West Ham United Football Club (nicknamed The Irons, The Hammers, and The Academy of Football) are a professional football club based in Upton Park, East London; and were founded in 1895 by foreman and local league referee Dave Taylor and owner Arnold Hills as Thames Ironworks - a strictly amateur football club. They turned professional in 1898 upon entering the Southern League Second Division, and were promoted to the First Division at the first attempt. Following growing disputes over the running and financing of the club in June 1900 Thames Ironworks F.C. was disbanded, then almost immediately relaunched on 5 July 1900 as West Ham United F.C.

West Ham's most successful period started with the appointment of Ron Greenwood in 1961, leading to FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners' Cup titles - with youth team graduates Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters at the forefront. Their nickname 'The Academy of Football' pays homage to the success of the club in coaching future greats - which includes that trio of World Cup winners, Trevor Brooking, Paul Ince, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. West Ham's most prominent rivalries involve local clubs Millwall, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur; and they have been playing their home games at The Boleyn Ground (often referred to as Upton Park) since 1904, with a plan to move into the Olympic Stadium by the start of the 2016/ 2017 League season.

Couldn't care less about this fixture, I expect us to win this quite comfortably if Rudolph doesn't put on another goalkeeping masterclass. Not bothered if we lose, either.

It's a good game for Pogba to sit out his one game ban. The Everton game is far more important.

In terms of line-up, I'd go something along the lines of:

    Romero

    Valencia, Jones, Blind, Shaw

    Fellaini, Herrera, BFS

    Mickey, Martial, Memphis

Obviously Mourinho isn't going to play BFS, so probably Mata for BFS.

One of the most important games of the season considering our league position and the fact that our chances of winning the title are slim-to-none and Champions League qualification is not particularly noteworthy. Win multiple cups and this can still be a great year in our history though. Go out here and we're down to the FA Cup and Europa League for genuine purpose and those matches are infrequent for the next couple of months.

I'd like the following, but no idea what we will see. It'll likely be some variation of the first team and so it should be.

    DDG
    Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Blind
    Carrick Herrera
    Rooney Mata Mkhitaryan
    Zlatan

    Fellaini and Pogba are suspended.

Hope that he'll bring in 4/5 fresh players

I think that we'll be off. Team is tiring a bit and won't be able to play a second game like this in 3 days.

4-0 probably. Expecting a similar performance to yesterday, only with us taking our chances since its a cup game. Hope Rashford is nowhere near this, he needs like a month off to get his shit together I think.

    Rashford needs to be used as a sub IMO, and I doubt Jose will waist a Carrick game on this competition, I think we'll see this;

Not sure, if that is my prediction or what I'm hoping for. Somehow I can't see Schneiderlin getting a start.

Our level at the moment, so we go to win it really. Think Memphis and Young should be given a chance in the wide areas with everyone else performing so averagely there but other than that I'd keep it strong. I think Bilic might rest a few with Arsenal coming up Saturday too.

3-0 with a strong team and the same side to suffer at Everton on Sunday!

Let the front three play together, get them to know each other and hopefully they can become our starting front three sooner or later.

    Midfield players need the game.

Completely disagree. Regardless of what people may think about the competition, I can't see how a defeat is going to do the team any good?? We really need to go on a winning streak and start building confidence within the team. It's not good for a club like United to be dropping out of all competitions before we've even got going. This indifference to other competitions is quite baffling tbh. I really don't get it. Only one team out of 20 can win the league title every year and it ain't going to be us and last time I checked you don't win anything by coming 4th.

    West Ham again? Blimey.

Put a strong team out, this is probably our only chance of a trophy this season.

The midweek games and fixture congestion are killing us. There is not much reward for winning the EFL as say, the Europa League. I'd rather we concentrated playing our best players and efforts elsewhere rather than risk unnecessary injuries to key players. I'm not really bothered, we failed to pick up the three points in the fixture that actually mattered on Sunday. I don't think our morale will take that much more of a hit even if we lose. This should just be an opportunity to play our second team, a win would be a bonus (in my humble opinion). Having said that I think we'll win comfortably this time.

That draw means we have to prioritize this competition and the Europa League IMO. At this point, if I were to be offered finishing 5th but winning the League Cup and Europa League, I'd jump at it. Making up what's realistically 9+ points is looking like a mammoth task even this early in the season.

No Carrick is likely and Pogba is suspended, as is Fellaini. However, all three of these could be blessings in disguise provided we actually win this tie. Carrick and Pogba rested for Everton away, with Fellaini not being able to play here kind of forces José's hand. It has to be Herrera and Schneiderlin/Schweinsteiger. Shaw, Rooney, and Mkhitaryan all need to come back in.

    de Gea
    Valencia Jones Blind Shaw
    Herrera Schneiderlin
    Mata Mkhitaryan Rooney
    Ibrahimovic
    ---
Romero; Rojo; Schweinsteiger, Young, Memphis; Martial, Rashford

I'd like to see the diamond for a change

    Herrera
    Pogba BFS
    Schneid

    or

    Mata
    Pogba BFS
    TFM

Two out of Rooney, Martial and Rashers as the front two, back four sorts itself

    Bless us, Jose

West Ham have become a bit of a bogey team since Bilic came in.

PL: Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
FA: Man Utd 1-1 West Ham
FA Replay: West Ham 1-2 Man Utd
PL: West Ham 3-2 Man Utd
PL: Man Utd 1-1 West Ham

Let's put away our fecking chances this time.

The childish side of me doesn't want us to score any goals because I'll be pissed off we couldn't have got them yesterday.

Then I'll wise the hell up and be happy we've scored (if we score that is :nervous:)

We can't stop here. This is bat country.
Can we establish a narrow lead and then start conducting the most embarrassing time-wasting antics.

Judging by the weekend this will lead to no more than 4 minutes of injury time and we can just spend most of that making a sub and taking a goal kick.

Have a feeling this might be worse than sunday. 0-2 with Payet and Antonio scoring and many a lot would be wanting Jose's blood. Hope I'm wrong.
    Losing at Old Trafford? Hmmmm..........

Being a speedway fan, as well as a footy fan, I like the photo of a 1930's West Ham speedway team on the opening post. The West Ham promoter was the legendary Johnnie Hoskins, the man widely credited with inventing the sport of speedway in the 1920's in Australia. Johnnie is in the middle of the pic, with his son Ian, who later became a promoter at Edinburgh, the club's mascot. I met Johnnie once in 1977, when he was promoter at Canterbury. A real character and a true legend of sport.
