Astana Football Club (Kazakh: Astana Fýtbol Klýby) is a professional football club based in Nur-Sultan. They play in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest level of Kazakh football, and are members of the Astana Presidential Club, an association of the main sports teams in Astana supported by the Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna.

The club was founded on 27 December 2008, as football clubs from Almaty Megasport and Alma-Ata announced they would merge to found a new organisation. The club was named "FC Lokomotiv Astana" as the National Railway Company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy became a general sponsor, and Vakhid Masudov became the first head coach in the club's history.

The short history of the club already boasts five league titles, three Kazakhstan Cups and three Kazakhstan Super Cups. The club's strongest rivalry is with Kairat, among fans their matches are known as the Two Capitals Derby. The club's home ground is the Astana Arena (Kazakh: Астана Арена).

    Team should be...

    ---------------Romero---------------
    Young--Tuanzebe--Maguire--Rojo
    -----------Fred-------Matic-----------
    Greenwood---Gomes---James
    --------------Rashford--------------

Subs: Grant, Jones, Garner, McTominay, Andreas, Mata, Chong

I would have played AWB but seems we need to manage his back injury so that's why I have Young at RB and am forced to go with Rojo at LB. I'd play Maguire to give him European experience. It'll be a damn shame if neither Greenwood or Gomes are in from the start

Play Gomes. and other kids. Keep Maguire and AWB out of this.

Never heard of Astana. Maybe we should play our women team against these lots. Would be more competitive and interesting to watch.

    Ole level : )

Hoping for something like this. Will never be full backup side, though if Lingard isnt fit then I'd say Mata will start. Maybe Rashford will start for one of Chong or Gomes, very rare that they'll all start together. Hopefully Garner also gets subbed on. Glad this is at Old Trafford, more relaxed time to start the youth.

Silver lining, these games could be useful for building confidence and playing youth.
Europa league can be a lot of fun for travelling fans. Get to some new places. Sadly I live in the US now so not an option.

Obviously want to be in the CL but this is clearly about our level now. Might as well enjoy watching the team, hopefully we can go deep into the competition, see some young lads play. I’m sure Chelsea and to a lesser extent Arsenal enjoyed their runs last year, I enjoyed the 2017 win greatly. It’s more fun than finishing 4th honestly (if that’s what else we’re aiming for).

Astana is number 4 in Kazakhstan :

They are basically an extremely experienced side with quite a few players born in the 80s or in 1990. They have some internationals from Moldova, Bosnia, Belarus, Rumania and Kazakhstan, but no big stars. The closest they have to an established star is probably right-back Antonio Rukavina. He is 35 now but has played close to 60 matches for Serbia and has played for clubs like Dortmund, 1860, Villareal and Valladolid.

Their main goalscorer is (surprise, surprise) another 30+ player: Marin Tomasov. 32 year old Croatian with 18 goals in 34 matches for Astana.

Kazakhstan is ranked 112 on the FIFA-ranking and they are not the best club in the League.

I would say they are a medium Championship-side at best...which means we SHOULD beat them quite easily...unfortunately it isnt Always as easy as that :)

I don’t want to put a downer on this game but if any team can make another team look 5 levels above what they are, it is us.

Romero, Young, Tuanzebe, Jones, Rojo, Matic, Fred, Gomes, Lingard, Chong, Greenwood.

Agree, plus if we lose a weekend game it's a chance to respond without waiting a whole week.

I would let Romero, Jones, Tuanzebe, Gomes, Greenwood, Fred and Chong start so how about something like this:

Romero - Young, Maguire, Jones, Tuanzebe - Fred, McTominay - Chong, Gomes, Mata - Greenwood

That way we can rest the majority of the team for West Ham

Would rather no Mata but in general agree.

Please play Greenwood, Gomes and Chong. Give us something to be excited about.

More likely is Mata and Lingard play, are both awful and we sneak a boring 1-0 win
