in that season's Champions League where we finished last in group stage, misery is complete.

Domestic cup runs weren't bad though. Liverpool did beat us in 5th round of FA Cup, but we did win the League Cup with a strong performance against Wigan, in a match that ended 4-0.

More bad news to come though. Phil Neville left the club after more than 10 years, but bigger news was departure of captain Roy Keane after series of disagreements with Sir Alex and management and some MUTV appearances.

But not everything was bad, the future looked bright. Just check the names bellow, players we signed in two transfer windows of that season. Even the Caftards at the time were positive.

Edwin van der Sar
Park Ji-Sung
Nemanja Vidić
Patrice Evra

Bang for buck, best ever?

Also Ben Foster joined, but his United career wasn't as spectacular.

Notable departures

Players focus

Darren Fletcher
John O'Shea

Two great servants of the club. John is in a defensive partership with Wesley Brown in Sunderland these days, while Darren is vice captain of United today. Nothing spectacular stat wise from both, but nothing expected either. Though, interesting to see Fletcher's 2009-10 season, was quite productive.

Now that's more like it. Dominant performance in the league, in the first season of another 'treble' of consecutive titles. This actually could've been our first title in a series of seven of them if only we had managed to gain two points more at some particular moments in a couple of future seasons. Ah, could've, should've.

Ronaldo, winner of eight individual awards of the season, was clearly the best player in the league, and has formed a formidable partnership with Wayne Rooney, scoring 46 goals combined and providing 37 more.

Chelsea stopped us in the FA Cup final, with Didier Drogba's goal in 116th minute, while we have won just one game in the League Cup, against Crewe, before losing to Southend.

Europe campaign wasn't bad, and was just a glimpse of things to come. We were stopped in the semi-final by Milan, but there were moments to remember in each of the previous two knockout rounds. First happened against Lille, when Giggs scored a cheeky and quick free kick while Lille was still trying to put up the wall. After that, they even left the pitch for a while. Oh, those silly gooses. Second highlight happened against Roma in QF. After the loss in Rome 1-2, United obliterated Roma in the return leg. 7-1 was the final score on that glorious night.

Michael Carrick was the only notable signing, but we did have an interesting loan in the Winter, Henrik Larsson joined us for three months. Also, have to mention return of Ole Gunnar Solskjær who didn't have a serious game time in a long time, nor scored a goal since 2003. Though, this was his last season, as he retired on August 27th 2007 following failure to fully recover from an operation.

As mentioned before, Keane left previous season, and before the start of this one, Ruud van Nistelrooy left for Real Madrid, not the first one, not the last one.

Head on here, for some more thoughts from Caftards about this (and following ones) season.

Another very successful season. After nine years, we finally won the Champions League again, not to mention second league title in a row. Didn't start as great though, as after three rounds in Premier League, we found ourselves in 17th place, with only two points. But just a few rounds later, we were already at the top. Gives me hope for this current season of ours.

Swiftly went through the group stage of Champions League with five wins in a row, before drawing with Roma in sixth, completely unimportant for us, game. Lyon followed in first knockout phase, and in QFs yet again we met with Roma. Two wins set us up with a semi-final versus Barcelona. After 0-0 away, Scholes' brilliant kick at Old Trafford was enough to push us to Moscow. Won on penalties of course.

Portsmouth ruined possible treble for us, as they beat us in 6th round of FA Cup at Old Trafford (0-1). League Cup was a quickie, 0-2 loss vs Coventry in first match.

Ronaldo was outstanding with 42 goals in all competitions, and new signing Tévez and Rooney chipped in 19 and 18.

Lots of new names in United that season. Owen Hargreaves joined from Bayern, his United career was ravaged by injuries, in four seasons accumulated only 39 appearances. Nani and Anderson came from Portugal, Sporting and Porto, for combined sum of 30m pounds, and goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak came from WBA. Argentine Carlos Tévez has joined the club on two-year loan on August 10th.

Manucho and Rodrigo Possebon came in Winter.

Lots of departures as well, as we'll see in table bellow.

Notable departures

Players focus

Louis Saha
Carlos Tévez

Two excellent strikers with "short" United careers. Tévez was with us for just two seasons, rejected the contract offer only to join Manchester City. Saha's career was not short time wise, but appearance wise. Another forward plagued by injuries, in five years with us gathered only 124 appearances. Was a fine fine player.

Rooney's stats are impressive you have to say. 10 seasons with a minimum tally of 16 goals - I doubt there are many players around Europe who can claim that over the same period.

Interesting that 2011/12 was his most productive (1 goal or assist per game) despite perceptions that he has not been at the peak of his powers since 09/10. He matched this last season also with a higher weighting of assists.

I think Rooney would be viewed differently if his highest goal tallies had come in title-winning seasons. In reality his best seasons have ended in disappointment for the club.

What a brilliant thread. Fair play Mrs Smoker.
I can't believe you did it all just to prove some point about Rooney though.

Seriously though this will be a thread I will be revisiting many times in the future I reckon. Great stuff. 95/96 I think is still my favourite season

Brilliant thread, very enjoyable. Forgot that we started so poorly in the league 2007/08. Hopefully we can turn it around this season in a similar way.

And another "triad" of Premier League titles. Third consecutive title for the second time in Premier League, plus with it, we also tied the Liverpool's record of 18 league titles.

Also featuring...

In other competitions we weren't disappointing either. We won three more trophies, Community Shield over Portsmouth, League Cup with a win in final over Tottenham, and another edition of Club World Cup -- and this time we didn't forgot FA Cup. Where we lost in semi-finals, so, not that bad.

We had another great Champions League campaign, passing group unbeaten and taking down Inter, Porto and Arsenal in the knockout stages. Though, in final there was a great Barcelona team, and we were beaten 0-2. Oh yeah, Super Cup was lost against Zenit, though I never was too upset about that. Nice Scholesy handball there.

All in all, I think it was a fine fine season.

Dimitar Berbatov was the biggest name in the summer transfer window, and on the last day we got him from Tottenham Hotspurs.

Brothers da Silva, Fábio and Rafael also joined. Fábio isn't at United anymore, he's playing for Cardiff now under Ole Gunnar Solskjær and in company of some other former United player such as Federico Macheda, Magnus Eikrem or Mats Dæhli. Hope they come back to Premier League as soon as possible.

Rafa is currently recuperating from an injury, but we should see him soon on the field. Zoran Tošić and Ritchie De Laet joined in Winter window.

Notable departures

Rio Ferdinand
Nemanja Vidić

A bit of focus on a tremendous defensive pair of United. Both said goodbye to United after the end of disaster of last season, with Rio playing for QPR, and Nemanja heading to Italy, Inter Milan.

God Liverpool fans were insufferable that season. Thought they were starting a revolution that would end competition in England for years under Rafa.

Just because they actually managed a title challenge. Ended up 2nd and 7th the year after!

We only scored 68 goals that year which is strange. Vidic and Edwin were unreal that year, so was Jonny Evans whether you like him now or not.

Once you get the taste for it...

Massive domestic success followed title winning 92-93 season. League, FA Cup and Charity Shield were won, and we've reached the final of the League Cup, only to be stopped by Aston Villa. Reached only the second round of European Cup though, where Galatasaray went through on away goals.

Only signing of the season (but what a signing!) was future captain, Roy Keane. Joined us for a record fee od 3.75 million pounds from Nottingham Forest.

Notable departures

Player focus

Roy Keane

Dominating midfielder immidiately had an impact upon his arrival by scoring or providing 22 goals in his first season. But you don't think about stats when you think about Roy Keane. You think about his aggressiveness and leadership which helped him excel as a team captain from 1997 (Eric Cantona's retirement) all the way to 2005 when he left the club. Spent some time at Celtic before his own retirement. After playing career he went into managerial waters, and is currently an assistant coach to Paul Lambert in Aston Villa. Also, can be seen as a pundit on ITV occasionally.

Goosebumps watching that Keane video. If I had to pick one player to have eternal Manchester United life it would probably be him.

Lets try to finish this today. Took me a bit longer than I thought it will.

==============2009-10==============

We still feel a bit cheated in this season. Drogba's offside goal in, ultimately, title decider will never be forgotten. Well, of course, without that happening, we still might've lost, but we'll never know...

Come on!

That loss followed another one in the Champions League against Bayern couple of days before. Wayne Rooney got injured there, and therefore couldn't play against Chelsea. Again, who knows what might've been if he was fit. That was the first leg of QF of CL. Second leg started brilliantly, after 7 minutes we already had 2-0 lead, near the end of first half we brought that to 3-0, but Olić's goal just before half time gave them much needed hope. Second half brought an early sending off of Rafael for weak foul on Ribery, and Robben scored their second goal some 15 minutes before the end. We couldn't score again, and they went through on away goals.

FA Cup brought a shock loss against Leeds at Old Trafford in our first game, but not everything was sour in that season, as we won the League Cup for the second season in a row. Aston Villa was the opponent in Wembley's final.

Before the season we also sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a world record fee at the time. It might still be a record, not quite sure. Tévez rejected a contract offer, and went on to join town rivals, Manchester City. Those were incredibly huge losses, how can we bounce back after that?

No worries, we signed some great stars. Antonio Valencia from Wigan, fast Ecuadorian operating on right wing. Michael OWen for free after his contract with Newcastle expired. He did score a last gasp winner against City, for that, he was worth it.

Gabriel Obertan and Mame Biram Diouf also joined. Gabby is with Newcastle these days, and Diouf shows his skills at Stoke. Just recently buried Manchester City with a brilliant goal.

Also, Own Goal rocked that season. But not enough for a permanent contract.

Notable departures

Players focus

Patrice Evra
Park Ji-Sung

Best friends in United, neither with United anymore. Park retired, while Evra continued his career in Juventus.

Also, some sites have Park with 2 goals in his debut season. On February 4th 2006 against Fulham, he scored a goal that was slightly deflected and therefore some sites have it as own goal. Transfermarkt, Wiki and me have it as Park's goal. I believe it would still go within goalposts without deflection. Not really that important, 27 or 28 at the end, but doesn't hurt to mention it.

The number of games played by Paddy never fails to amaze me. Feckin' warrior that man is.

Also, from this thread - I never realised that Ole scored more goals for us than Andy Cole... so that's something. Also, the number of assists that Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Ole all notched is quite something... goes to show you how good a footballers they were as strikers.

Oh, and excellent thread by the way.

A nice season. Opened it up with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in Charity Shield but finished it up with a 1-3 loss to Barcelona in yet another Champions League final. Still, a record 19th league title, and CL final, that's a success everywhere...well, maybe not in Real.

What's particular for this season was also our magnificent home form in the Premier League. 18 wins and just one draw against West Bromwich Albion in 19 games. Not too shabby, eh? And we needed those wins, as our away form was really not that great. Counting cups and CL, we had 26-3-0 home record.

Javier Hernández was our top signing of the season, he came from Guadalajara and had an immidiate impact with first of his 20 goals came in Charity Shield. Chris Smalling from Fulham and Marnick Vermijl from Belgium's Standard also joined as well as certain Bébé. Some of us might still be puzzled about that transfer. ;)

In January, Anders Lindegaard, Danish goalkeeper joined from Norwegian club Aalesund. No notable departures.

This season started quite brightly, with seven wins in a row in pre-season friendlies, along with excellent 3-2 over Manchester City in the Community Shield. A brilliant team goal there.

We continued in that form for some time, bringing five more league wins in a row. It's a shame that City started pretty well as well so, there hasn't been much of a distance between us in those five games. They actually soon overtook us is standings, plus quite embarrassed us at Old Trafford with an emphatic 6-1 win. That was bad, but didn't really fazed us *that* much, as, save for a 5-day period at the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011 (and two losses), we took 59 points out of possible 69 and climbed back to top. Had 8 points advantage to boot!

But then we went to Wigan, team we beat in each and every game we played with them since their promotion -- 13 wins in a row. And this time we lost, 5 points advantage. Villa came next and we maintained that advantage, but then again came the "sure win" game vs Everton at home. 4-4 was this time, advantage now at only 3 points, and next game is against City themselves. Lost as well, and there goes the eight points advantage, in the space of four games.

But the worst came on the final day, in the final minutes of 2011-12 Premier League. We won at Sunderland, while at that moment City has been losing at home to QPR 1-2. Just as we finished, 2-2...and moments later, there comes Aguero and scores for 3-2.

God damn QPR. That tool Barton also got sent off.

Quite an ending...for a neutral or City fan.

Better to not mention out European adventures at all. In a long time we failed to progress past the group stage. Managed to beat Ajax in Europa League, but in next round Athletic Bilbao gave us a lesson. Plus a spanking.

Domestic cups, meh. 5th round in League Cup, with a loss against Crystal Palace (at home), and 4th round in the FA Cup, with a loss against Liverpool. If anything, at least beat City in 3rd round.

Lots of new faces, lots of departures.

Biggest signing was David de Gea, goalkeeper from Atlético Madrid. We didn't make a same mistake as after Peter Schmeichel's departure, this time we got a fantastic goalkeeper to replace departing Edwin van der Sar immidiately.

Phil Jones from Blackburn and Ashley Young from Villa also joined.

We said goodbye to three guys that spent 10+ each with United. Gary retired, while Wes and John headed to Sunderland. Edwin called it as well.

Brilliant thread!

Seeing as you're doing this in your spare time with nothing to gain I feel obliged to make demands of you. Will you make a list with all the players that are featured and their total? This will probably be the only place on the net that will have all these statistics side by side (especially assists). Would be nice to see that comparison.

You say it like Nani doesn't provide assists. Has the same assist per game ratio as Beckham (0,32 vs 0,33)

A glorious season. And a sad season. End of an era.

In a dominate display we took back what was ours and won the league with almost a month to spare. 20th league title for United, and 13th for Sir Alex Ferguson, our greatest departure. Fergie decided that finally he's ready for retirement, and he went on a high, with yet another title.

Ref spoiled his final European campaign, with sending off of Nani against Real Madrid. We were better until then. And Chelsea spoiled domestic cup runs. Ah, not such a big deal.

We got Robin van Persie that season, and he continued doing what he was doing last couple of years in Arsenal, grabbing 30 goals in season. Kagawa joined as well, from Borussia Dortmund, but we'll not enjoy his company for too long, as just a few weeks ago, he rejoined the German outfit. Ángelo Henríquez, Nick Powell and Alexander Büttner were other signings in the summer. (we bough Wilfried Zaha in Winter from Palace, but left him there on loan until the end of season)

Paul Scholes decided after the season it's time for him as well to retire...this time for real.

And now, we're focusing on the greatest one. Sir Alex Ferguson's reign in numbers.

Just astonishing.

Great thread this. I think it's impressive how Giggs' assist record stays pretty respectable from 2008 onwards, after he started playing more centrally. Corners and free-kicks obviously inflate the number a bit, but he still contributed more than anyone else we've had in there for ages. Pretty sure that, with the exception of the game where we played the reserves in the second leg against Schalke, he assisted (or scored) every one of our goals in the knock-out stages of the CL in 2011.

Jaysus, Nani's form really did fall off a cliff at some point in 2012. Was that when carragher assaulted him?
That came in March 2011. He got injured at the Emirates in January 2012 (I think) which put him out until the last few games, but his first half of the 2011/12 season was up there with his 2010/11 form. Even when he came back towards the end of the season he was great in the 4-4 against Everton, then just faded away from there on in with all those niggling injuries. Although 10 goals and assists in 21 starts in 2012/13 is more than I thought he'd got, not a bad return that.

Guess I can stop, but no, wasn't intended as SAF years only. Started with SAF because there was video footage of all the United goals since he became a manager so it was possible to get the assists as well.

Completist in me wants to do 2013-14, sorry. ;)

That's it. Hope you found some of it interesting, though, I did enjoy doing it nevertheless.

Have some misc tables to post yet, will do that during the evening-late afternoon.
